Wake up to the new Chick Lit: Complex characters, plot twists and darker, deeper themes…

I’m proud to call myself a chick lit author, and I feel honored to fly the chick lit flag. What’s more, I have no problem with the term “chick lit”. It’s cute, it’s catchy and it’s fun. Much like the books are. Okay, so deep down I have a slight problem with the term. As Bethanne Patrick pointed out in an article on The Huffington Post, “it’s an infantilization.” This is true. But one must choose one’s battles and I feel this is something I can live with. If I took offense at the term “chick lit” I’d have to object any time my peers (women in their thirties) mention “getting together with the girls”.

What I do have a problem with is people’s misconceptions about the genre – and I’m referring not only the general public here, but to agents and editors as well. For years before I was published, I spent a great deal of time on writers’ websites and can’t count the number of times I read a post warning aspiring authors not to use the term when approaching agents or editors. “The kiss of death” it was called. “Call it contemporary women’s fiction instead,” people advised.

In one case I know of, an editor was hell-bent on eliminating all chick lit elements in a manuscript and replacing them with standard romantic elements. When the author said it was her intention was to brand herself as an author of chick lit/romance hybrids, the editor responded by saying, “Chick lit is a derogatory term… (It’s not) as well written as women’s fiction. So I’m not sure why you think following a chick lit formula is good writing, unless all you want to do with your career – if you plan to have one – is copy other authors who are already marginalized.”

Marginalized? Really? Jennifer Weiner has over 11 million copies of her books in print in 36 countries. Sophie Kinsella passed the 5 million sales mark back in 2010 and currently has just under 415,000 “likers” on Facebook, including me. It seems clear that there is a substantial audience out there for stories about fun, modern young women, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why the publishing industry is so reluctant to capitalize off of it.

I fully believe the already considerable audience could be much wider if it weren’t for the public’s misconceptions. I recently spent a couple of hours on Goodreads, going through reviews of books in the chick lit genre, and I came across several reviews that included statements such as: “For a chick lit novel, this was surprisingly intelligent” or “I can’t believe this is really a chick lit novel because it actually has a cohesive plot.” It seems to me that most people still think chick lit is all about cocktails and stilettos, when it’s long since evolved to include complex characters, plot twists and darker, deeper themes. And the characters are rarely obsessed with material goods these days. Well… except for Becky Bloomwood, everyone’s favorite Shopaholic.

Another thing that irks me to no end is the tendency to lump every book written by a woman (apart from obvious literary works by authors such as Margaret Atwood) into the chick lit genre. I’ve recently read articles by reputable book reviewers who have cited both The Help and Fifty Shades of Grey as being examples of chick lit books. Are you kidding me? And I cannot begin to understand why no one apart from me seems to have a problem with Marian Keyes being classified as a chick lit author. Her books are deeply moving, intense, dark and haunting. I read chick lit to fulfil my need for light-hearted escapism. I read Ms. Keyes’s novels to go on an emotional roller coaster ride, fully prepared to stay up all night to finish them and feel raw afterwards. And she writes chick lit? Really?

I hate to say it, but I think all these issues surrounding the chick lit genre come down to good old-fashioned sexism. Why else would Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series not be shelved in the same section of the bookstore as John Grisham’s novels?

Sarah Sentilles wrote a fascinating article for Harvard’s Divinity School newsletter in which she states, “Genres are gendered, a practice fuelled by the perception that women’s writing is essentially different than men’s. It seems, for example, to be common practice to call memoirs about religion by women “spiritual memoirs” and memoirs about religion by men “books about religion” or “searches for meaning”.

Jennifer Weiner – who is totally our genre’s Che Guevara – put it well when she said, “I think it’s a very old and deep-seated double standard that holds that when a man writes about family and feelings, it’s literature with a capital L, but when a woman considers the same topics, it’s romance, or a beach book – in short, it’s something unworthy of a serious critic’s attention.”

And speaking of the critics…

Feminist, author and journalist, Lakshmi Chaudhry, wrote, “Unlike the gods of the literary establishment who remain predominantly male – both as writers and critics – their humble readers are overwhelmingly female.”  Overwhelmingly is right. According to surveys conducted in the US, Canada and Britain, women account for a whopping 80% of the fiction market. Isn’t that amazing?

In a perfect world, books in the same genre by both male and female authors would be shelved together. You’d be able to find both John Grisham and Janet Evanovich in mystery/thrillers. Sophie Kinsella would be shelved in the comedic section along with P. G. Woodhouse. And Marian Keyes would sit just down the aisle from Yann Martel in the literary section.

Failing that, we could always work on popularizing the term “dick lit”. Calling these books “lad lit” is weak. Let’s work on phasing it out. Like “chick lit”, the term “dick lit” is cute, it’s catchy and it’s fun. And it’s also a little naughty – more fun! It’s not as if there aren’t any books and authors out there who would fit beautifully into this category. To help you understand what I’m envisioning, I have to share this quote I found written by review blogger, Jodi Chromey. She says, “Dick lit [is] like chick lit but with rock & roll instead of shoes.”

Nick Hornby is the obviously the quintessential dick lit author, but also Mike Gayle and Joshua Braff have written several books that would fit perfectly into the genre. Dominic Knight’s Disco Boy would be another candidate for ultimate dick lit reads, as would Rudolph Delson’s Maynard and Jennica. All of these books deal with issues that the modern man faces in his career, family, friendship and love relationships, often told in a comedic or light-hearted voice. Sound familiar?

It may be unrealistic to expect women to have more of an influence on how the publishing industry is run (although it shouldn’t be. Hello? 80%) but we can start by using the term “dick lit” whenever and wherever it applies. After all, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

10 Things People Would Be Surprised To Know About Me

1.) I love romantic comedies. Love, love, love them! I know they are silly and unrealistic and not characteristic of real relationships but they make me all happy. I can’t get enough.

2.) I also love revenge movies like Man On Fire, Italian Job and Count of Monte Cristo.

3.) I once boxed a girl in a bar for money. I won $50.00.

4.) I studied martial arts for 10 years and used to teach children. It was awesome.

5.) My favorite class in my graduate program (which was in Curriculum & Instruction) was School Law.

6.) I have all 10 seasons of the show Friends and whenever I am feeling bummed out, I watch some of them. I don’t know why but that show cheers me up. My favorite seasons are 5 and 8.

7.) My feet are always freezing. I frequently steal my husband’s giant man-socks and wear them over top of my own socks.

8.) I don’t eat lettuce. It doesn’t agree with my stomach. So in salads I substitute fresh spinach.

9.) My favorite book as a child was Sesame Street Grover’s The Monster At The End of This Book—it scared the crap out of me every time and yet I wanted to read it again and again!

10.) I hate cooking but I love to bake.

Well, wow, Lisa ~ what can I say! Loveya, is what springs to mind. Am with you on the romcoms, obviously, love them. Can’t believe you won $50 boxing a girl in a bar, how did that come about?? Am neither here or there about the lettuce and would adore some instruction from you in martial arts. GREAT post, thank you. Now let’s meet your book!

Finding Claire Fletcher

Newly divorced and with his career in jeopardy, Detective Connor Parks takes solace in the arms of a beautiful woman he meets at a bar. The next morning, Claire Fletcher is gone, leaving nothing behind but an address and a decade-old mystery. The address leads to the Fletcher family home where Claire’s siblings inform Connor that their fifteen-year-old sister was abducted from a city street ten years ago and is presumed dead.

During those ten years, Claire endured the cruel torture and depravity of the man who abducted her. Paralyzed by fear and too ashamed to return to her family, Claire is resigned to her life as Lynn, the identity her abductor forced upon her. Every time she attempts escape or betrays him in the smallest way, someone dies. Even now, her clandestine run-in with Connor Parks may have put his life at risk, as well as the lives of her family.

Connor is convinced that not only is Claire Fletcher alive, but that she is also the woman he met at the bar. Driven to see her again, he begins his own investigation, off the clock and without the police department’s consent. He is determined to find her and unravel the mystery of her abduction and odd reemergence. But finding Claire Fletcher proves more dangerous than he anticipates. In fact, it may be deadly.

CentreStage with Susan Buchanan ~ Even professionals seek professional help in The Dating Game

Welcome to CentreStage!

CentreStage showcases fantastic authors from around the world. These authors might share with you stories about their books, their lives, their writing or anything else that takes their fancy. We’ve had picture posts and music posts, interviews, guest posts and all manner of exciting things. So grab a cuppa and a slice of cake as I welcome the fabulous Susan Buchanan!

Susan has just launched her second novel, The Dating Game, and she is chatting with her main character, Gill McFadden, about… well, the dating game. Take it away, ladies!

Taking the plunge… going dating the professional way!

S: *makes sweeping hand gesture to introduce her guest* Today we meet Gill from The Dating Game. She has just taken the plunge and joined a dating agency for professional people.

S: Hi Gill, and thanks for joining us

G: Pleasure

S: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I believe you work in Recruitment?

G: That’s right. I have my own agency, in Glasgow, which specialises in Engineering and Sales and Marketing roles.  I set it up about 3 years ago.

S: That sounds exciting, but I’ve heard it’s a very cut-throat industry. How are you coping with the recession?

G: It is a very difficult industry to be in and now more than ever with 40 candidates chasing every opportunity. It’s very disheartening when you see good candidates fail to get employment.  But on the flip side it’s very rewarding when I place a good candidate in the right role.  It is, however, the bane of my social life. I set up the agency just as the recession started and the job situation, as you know, has only got worse and worse. That means I have to work more and more hours to make a success of things.

S: I imagine that must be difficult when you’re in a relationship, or trying to find a partner.

G: *sighs deeply* Yes, that’s about the long and short of it. Most guys can’t live with the hours I’m putting in. They want all my attention focussed on them and quite frankly, that’s when you meet a good one.  I thought New York was the city where it was meant to be difficult for single women, but Glasgow must come a close second. Plus, the very idea of having time to try and meet someone is just laughable. By the time I’ve finished work (I am here from 7am to 9pm most days) all I want is a hot shower, dinner and bed. Although it would be nice if there was someone to share the bed with.

S: That doesn’t sound a very satisfying an existence…

G:  *gives an ironic laugh* You’re telling me! In more ways than one, I can tell you! The problem is because I don’t have time to go and meet guys in the normal way; pubs, night classes, rambling clubs, even work colleagues (although I don’t recommend that) the only dates I’ve been on in the last few years are blind dates set up by my friends, Lisa, Angela and Debbie.

S: Oh right, so how have those worked out for you, and what did you think of the whole blind date experience?

G: Well, I think the fact that I’ve just joined a dating agency speaks for itself. But generally they consisted of men who spoke about themselves all night, didn’t ask anything about me; were more interested in their appearance than anything else and bitched about their past relationships/wives. And those are the ones I’m not too embarrassed to tell you about!

S: Okay. So, did you ever think ‘stuff this, I’m better off just being single’?

G: Sure, loads of times. And for the most part I do like being single. I don’t need a man in my life.  I make good money, have a nice flat, lovely car (Audi)  great friends and am very close to my brother and his family.  But sometimes, just sometimes, I wouldn’t mind having someone that I could tell about my day when I come in from work, that I could laugh at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival with or who would go to a classical music concert with me. Plus, there’s the physical side of things…

S: So would you say it was the ‘physical side of things’ that led you to join Happy Ever After?

G: No, although if I meet the right person, I’m not ruling that out, at all! It’s been so long since… I mean, it would be great just to be shown some male affection.  I do miss that. But I’ve thought long and hard about it, and I want a relationship.  I don’t necessarily want kids and marriage and all that, but I do want to be with someone that enhances my life.

S: So, tell us about the dating agency? How does it work?  Is it expensive?

G: *looks a fraction uncomfortable*  Well, I saw the ad on a bus. It’s really expensive actually. £400 joining fee.

S: Four hundred pounds?

G: Yes, and that was a half-price offer. Then it’s £40 a month direct debit.  They say you should expect 20-35 introductions in a year for that.

S: I should think so, at that price!  That will certainly weed out the time wasters.  I must ask, did you tell the complete truth on your dating profile?

G:  *hesitates* Well, mostly.  Everyone likes to present the best side of themselves, don’t they?  I didn’t put I spoke fluent French or anything, but I may have exaggerated a few things. Doesn’t everyone?

S: Hmm, interesting. So, what’s the state of play now?

G: I’ve received three profiles. Two look great, the other, I’m not so sure. I’m meeting my friend Debbie later to go over them.

S: Well, Gill, I wish you the best of luck. Three sounds quite promising. Hopefully you will find your ideal date in that lot.

G: Yes, well, I’m going to reserve judgment until I decide whether to meet them or not, although one in particular I have to say, is definitely my type.  Fingers crossed, but I don’t want to get my hopes up just yet.

S: Will you come back and tell us how you got on?

G: Of course. I just hope it’s good news.

S: I’m sure it will be. Good luck and thanks for agreeing to this interview

G: You’re welcome and I think I’m going to need that luck!

Nicky says: Wow, good luck, Gill, and I look forward to reading about your dating experiences!! 🙂

About Susan Buchanan and The Dating Game

Susan Buchanan lives in Central Scotland with her partner, Tony. The Dating Game is her second novel, released 2nd Nov 2012. Sign of the Times, her first novel, was published in Mar 2012. She will shortly start work on her third novel, due for release Spring 2013.

Here exclusively is Susan Buchanan talking about The Dating Game:

The idea for The Dating Game came from a friend who had joined a dating agency for professional people in Glasgow. Although none of the escapades or experiences Gill has in The Dating Game are those my friend had, the seed was sown! How does a busy, career-oriented woman in her late thirties, find a guy, and not only a guy, but the right guy? I wanted the relationships she had had and the dates she would have, to be as realistic as possible. As I love travelling, I always incorporate at least one foreign country into my books. You’ll have to read The Dating Game to find out where it is!

When I read, I love to read books about foreign parts that I have visited – it immerses me more in the story. I wanted to do the same in my own novels. I love reading, always have – romantic fiction, crime, contemporary drama, pretty much everything.

Visit Susan on Twitter @susan_buchanan or on Facebook, or check out her blog. The Dating Game is available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com; Sign of the Times is also available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com. Happy reading!

Susan has a fantastic launch give-away going on her blog; you could win one of 54 Kindle books by 54 different authors (including yours truly! 🙂 ) so it’s well worth checking out. Visit Susan’s launch party  for details!

Now then. Dating. How did you find your perfect match? Or if you’re looking where are you looking?

And just to take the awkwardness away, I’ll go first. I met my other half singing in the choir ~ go figure!

Hall of Fame party with A.L. Jackson ~ When We Collide

Roll out the red carpet!
Open the champagne!
It’s time to enter the Hall of Fame!

Whoop! It’s launch day over at Sapphire Star Publishing, and today we are celebrating the launch of When We Collide by A.L. Jackson!

A.L. has popped over all the way from across the pond to share with us some her writing essentials and introduce When We Collide! Give it up for… A.L. Jackson!

Thank you so much to my Sapphire Star Sister, Nicky Wells, for inviting me to be a part of her blog today in celebration of the release of When We Collide! I’m very excited to be here today.

When We Collide took me almost exactly one year to write. . .to the date.  A year is a long time to put into a project, and when I spend so much time working on something, there are a few things that really help me to get that job done.

So here they are ~ My must haves for writing!

First and foremost, I need my laptop! I have a docking station since most of my writing is done in my office, but I love that I can pop my laptop off and take it with me wherever I want to go. You can find me writing in bed, on the couch, and sometimes working while I watch my boys at the skate park.

A notebook is a must for me when I’m writing. Even though my books are written on the computer, most of my thoughts and ideas start here.  I find handwriting really helps to get my creative side stimulated and working.  I have notebook after notebook of scribbled words and lines that don’t make a whole lot of sense, but that’s okay, because I really can’t read my handwriting anyway.

Don’t forget the music.  Sometimes I just close my eyes and sit back and listen to the music and lyrics while I watch my characters in my mind’s eye.

Tablet! I keep my tablet close by my side when I’m writing.  I’m a firm believer in reading being one of the key elements in an author’s writing life.  If I’m feeling stuck, I go directly to my Kindle reader and. . .read.  It usually only takes a half an hour or so for those words to break up the monotony in my mind and get me in the writing mood.

Okay, so maybe this one isn’t a must, but who doesn’t love a bunch of colorful pens to brighten up the office? I do!

Coffee! I believe this one is self-explanatory.

Diet Coke.  Yeah.

And Monster. Anyone else sensing a trend here?

So what are your writing must haves?

Happy writing!

Thank you so much for this fabulous post, A.L.! I’m with you on the laptop, music, coffee (well, tea in my case) and Diet Coke. I might add chocolate and a blanket to my ‘must haves’. 🙂 Now tell us about When We Collide

When We Collide

William has spent six years running from his past and the last eight months trying to rid his mind of the dreams that increasingly haunt his nights. Trapped in a world of false ambitions and feigned affections, William knows he’s reached a breaking point and something’s going to give.

Maggie had lived her entire life without hope until one man showed her what it meant to be loved. He’d been her light in a lifetime of darkness. Six years ago, that darkness stole him away. Without him, she’s surrendered herself to an existence she doesn’t know how to escape.

When the family William left behind is struck by tragedy, he is called back to the one place he’s sworn to never return to again. In a moment that will change his life forever, William comes face to face with the girl who, with one look, captured his heart. He is unable to ignore the buried desires and the hope for the future they’d once believed they’d have.

Now William is ready to fight to take back what had been stolen from him six years before.

But he never imagined what that fight might cost him.

A.L. Jackson gives you an intimate look into the lives of a family bound by an unseen connection in this romantic thriller with a supernatural twist.

Wow! I am hooked! I’ve got When We Collide on my Kindle and you can get it here: Amazon.com Paperback; Amazon.com Kindle; Amazon.co.uk Kindle. A.L.’s book will also be available from Barnes & Noble, Smashwords and other e-book providers.

About A.L. Jackson

A.L. Jackson first found a love for writing during her days as a young mother and college student.  She filled the journals she carried with short stories and poems used as an emotional outlet for the difficulties and joys she found in day-to-day life.

Years later, she shared a short story she had been working on with her two closest friends and, with their encouragement, this story became her first full length novel. A.L. now spends her days writing in Southern Arizona where she lives with her husband and three beautiful children. Her favorite pastime is spending time with the ones she loves.

Find out more about A.L. Jackson at her author page at Sapphire Star Publishing or on her blog.  You can also follow A.L. on  Twitter or find her on Facebook and Goodreads.

Happy Book Birthday, A.L. and I hope the launch goes terrifically well… Rock on! 🙂

How do you #Voodoo? The Spellbindingly Fun Blog Party with @JaniceHorton

It’s Janice Horton’s Spellbindingly Fun Blog Party!

Congratulations to Janice as she celebrates the launch of her Halloween novella, How Do You Vodoo!

Loveless fashion model Nola Nichols thinks being beautiful is a curse; that is
until she is cursed and her looks begin to fade just a week before the most
important photo shoot of her career.

Nola rejects all rational explanation on what might be causing her lost looks and decides she has to find a way to get uncursed. This imaginative quest takes her from the Caribbean to Glasgow’s own City of the Dead. Along the way, she finds herself taking part in a rather unconventional funeral, involved in a voodoo ritual, reveals one or two unrests in her own past and falls madly in love with a doctor. Erm, that would be a witch doctor, right…?

How Do You Vodoo is out now ~ and it’s FREE today (26 October), what are you waiting for?

To honour the occasion, I’m taking part in the Spellbindingly Fun Blog Party so here goes…

Nicky’s Rocking-Ever-After Spell

Banish the worry, dry the tears, do away with your deepest fears
Welcome the love, the light, and the precious one
I’ve touched the stone and I will rock on

To banish the worry, dry the tears, do away with your deepest fears
~
Collect one worry stone on a new moon at midnight and put in the freezer until the next full moon
~Climb the highest Scottish mountain to collect thirteen dragon tears; put in the freezer next to the worry stone until the next full moon
~Write a list of your deepest fears and add them to the worry stone and dragon tears in the freezer (remember to use waterproof ink!)

To welcome the light, the love, the precious one
~Gather stardust and summon Northern lights on the next night of the next full moon
~Pick a single white rose by the light of the next full moon
~Collect a moonstone by the light of the next full moon

BY THE LIGHT OF THE NEXT FULL MOON…

Remove the worry stone and dragon tears and list of your deepest fears from the freezer. Crush with the biggest hammer you can find while reciting the first line of the spell, and place resulting worry, tear and fear dust in cauldron.

Sprinkle the worry, tear and fear dust liberally with Northern lights and stardust. Stir well using the single white rose while reciting the second line of the spell.

Touch the moonstone and throw it high in the air, aiming to land in cauldron. Aim carefully. If you miss, your spell is void.

After (and only after) the moonstone has landed safely in the cauldron, recite the third and final line of the spell. You are now allowed to turn up the music. Congratulations: you will rock ever after!

Hall of Fame launch party with Nancy S. Thompson: Celebrating The Mistaken

Roll out the red carpet!
Open the champagne!
It’s time to enter the Hall of Fame!

Huge congratulations to my Sapphire Star Publishing sister and hugely talented author, Nancy S. Thompson, as she celebrates her first book birthday with the launch of The Mistaken!

Can I just say upfront that I absolutely adore the title of Nancy’s novel. It is so clever and intriguing, and perfectly perfect, and I’ve adored it ever since it was announced. Awesome!

Introducing: The Mistaken

Tyler Karras is an honest man, a transplanted Brit living the American dream, but his charmed life takes an unexpected turn when his brother, Nick, is coerced into joining ranks with San Francisco’s Russian mafia. Ty intervenes to secure Nick’s freedom, yet only succeeds in incurring their wrath. With no choice but to accept Nick’s new life, Ty returns to his own, but his dreams are dashed when his wife—pregnant with their first child—is killed, the victim of a reckless crime.

Despondent and bitter, Ty macerates his grief in alcohol. From the depths of the bottle screams a voice, howling for vengeance. His target is a stranger, the woman who drew his wife toward her death. He doesn’t know her, but he’ll find her, and when he does, he will make her pay, for a deal has been struck with Nick’s Russian associates, enslaving her into a life of sexual bondage. But as Ty moves forward in a cloud of alcohol, he mistakes the wrong woman for his intended victim, and now all his plans have gone straight to hell.

With his eyes made clear by the stark reality of his mistake, Ty is driven, compelled by remorse and a relentless sense of guilt to make amends and protect Hannah Maguire, the innocent woman whose life he has derailed. He vows to keep her safe and out of the Russians’ hands, but they’re holding Nick as leverage to force Ty to complete their deal. Once again, he must fight to free his brother, miring all three lives in further jeopardy. But Ty can’t do it all: save the girl, his brother and his own soul. One of them must make the ultimate sacrifice.

Nicky says: I am hooked. Tell me more…

Sit back and enjoy: Excerpt of The Mistaken!

Tyler dropped my hand and turned away from me, sitting straight along the edge of the sofa. With his elbows resting on his knees and his fingers steepled between his nose and upper lip, he struggled to find the right words. Unable to sit still, he stood and paced the floor.

“Hannah, I’ve explained that you—by proxy, of course—have a price on your head, that you’d been sold already. I’ve been trying to get you out of this deal, but these people Nick and I are mixed up with are reluctant to renegotiate. They’ve already received payment from their client and are just waiting for me to deliver you to them. I’ve explained to Nick’s boss, Alexi, that I’d made a mistake, that I had misidentified you, that I had the wrong girl.”

Ty shook his head and kept his eyes pinned to the floor.

“From the beginning, Alexi knew I was intending retribution against Erin, and since he would directly benefit from it, he was only too willing to accommodate me, but essentially, he doesn’t care about the reasoning behind the plan. All he cares about is that I owe him his, uh…merchandise. Merchandise he’s already sold and been paid for. He only cares about closing the deal. I told him I would repay the price his boss, Dmitri, had accepted, with interest, and he could refund the money to his client. But he’s not willing to do that. Nick said it’s not about the money for Dmitri, it’s about power. They can’t allow themselves to be screwed with, to look weak.”

He stopped pacing, stuffed his hands in his pockets, and stared out the window.

“I told Alexi I would never turn you over—an innocent girl—to be used that way. At this point, I couldn’t even do that to Erin.”

Tyler’s focus wavered and he choked up. He looked down at his feet and continued, his brow knitted tightly together.

“We argued over this point for some time without coming to an agreement, so Alexi felt…  He felt it…necessary to secure some kind of…insurance policy—leverage, you might say—to compel me to complete the deal by our prearranged deadline.”

Tyler dropped his hands to his sides and tightened them into fists. He glanced over his shoulder and looked me in the eye.

“Hannah, Alexi has my brother, and he will kill him if I don’t comply.”

Last but not least ~ Praise for The Mistaken and a fabulous trailer

“A deliciously slow burn that builds to a ferocious crescendo, Nancy S. Thompson’s THE MISTAKEN kept me riveted until the very last page. Tyler Karras is a complex and flawed protagonist, and his redemptive journey makes him the perfect anti-hero. This psychological suspense is a standout, and I can’t wait for Thompson’s next book.” ~ Jennifer Hillier, author of CREEP and FREAK

“Nancy S. Thompson’s debut novel, The Mistaken, is a first-rate thriller full of hair-raising twists and turns.  Pursued by the police and the Russian mafia in San Francisco, brothers Tyler and Nick Karras are fascinating, fully-drawn, desperate characters.  The action is non-stop.  Thompson’s taut, intriguing tale of revenge, mistaken identity, kidnapping and murder will keep you enthralled and entertained.”  ~Kevin O’Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of DISTURBED and TERRIFIED

“Fast-paced and emotionally gripping – once the ride begins, you won’t stop reading until it ends.”  ~Alex J. Cavanaugh, author of CASSAFIRE and CASSASTAR

Huge congratulations on your launch day, Nancy. Wishing you every success and a huge amount of sales!!! Rock on… 🙂

CentreStage with Stephanie Keyes: The Ultimate Star Child Playlist

Welcome to CentreStage!

CentreStage features wonderful authors from around the world. These authors might share with you stories about their lives, their books, their journeys or anything else that inspires them. Today, it is my tremendous pleasure to welcome fellow loveahappyending.com and totally-up-for-impromptu-singing-sister, Stephanie Keyes. Are you ready? Hold on to your seatbelts, here comes a rockin’ post!

The Star Child Music Playlist

As you all know, one of the great things that the lovely Nicky Wells and I have in common is our love of music. So I thought I would talk about that very thing today. I had some great music on my playlist for The Star Child, so let me walk you through some key parts of the book and share the music that influenced me.

Kellen Meets Calienta

Into the Fire by Thirteen Senses

Kellen and Calienta have known each other for almost all of Kellen’s life, but it had only been in dreams. Until Kellen meets her face-to-face and she pulls him into a world of magick and mystery in a fight to save the world and themselves. As they fall deeper in love is as if they’re walking straight into the fire.

 Kellen and Stephen

Caring Is Creepy by The Shins

Kellen goes to visit Stephen after his graduation and finds him oblivious to the fact that Kellen even graduated on that day. Kellen makes a conscious effort after that point not to care about Stephen and seeks only a measure of “closure” in visiting him.

First Kiss

You Are Mine by  MUTEMATH

Stuck in a thunderstorm of Lugh’s making, Kellen and Calienta run for cover and share their first kiss.

Kellen’s Confession

Postcards From Far Away by Coldplay

After sneaking into Faerie under the cover of night, Kellen confesses his love to Calienta.

The Trooping Faeries

Night of the Hunter by 30 Seconds To Mars

With the Hounds of the Hill after him and a troupe of Trooping Faeries not far behind, Kellen finds himself on a run through time to find Calienta and save his love. There was no better song to embody the section than the 30 Seconds to Mars hit.

Gharda

Go Do by Jonsi

As Gharda’s powerful wings carry Kellen through dimensions of the Faerie world and back to Calienta, Jonsi’s pure voice embodies flying through the clouds.

The White Stag

Sonata for Two Clarinets by Richard Stolzman

Kellen and Calienta move through the birch tree forest in search of the White Stag, the only one that can lead them to The Upside-Down Ocean. As they move through the ghostly trees, the haunting melody of the clarinet seems to embody the journey.

Kellen’s Sacrifice

Fix You by Coldplay

The White Stag, having reclaimed Kellen’s soul, fights the unforgiven as Kellen fights his way towards his love. Oooh! If you could only see the picture in my mind here!

If you’ve picked up your copy of the book, you also know that I wrote music for the book itself (check out the last pages 309-310). As I write this, I haven’t had the time and resources to have that recorded, but hope to one day.

In the meantime, enjoy these popular tunes and thanks to Nicky for hosting me today!

Stephanie, you are so very welcome. How could I resist a post like this, with all this music? (But, **whispers** where’s Bonnie? Total Eclipse? That song?? Just kidding)

Are you intrigued, my friends? You can listen to Stephanie’s amazing playlist in its entirety here

About The Star Child

The world is about to be cloaked in darkness.
Only one can stop the night.

Kellen St. James has spent his entire life being overlooked as an unwanted, ordinary, slightly geeky kid. That is until a beautiful girl, one who has haunted his dreams for the past eleven years of his life, shows up spinning
tales of a prophecy. Not just any old prophecy either, but one in which Kellen plays a key role.

Suddenly, Kellen finds himself on the run through a Celtic underworld of faeries and demons, angels and gods, not to mention a really ticked off pack of hellhounds, all in order to save the world from darkness. But will they make it in time?

Hall of Fame celebrates with Dana Mason: Launching Dangerous Embrace!

Roll out the red carpet!
Open the champagne!
It’s time to enter the Hall of Fame!

Today, we’re partying in honour of my Sapphire Star Publishing sister, the one and only Dana Mason! Dana launches her debut novel, Dangerous Embrace today and I am really excited to be part of the launch day extravaganza.

Dana shares her road to publication…

When I started writing Dangerous Embrace, I had no idea it would lead me here. I didn’t even think I could get my best friend to read the story. Until Dangerous Embrace was sent out for editing, Amy and Katie from Sapphire Star Publishing were the only two people, besides myself, who had read the novel from beginning to end.

When Sapphire Star posted the Month of Romance contest on their website, I decided to take the leap and submit. It was my very first submission for Dangerous Embrace, and the novel wasn’t even finished. I was still in the process of revising and editing. Fortunately they didn’t require completed manuscripts for the contest.

I couldn’t believe it when on the morning of March 10, 2012, I received the email from Amy offering me a publishing contract. I remember getting out of bed in the wee early hours of the morning and creeping into my office to check my email. While I didn’t think I had a chance of getting a positive response, I still hoped.

The rest is history…

…indeed! In fact, this is where it all begins. HUGE congratulations on your launch day, Dana, I am so excited for you. This is a tremendous moment and I hope you’re having the best time… ever! Here’s an excerpt of your masterpiece, let’s take a look…

Dangerous Embrace: the excerpt

Sarah pried open her heavy eyelids and turned, trying to focus on the clock. “Ow, dammit!” She clenched her teeth and looked down at the sling tied to her arm. The smothering realization pressed on her chest. When the nausea hit, she flung the covers off and rushed to the bathroom, fighting to get to the toilet before her stomach heaved.

When the painful dry heaving stopped, she lay back on the cold tile floor, exhausted, and waited for the room to stop spinning. Her ragged breaths roared in her ears and seemed to echo in the quiet room. When her breathing slowed, the silence ebbed around her in waves, but when footsteps approached the bathroom door, she tensed again.

A bead of sweat dripped down her scalp and at the same time someone tapped at the door. Her pulse spiked and she fought like hell to remember who brought her home from the hospital.

She closed her eyes. “Who’s there?” The waver in her voice pissed her off. Gawd-please don’t let me be pathetic in front of whoever this is.

A hesitant and completely unfamiliar man’s voice said, “Are you all right? Do you need something?”

Sarah sucked in a hard breath. “Um…” She exhaled slowly. “Who are you?”

“Mark Summors.”

She stiffened and tried to sit up. “Do I know you?” she asked her voice pitching.

“I can explain if you open the door.”

She steadied herself against the bathtub. The sling had slipped up her arm, exposing the trail of bruises. She swallowed another wave of nausea and tried to put the pieces together. Mark Summors? She glanced around for something to use as a weapon just in case, then she wanted to laugh-and cry. Who the hell was she kidding? She rolled her eyes. Good plan, Sarah, take on a strange guy with a toilet brush.

“Can I come in?”  His voice was muffled as if he was resting his face against the door.

“Go ahead.” She clamped her mouth closed to suppress a shiver, then said, “It’s unlocked.”

The door eased open and a cup of water shot out at her.

“Oh, thank you,” she cried out, relieved to wash the disgusting film out of her mouth. She snatched the cup out of his hand and gulped it, letting her eyes lift above the rim to see his face.

“Ah.” Sarah choked and inhaled the water. She set the cup down, almost upending it as she dropped it. “Oh my God!” She would never forget those intense blue eyes, just like she would never forget the smell of her attacker’s breath. They were all thrown together in the same horrifying memory.

Wow! You have totally got me hooked. I can’t wait to read the whole book, it’s all ready and waiting for me on my Kindle!

And for all of those out there duly intrigued, as me, you can get your very own copy of Dangerous Embrace on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.

Last thing… let’s hear about you, Dana Mason, the author! 🙂

About Dana Mason

Dana Mason started writing to prove to her computer geek husband and her math & science geek kids that she actually has a brain; it’s just a right functioning brain instead of a left. She’s lived all over the country and uses that experience in her writing and character studies. Her debut novel, Dangerous Embrace, is the first in a contemporary romance series about a group of friends from Northern California who learn just how short life can be when you don’t hold on to what’s important. Second chances don’t come easy…but sometimes love is worth the risk.

When not writing, Dana specializes in professional development and training. She’s also a board member on the local Art’s Council and does what she can to support the art community.

As an avid reader and movie watcher, she always requires a happily ever after ending.

Visit Dana at her website or blog, follow her on Twitter, find her on Facebook or check out her author pages at Sapphire Star and Goodreads.

Rock on, Dana, I hope you have a terrific launch and I’m sending you big, completely harmless but loving hugs!!!

CentreStage with Gilli Allan: Getting All Torn Up over Designing the Cover for Torn

Welcome to a special Saturday edition of CentreStage!

CentreStage features amazing authors from around the world. These authors may share with you their life stories, their stories, the story of their stories, or anything else that takes their fancy. Today, it is my great pleasure to welcome back my lovely friend, Gilli Allan. Not too long ago, Gilli visited here to introduce us to her novel, Life Class which I subsequently read and enjoyed immensely!

I asked her to come back some time and tell us how it’s all going. Well, today, here she is! Gilli talks about the launch and relaunch of her novel, Torn. Yes, launch and relaunch. At the same time. Read on to find out more!

A New Cover and a new format! TORN – Now in paperback as well as e-book.

When I first published TORN I designed my own cover, using my own photograph. Though I’ve always liked the image, I never felt it did the novel justice and wasn’t doing its job of drawing the reader in.    So, when I decided to publish TORN in paperback, with Create Space, I wanted a new, more dramatic cover; a cover which more strongly conveys the main themes of the book. You can never take anything for granted.  Even the sunniest, most inviting prospect can have pitfalls and dangers.  And sometimes the obstacles to what you think you want are in yourself.

Create Space offered various generic styles and templates which I could have used, but they were limiting.  I wanted to design my own cover from scratch, so I went to Bigstock, the online picture warehouse, to look for an image.   I already had an idea in mind which helped narrow down the search.  I purchased five pictures and began playing around with them.  I’d soon narrowed the choice down to one and I could proceed.

For me the design part of the process was easy.  It was the rest that was difficult. You have to precisely calculate your size – incorporating a margin for trim and an extra margin for bleed.  You also have to calculate the spine width – which is variable according to the number of pages. All this was a fairly tall order for someone like me, desperately un-techie and at school not even allowed to do exam level Maths at age sixteen.

And add that to the fact that while I was trying to get my head around all of this I was running in and out of the sitting room trying to keep tabs on team GB’s Olympic progress!

I thought I’d cracked it. I had my draft front cover and I had my draft back cover and spine.  All I needed to do was join the two together. There was a false dawn when it seemed to go right.  So I proceeded to create the final version. Wouldn’t you know it? From then on I suffered failure after failure.  It seemed so simple. To ‘stitch’ front and back together, all I needed to do was slot them side by side into my template, but they stubbornly remained too big, despite me checking the sizes over and over and over and over and…………

My online cries of distress were answered by a professional cover designer – Cathy Helms of Avalon Graphics – a friend and supporter of Famous Five Plus, the group of independently published writers I belong to.  She recalculated my template – which to my surprise I had actually got right – and gave me the invaluable tip that when it comes to designing ‘on’ and ‘for’ computers, size is not just inches or centimetres, it’s pixels!

On September 22nd TORN is launched in paperback and re-launched with its new cover, as an e-book.

Whoop! What a story, and what determination. What’s that classic Beatles song? **Sings** “I’ll get by with a little help of my friends…” I love how the cover came together for you, and isn’t it just gorgeous?

Let’s take a closer look at TORN:

Jessica may escape her old life but will she ever escape herself?

TORN is a contemporary story, which faces up to the complexities, messiness and absurdities in modern relationships. Life is not a fairy tale; it can be confusing and difficult. Sex is not always awesome; it can be awkward and embarrassing, and it has consequences. You don’t always fall for Mr Right, even if he falls for you. And realising you’re in love is not always good news. It can make the future look daunting.

Jess has made a series of bad choices. Job, relationships and life-style – all have let her down. By escaping the turmoil of her London life, she is putting her young child first. This time she wants to get it right, to devote herself to being a mother. But the country does not offer the romanticised ‘good life ’idyll she pictured. There are stresses and strains here too which pull her in opposing directions. There is conflict over a new bypass. Conflict between friends with very different, and sometimes hidden, agendas. Conflict between her own nature and her good intentions.

In the face of temptation old habits die hard. She is torn between the suitable man and the unsuitable boy.

From today, TORN is available in e-Book via Amazon and Smashwords… and, of course, in Paperback edition!

Huge congratulations, Gilli, on the amazing relaunch and launch of TORN. Whoot! Wishing you all the very best for today and beyond.

And now a little bit more about Gilli herself…

I suspect I’ve always been a writer. Long before I was capable of committing more than a few laborious sentences to the page I routinely developed long and complex stories in my head, peopled typically with fairies, princes and princesses and the sons and daughters of red-Indian chieftains.

I never finished anything, but I’m nothing if not persistent and once I’d caught the writing bug I carried on throughout my teenage years making many beginnings to various, and increasingly morbid stories.

My career was in advertising where I worked as an illustrator. When I stopped work to have my son, I started writing again. The first two novels I finished were immediately taken on by a new independent publisher. Sadly, my publisher failed to achieve the marketing, promotion and distribution necessary to achieve success for itself or for its new authors. It folded after a few years and since those days the world of publishing has changed completely. This is why, in a time when publishers and agents are increasingly risk averse, I decided to self-publish my novel TORN. I found an e-publisher for my next book Life Class, but they folded before bringing it out. So I have self-published Life Class as well.

Even now, many books later, I cannot follow any kind of formula in my writing. Love may still be the engine of the plot, not that my characters are necessarily aware of this, but I try to write honestly, refusing to romanticise the downsides and the pitfalls in modern relationships.

Come and visit me on the Gilli Allan blog, on Famous Five Plus, or on the  British Romance Fiction blog. You can find me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter, and I am also a Goodreads author!

Thanks so much for visiting today, Gilli, and for sharing the trials and tribulations of cover design with us. It was worth it in the end!

Over to you! I think Gilli offers some amazing tips for aspiring cover artists! Have you ever designed your own cover for paperback publication?
