It’s Music Monday!
Happy Monday, everyone! After last week’s foray into more commercial pop, I’m in the mood for one of the greatest opening riffs in history, like, ever. (Yes, ever, ever, Miss Swift!) I salute, you, Axl!
Memories? Well, for me this song evokes memories of road trips. You know, driving to England and back. (Not me personally, obviously, as most of you know that I don’t drive. But being driven, then, to be precise). Listening to a rock compilation tape (yes, tape, in those days!). Sunrises on the road. Endless tarmac. Service station breakfasts. This may sound strange, but these are actually good memories of an exciting time of change and forward move in my life.

Oh wow! I’ve just had to stop blogging for a few minutes and totally rock out around my living room. Start Monday with a blast, LOVE IT!
As for memories? Way too many to mention, but a stand out moment was a drive home from Reading festival with my partner about 10 years ago. It was a blazing hot day and we were stuck in a huge traffic jam crawling slowly out of Reading, but spirits were high (the festival had been awesome) and this song came on the radio. It seemed everyone in the traffic jam had tuned to the same station, because all around heads were nodding, hands were tapping on the sides of cars, and the not so sweet sound of a multitude of wannabe Axl Roses sang along with gusto 🙂

Amazing lyrics Nicky, I absolutely love this song and was a great fan of Guns ‘N Roses back in the late eighties/early nineties when they were big. Every time I hear this I’m reminded of a day in the office when someone came in with tickets to see Axl Rose and Co in London – everyone was so envious!
I bet they were, I’d have been green! (In fact, I am, even years after the fact). Wish I could’ve seen them live, just once! Great lyrics, too, especially as they could’ve been written for me, what with the blue eyes and all… *preens, then laughs at self* Thanks for stopping by, Jo! Xx
Enjoyed this no end…what a rocking start to the week. I am still getting to grips with the new computer, Windows 8 and the fact all my passwords for everything have been driving me nuts; having to change them several times each – each time I log into anything a new request to change them! So will be back gradually reading all your blogs and replying to emails. Since the jab in my shoulder I have been in agony, not the idea I think, so back to typing agony and stiffness, but your blog and the track cheered me up no end Nicky, thanks. 🙂

Well, my wonderful lady, you could hardly have picked a better song for me to start my week to! You know how I feel about Slash! He’s one of the greatest guitar players of our time. He wrote this famous riff.
Now I have to say here, I’ve heard this live a few times and my lovely Myles Kennedy makes an awesome job of singing it. Love the original with Axl, but to hear it now, go see Slash, Myles & Co!
Right, I’ll stop fangirling. Memories from this song? Being a young rock chick in the eighties when the original came out; starting Uni, being able to wear heels all night, looking good in lace tights. Most recent memory: being front row in Blackpool on Slash’s last tour, and getting him to sign my CD inlay! I’m fangirling again… 😉

I’ll be brief this week. This week you asked us, what memories does your song evoke for us? Well for this follower, none. I never got into Guns & Roses or any of their songs.
The first memory evoking song which comes to my mind is “Those Were the Days,” however I believe I’ve used this song before. After thinking about a song response for this week, I got it. It’s a song which I feel will evoke memories in your life especially as it relates to your OH…It does with mine. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I will always love Guns N Roses. This song brings back the memory of the first time I saw them in concert. They opened for Alice Cooper. I had already fallen in love with this band, but the guy who took me wanted to see Alice Cooper instead (not that I didn’t want to see him too). He made fun of Axl’s signature movements on stage. He said it looked like Michael Jackson and a bunch of Hell’s Angels. I said you just watch. They will be huge one day. I guess he ate those words. 🙂

I must admit that Sweet Child o’ Mine actually reminds me of . . . G’n’R’s November Rain! I think I know why – I used to tape (yes, that word again) music videos off VH-1 and MTV (that was before I started writing, obviously, ‘cos there’s no time for that now!) There was probably a G’n’R segment and one track followed the other . . .
And yes, I still have all the videos. (All the *tapes*!)
And no, we don’t have a VCR connected to the TV anymore . . . 😮

Finally had a chance to listen to this song again [2x]. The song is definitely one which does provoke memories. However, it’s probably due to my age [I’m already collecting Social Security here in The States] I prefer to listen to music where the song is sung, I felt as if she was yelling out the lyrics instead of singing them, which might be due to the LOUD music being used.
Double checking the actual lyrics, I feel the song’s ending which is looking towards the future could be used to describe your next 20+ years in the UK.

Do you know, I’m usually with you on that score but you simply cannot fault Axl for singing the way he does. It’s an art form in and as of itself, LOL! I can see that it might take some getting used to, though… XX
