DEAD HOPE releases! #Thriller #Suspense #Kindle

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t somewhat overwhelmed to be releasing my eighth book today. When I launched my first novel onto the world, I didn’t dare dream that six years later, I’d have produced seven more books. And yet here I am. Hooray!

dead-hope-delivery

Although this isn’t perhaps quite the genre you might expect from me. DEAD HOPE is a thriller, a fusion of crime, suspense and yes, a touch of romance. I suppose it was inevitable that I’d go down this road eventually, given that I read crime and thrillers by the truckload; but for those of you who know the funny, dreamy, romantic side of me and my writing, this may be a surprise. But don’t be deterred, this is still me writing. You’ll recognise my voice and my lovely light touch at every step of the way, and I promise the story will draw you in and pull you along just the same.

DEAD HOPE was a real labour of love. (How’s that for irony?) The experience of writing this book was a bit like being told at your twenty week scan that you’ll be having a girl and then delivering a boy, kicking and screaming. Conceived under the title “Deep Cover”, this novel was born as a romantic comedy: what happens if you take the rock star out of his glamorous habitat and throw him in the real world with no money (or at least not very much), no perks, no music, and a normal nine-to-five job?

And yet what emerged, after many a transformation, was a thriller, a suspense, a crime novel that doesn’t feature a male rock star but instead focuses on the plight of the daughter of a rock star couple (I like my unexpected twists!). And the comedy was subsumed by the urgent desire to find out what happened to the rock daughter’s parents nearly two decades ago.

It was interesting and challenging to write this book. I researched a lot of things about the police system, the court system, sentences, and forensics, all in the name of bringing you the best, most plausible story I could possibly put together. And here it is, today, the result: DEAD HOPE!

dead-hope-nicky-wells

Cat Hope doesn’t want to go to prison. She needs a job, and she needs it fast: judge’s orders.

Kay Mahon, office worker by day and hacker by night, is on the run from a past life that he’d rather not remember.

When their paths cross, they begin to investigate the truth behind the deaths of Cat’s parents, the successful rock star couple Jackie and Adam Hope. Little do they know that their quest is putting Cat in grave danger.

And here’s the sales stuff:

Paperback: UK | US

Kindle: UK | US

And the really good news is that DEAD HOPE is on an introductory offer of only 99p/99c on Kindle!! So why not go grab your copy right now?

And last but not least: THANK YOU!

Yes, indeed. Thank YOU! If it weren’t for you and your imagination giving my stories pictures and wings, then there wouldn’t be any point in me writing them. I’m thrilled (see what I did there?) that you’re part of my journey, and I thank you for coming along for the ride. I hope you enjoy, and I’d love to hear what you think of DEAD HOPE. 🙂

It’s a hard life. #MusicMonday

 Welcome to Music Monday!NewMusicMondayLogo

This is the special “playlist for 7 Years Bad Sex” series. Today is a royal instalment, and it’s an epic choice!

Just imagine. Casey and Alex are on their honeymoon. Newly married. Excited. Loved up. Except… the romance doesn’t work out. Not at all. It’s a hard life, right, to be two people together? This song totally captures the emotions of my two leading characters towards the middle and end of the plot.

Plus consider this nugget from the blurb:

After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

See. Perfect song choice. I hope you’re intrigued!

See you next Monday for the second song on the 7 Years Bad Sex playlist…

Not sure what 7 Years Bad Sex is all about? Find out more HERE.

Uncovering the magic: Fairy Tale in New York #Christmas #Romance #Rock

New York. A restaurant near Park Avenue. It’s early evening, and dusk is falling. So is the snow. Jude and Carrie are merely killing time while they wait for their return flight to London. They don’t know yet that their life will never be the same…

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00065]

‘Um.’ Carrie leaned forward and dropped her voice to a whisper. ‘You know that scene in Pretty Woman? In the bar? I’ve always wanted to try that out.’

Jude burst out laughing, startling Maya. ‘Sorry, babycakes, I didn’t mean to frighten you,’ he cooed and scooped her onto his lap. ‘Your mummy is propositioning me in the most outrageous manner, you know. Quite scandalous.’

‘Shush,’ Carrie hissed. ‘What if she understands you?’
‘She won’t,’ Jude replied calmly. ‘How could she?’
‘You know what they say about not talking to your baby in a baby voice…’
‘Well, I’m right on track, aren’t I?’ Jude replied mischievously. ‘As for your proposition…well, I must say… you’re on. I suppose we’d better get this young lady tucked up first, don’t you?’
Carrie chuckled. ‘Are we naughty, or what?’
‘Not naughty,’ Jude corrected gently. ‘Just in love. Let’s go.’

He stepped up to the counter to pay at the till while Carrie put Maya back into her coat and hat. The little girl was droopy and tired and glared at Carrie around a thumb plugged firmly into her mouth. Carrie kissed her nose and tugged her hat down a little further. ‘Nearly time for your bath and bed,’ she told her daughter. ‘It’s not far to the hotel.’

Jude lifted Maya into her sling and fastened it securely. He gave a quick nod towards the window. ‘Have you noticed? It’s snowing.’
‘Really?’ Carrie squealed and pressed her nose to the window like a small child. ‘Omigod, so it is! Could this day end any more perfect?’
‘I don’t know about perfect,’ Jude grumbled. ‘Let’s hope it’s a temporary flurry.’
‘Oh, I’m sure it will be,’ Carrie mused. ‘You know me and snow. It never snows where I am. And if it does, it doesn’t stick. But it’s so romantic. Just think, we could light some candles and sit at the piano together and watch the snow fall onto Park Avenue…maybe have a glass of vino…’
‘Is that before or after we try that scene from Pretty Woman?’
‘You and your one-track mind.’ Carrie pretended to pout and threw a glove at Jude.
‘Hey, that’s not fair!’ Jude caught the glove and laughed. ‘You suggested it.’
‘That was before!’
‘Before what?’
‘Before it snowed!’
Jude shook with laughter all over. ‘How does that change anything?’
‘Well, you know.’ Carrie wrapped her scarf around her neck and donned her own woolly hat. ‘I never get to sit in a suite in a glamorous hotel and watch the snow fall, so that’s pretty special, don’t you see? I’ve got to enjoy this moment.’
‘And so you shall. Just as soon as we’ve both enjoyed something else.’
‘Tsk. Honestly. Anyone would think you’re a rock star, the way you carry on.’

Can’t you just picture the scene? Don’t you just wish you could be there?

Well, I can’t quite magic you there, but I can invite you to ride along with Carrie and Jude’s incredible rollercoaster of magical events in my latest masterpiece, Fairy Tale in New York.

Fairy Tale in New York

When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet.

No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. And now, a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya are stuck far from home.

Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.

How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.

Confessions of a Blogaholic

My name is Nicky Wells, and I’m a blogaholic.

There, I said it. I’m a blogaholic, and I’ve been in rehab. That’s why it’s been so quiet around here.

You see, what happened is this. Once upon a time, I was a enthusiastic debut author who started blogging to support her platform. I came at this technology completely innocent. I had no idea that there was a huge community of fabulous bloggers out there dedicated to their cause and content. It was a complete revelation. The possibilities were endless! The universe was mine for the taking!

So I grabbed at it with both hands, and then some. I spent hours designing my blog, forging links, building relationships, garnering a following. I developed a schedule that involved music and guests and posts about writing. My blog was thriving, and so was I. It was a heady, breathless, exciting time, and I cherished every moment of it.

Some of my highlight moments...

Some of my highlight moments…

But then, gradually, imperceptibly, things began to change. I no longer owned my blog, but rather my blog owned me. My blog turned into the Mephistopheles to my Faust. I became obsessed. I dreamed about my blog—when I wasn’t in the throes of blog-induced insomnia, that is. I worried about content. I fretted about comments. The blog became the focal point of my life. I would be out and about with the family, snapping photos… for the blog. I would be writing down little anecdotes… for the blog. I became consumed with awards, challenges, memes, blog hops, more awards, more hops…. Moreover, I had connected with so many amazing blogs and bloggers that I was running myself ragged, literally, trying to follow, support, comment, share the love, and keep my head above water.

And therein lay the problem. I didn’t keep my head above water. I couldn’t! Not even remotely. You know I can’t swim, right? Joking apart, I felt like I was drowning. Eventually, one day, everything came crashing down on me and I asked myself—what the heck am I doing, and why? Me, the most energetic, enthusiastic, zesty person I know (ha!), quite suddenly lost her oomph. What a shock!

Now I don’t like to whinge. Life’s simply too short. So just before Christmas last year, I took stock, and I put myself into blogging rehab. In other words, I decided to cut myself some slack, give myself a break, and put blogging on hold for a while. In corporate terms, I undertook some strategic regrouping.

Well, now. I’m not quite there yet with the strategic regrouping. I’m not quite cured. I can feel the obsession pulling at me once again even as I type. However, so many of you have been in touch with emails and via social media to ask when my blog will return to normal that I thought I’d emit a little sign of life. I am here, my friends, and I thank you for your patience and your support. You rock! And it’s for you that I’m blogging.

Therefore — to mix a few metaphors — I’m going to put the cart behind the horse once again, and then get back on the horse. Romance That Rocks Your World! is back in action but, for the time being, according to no fixed schedule. You’ll hear from me whenever possible, but I’m not committing to anything. I’m going write with pride and joy, and I’m going to have fun when I’m here—which means you’ll have fun along the way… just not according to a strict pattern. But hey, that’s the spice of life, right?

Most importantly, as I’m less blog-o-centred, I’m writing books faster than ever. Fallen For Rock, my fourth full-length novel, is finished and currently awaiting feedback from betareaders. Publication date is 1 July. My next Christmas novella is well under way, and once I’ve finished writing that—probably in about May time—I’ll start writing my fifth novel, which is completely planned in outline format. So the time that I don’t spend fretting about blogging I spend writing books which, ultimately, is what I’m all about. Does that make sense?

I hope it does.

So I remain with renewed vim and vigour and a cautious dose of bloptimism… Yours in rock and books,

Nicky Wells (blogaholic)
🙂

How about you? Have you ever fallen out of love with blogging? How did you cope, and what did you do to reignite the passion? I’d love to hear from you!

I simply cannot tell you how excited I am about this, my third publication this year!! Give yourself up to a bit of festive fun with…

Spirits of Christmas
~ A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol!

SpiritsChristmas_NW_Cover_500

There. I bet it all makes sense now… #rock #romance #ghosts #novella… the only clue I left out was #Christmas! Here’s the blurb:

At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

This novella is out NOW. Yes, right now!
Only £1.53 or $2.99 on Kindle, and £4.00 or $6.00 in paperback**:

Amazon.co.uk Kindle | Amazon.co.uk Paperback
Amazon.com Kindle | Amazon.com Paperback

**In fact, at this precise moment in time, Amazon has very kindly, and without my influence, discounted the paperbacks slightly, so they’re even cheaper than advertised here!! No idea how long this will last, so check it out while you can. 🙂

Why?

Well, you already know I love rock music and romance. If you’ve been hanging out around this blog for a while, you’ll also know I love the Christmas season. Writing something to combine all three was a bit of an inevitability, really!

The idea for this book came to me the very night after I launched my second book, Sophie’s Run, in February of this year. I was hyped up with excitement, I had finished writing my third book and was waiting for publisher edits, and I had already planned my fourth full-length novel. I was utterly and completely unable to sleep with everything that was going on, and quite unexpectedly, the whole story was in my head. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite Christmas stories both in the original and its many varied adaptations. I suddenly thought… why not bring it into the rock’n’roll domain?

My wonderful husband, Jon, was somewhat taken aback when I presented him with this plan the following morning.

‘I’m going to write a Christmas novella,’ I said.

‘But you’ve got another book launch in September, and you’ve planned your fourth book already—how’s this going to fit in?’ he responded enthusiastically, if pragmatic.

‘I’ll figure it out.’

And so I did. It took me just over a week to write the first draft in May 2013, and another few weeks here and there to tweak, fine-tune and polish it over the following months. But here it is. Spirits of Christmas. I hope you enjoy!

The Season of Cheer and Goodwill Starts Right Here!

As always, I am stunned, overwhelmed, honoured and humbled by the support I am receiving from the wonderful friends I have made during my authorly journey to date. I am proud to know each and every one of these bloggers, fellow authors, and reviewers, and their unwavering support and tireless enthusiasm mean the world. I know it’s a cliché, but it really does mean the world to me.

This is the place where I say THANK YOU to everyone who will be putting me and The Spirits of Christmas up on their blogs to help spread the joy, whether by review or promo post, or both. YOU ROCK, ladies and gentlemen!
