Introducing: Anneli Purchase

Anneli Purchase

The losers in a war are always deemed to have been wrong, evil aggressors, not worthy of a sympathetic ear. My mother was on the losing side during WWII. She told me many stories of her life in Saaz, now a part of the Czech Republic. She lost her home, her husband, and her way of life in the aftermath of war. Hearing the stories as a child, I didn’t realize the enormity of the losses she suffered nor how widespread the atrocities were. Much later it became clear to me that these injustices were experienced by thousands of others like her, many of whom were not so fortunate, losing not only their homes, but also their families and their own lives. I wanted to tell a story that could easily have happened to any of my mother’s fellow Sudetenlanders, a story of love, courage, and survival under the direst of circumstances.

When people of differing cultures are at war, they are capable of committing the most inhumane atrocities. This story does not attempt to take sides, to say that one was more vicious than the other. While there are many stories telling of the misdeeds of the German government and of Germans in general, this tells the story from the other side. I have tried to write it without prejudice.

When the war ended, I thought things would get better I was wrong. The worst was yet to come. The Czechs took our homes away and expelled us from our homeland. We survived those terrible years after the war, one day at a time.

Now, twenty years later—a letter from Michael. He wants me to come to Canada. Ah, Michael, my love. It’s too late. I’m married again. Too late… isn’t it?

The Wind Weeps… with Anneli Purchase

CentreStage with Anneli Purchase!

Welcome to CentreStage! I’m absolutely delighted to turn the floor over to my fabulous Canadian friend Anneli Purchase. For those of you who might not know her, Anneli is the author of three moving and captivating novels. When she’s not writing, she’s often busy taking photos and sharing them via her blog in wonderfully inspiring posts. She’s also a tremendous supporter of fellow authors and great fun to hang out with on the social networks. While she lives in Canada, she had a German mother, and we quite often compare memories of German-inspired childhood traditions concerning Easter, Christmas and other assorted holidays.  Today, she’s come to showcase her debut novel, The Wind Weeps. Take it away, Anneli!

The Wind Weeps

The setting for my novel The Wind Weeps is the west coast of British Columbia. The situation that develops in this story is fiction and a bit bizarre, but it is one that, with variations, has actually taken place more than once on this coast. If you want adventure and suspense, along with a good love story, maybe this is the book for you.

Why did I choose this title?

Have you ever heard high winds roaring through the trees in a windstorm? On the coast of British Columbia what isn’t rock is trees. When the southeast winds scream across the water and then, making landfall, get hung up in the tall firs and cedars, the whooshing of the wind alternates between howling and whining. Unsettling sounds, even when you have your life in order, but when you wish you were elsewhere and have absolutely no escape, the wind almost begs you to join it in its weeping.

My Main Characters

Andrea is a happy young woman who leaves her boring city job back east and comes out west for a life of adventure. She is determined to learn to get by on her own in a world that is much more raw than the sheltered city life she left behind.

She is a head-turner. Men are attracted to her good looks, but she is apparently oblivious to the effect she has on them.

Jim ~ Every woman’s Mr. Right, he is handsome, humble, capable, fun to be with, and sexy without trying to be.

Robert ~ Strong, tall, handsome, with a magnetic personality…and secrets he keeps hidden.

The Story

When she finds a job on the wharf in a small west coast town, she has her choice of men, but naively, she gets caught up in too much of a good thing. There’s a song by Glenn Frey that was made just for her.

“Are you gonna stay with the one who loves you
Or are you goin’ back to the one you love?
Someone’s gonna cry when they know they’ve lost you
Someone’s gonna thank the stars above”

Poor Andrea makes the wrong choice and pays the price. When she ends up in a desperate situation, she often hears the wind and wants to weep with it.

But wait, she’s made of stronger stuff than that. She is determined to find a way out. As we follow Andrea in her dilemma, we travel the coast and experience it as if we were in the boat with her, in the forest with her, in the remote towns with her, in a life of hell with her, hanging onto a sliver of hope.

CentreStage with Anneli Purchase

Welcome to the third edition of CentreStageCentreStage is a new feature on my blog that will showcase fantastic authors from across the world, introducing in particular my fellow authors in the Sapphire Star Publishing family, as well as fellow featured authors at loveahappyending.com.  In this new, exciting feature, these authors might write for you about their lives, or their writing journey, or anything else that matters to them.  Every feature will be different in format and flavour, so watch out for a variety of stories and tales.

Today, it is my tremendous pleasure to welcome lovehappyending.com featured author Anneli Purchase to this edition of CentreStage!

Anneli writes about the inspiration for her novel:

For the last thirty-three years, my husband has been a commercial fisherman. Having a troller gave us opportunities to see British Columbia’s beautiful coast in a way most people never can. When it wasn’t fishing time, we often used the boat to do camping trips. In and out of inlets and bays along the coast and among the islands, we had floating holidays.

Over the years we met many fascinating and unique personalities among the fishermen and other boaters. I wanted to use some of these rich experiences as a basis for a novel. None of the characters in my novel are real, but some of them are composites of people I’ve met, with a huge dose of imagination added.

I needed a naive woman to be my protagonist. Andrea fit the bill perfectly. In my book, The Wind Weeps, Andrea comes to B.C. to find adventure and love. She finds more than enough of both. From Comox on Vancouver Island, to Lund across the water on the B.C. mainland, and then up the coast to Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands, Andrea gains a first-hand, in-depth look into the life of a commercial fisherman, all the while dealing with her personal relationships with the two handsome men in her life.

And then there’s the French-Canadian woman, who loves Andrea from the day they first meet. What’s to be done about Monique?

Andrea eventually finds herself in a situation where she fears for her life. She is no longer the naive girl from Ontario, but we wonder if her recently acquired survival skills will be enough to save her life? Read The Wind Weeps and find out.

Available now at amazon.com as a paperback and Kindle e-book and at Barnes and Noble for paperback and Nook. For all e-book formats, visit Smashwords.com.
