ImageMIA, AWOL, Off the Radar—I may be gone some time… but I’ll Be Back!
She’s going to ground, MIA, AWOL, and generally pulling a total disappearing act… This here author is retreating to her study to write her most exciting book yet (during a self-imposed complete social media ban)!
Friends, readers and fellow romance lovers! I’m going away, but in a good cause.
The backend of 2014 was somewhat chaotic for me, and I had to take on a few commitments that took me away from writing. Now I’m somewhat behind on my next book. Actually, scratch that. I’m a lot behind on my next book.
I am nonetheless determined to bring you my next book as soon as I can, and it’s quite possibly my most ambitious one yet. It’s a romantic comedy with a bit of bite. “Seven Years Bad Sex” looks at a toasting superstition gone seriously wrong, and a young married couple’s complete inability to get… romantic. Cue all manner of hilarious and occasionally desperate antics!
To complete this masterpiece, I am taking a leave of absence from social media. Yup, you read that right. Complete and utter radio silence. I’m already shaking with withdrawal symptoms, but it’s got to be done. For the next two to three months, I’m going to use every available minute to write, write, write, until it’s done. I won’t be on Facebook, and I apologise in advance if I miss your birthday or any other significant events. I won’t be on Twitter. I won’t be blogging. I will be well and truly M.I.A.
Please bear with me and forget me not. Writing is paramount to me, and I am so keen to bring you my next book! I’ll be in touch when I surface from my self-imposed ban. In fact, I have an exciting re-entry strategy, and you’ll definitely know when I’m BACK!
In the meantime, you can reach me via the contact page, anytime. Thank you for your support and understanding. See you soon!
Love
~Nicky

Highlights and Resolutions: Happy New Year!
It’s 2015! Isn’t that amazing? 2015. Two thousand and fifteen. Fifteen years into the 21st century. The very notion seemed light years away when I was but fifteen. It was the other side of the great millennium divide after all. And my, has the world changed! When I was fifteen, we had mobile phones the size of bricks, and texting hadn’t been invented. The Internet was but a nerd’s secret dream. Televisions still contained cathode tubes, and cars were driving with all sorts of really unhealthy fuels. And yet that was only a few short decades ago. Weird, huh?
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all! May it be a fabulous one that makes all your dreams come true. 🙂
Here’s the year that was for me, my own personal highlights.
A fabulous rock concert–the kids’ first!

The Big Rock Gig–the boys’ first–and we loved every minute… Especially when Europe delivered The Final Countdown!
Birthdays and life celebrations, including a bona fide Ceilidh in April
Book launch #1: Fallen for Rock. Because I love rock stars (but you already knew that!)

Red pen at the ready again… but no, I did a good job, haven’t found anything else to correct yet! Rock on, Fallen for Rock!
Starting my own radio show! BOOKS ROCK on Siren 107.3 FM! The first season comprised seven monthly shows and you can listen to the entire archive via podcasts!
Summer holidays in and near Whitby….
Book launch #2: Fairy Tale in New York. Because I love Christmas!
Autumn holidays in Wales and the West of England–the Wells family took one fabulous road trip visiting castles, waterfalls, gold mines, manor houses and friends. AWESOME!
Family time: Building the family gingerbread house. Priceless moments!

One Gingerbread House, all done and dusted. Literally and liberally dusted with icing sugar. That wasn’t in the instructions, but we like to improvise. We’re very proud of our little gingerbread house!
And of course the Christmas time was full of more priceless moments, including seeing the children’s carol concerts (one in Lincoln cathedral, no less), a hilarious panto, and a fabulous family Christmas. I feel truly blessed!
Thank YOU for all your support throughout the year. I loved every email, every tweet, every Facebook share, every message, and every letter you sent me. They keep me going, and I love hearing from you, so please stay in touch! 😀
And here are my resolutions for 2015.
~Spend much more time with the family and enjoy every moment of that precious time right down to the tiniest second
~Slow down, breathe, and focus on the things that matter
~Write and publish at least one book
~Take up singing lessons
There you go. Nothing too ambitious. After the manic few years that I’ve had of late, I think I owe myself a stock-taking year, and that’s exactly what I have in mind.
What about you? Any highlights and resolutions to share?
Happy Christmas, one and all!
Dearest friends and readers! ’tis the season to be jolly, so here’s wishing you all a wonderful Christmas! Be merry, eat chocolate, and may the bubbles flow. 😀
Thank you for all your support during 2014. I hope you all enjoyed the ride, and that you’re getting a well-deserved rest with plenty of jollification and the odd present here or there over the festive period. Let the good times roll! XXX
The Family Gingerbread House #Christmas #Fun
You all know how much I love the Christmas season. And so do my kids. I’m turning them into regular anti-Grinches! Last weekend, we made a Gingerbread house together. And before you think I’m some kind of domestic goddess (which, of course, I am–just not all of the time!), I confess: we bought a build-your-own-kit. I suppose we could have made the lot from scratch, but I deemed it safer to have some sturdy ingredients. Nonetheless, huge amounts of fun were had by all. We’re planning to demolish the house on Christmas Eve… if we can convince ourselves to tear it down!

Putting the roof on. See all that white squishy stuff? That’s royal icing. Never made that before; it was a real education. It’s ready to use when it’s got the consistency of wet cement, and it dries just as hard. Tastes better though!

Ta-da! One gingerbread house, all done and dusted. Literally and liberally dusted… with lots and lots of icing sugar. That part wasn’t in the instructions, but we like to improvise. We’re very proud of our little gingerbread house!
Ho Ho ho! Have you built yours yet? What’s your favourite Christmas ‘craft’ activity?
Wishing you a happy first Sunday of Advent!
It’s officially the festive season! HOORAY! And our rejuvenated advent wreath is looking fabulous. Hope you’re all doing great and singing lots of carols. I know I am, LOL! 🙂 XX
Restoration Woman: Project Advent Wreath
Next week marks the beginning of the Advent season, the countdown of the last four Sundays before Christmas. I grew up with the German tradition of lighting a candle on an ‘Advent wreath’ on each of these Sundays until all four candles would be lit. The lighting ceremony usually involved a darkened room, Christmas carols, hot chocolate, and biscuits, and this really ‘made’ the season for me as a child.
I’ve continued this custom here in the UK with the help of a genuine, bona-fide Advent wreath made by the good people in the Harzgebirge (a region famous for making Christmas decorations) and exported to London. I purchased that wreath some sixteen years ago in a bucket shop selling cheapie TVs (probably off the back of a lorry! Goodness knows what possessed the owner to stock Advent wreaths as well unless… they fell off the back… ah, never mind, better not ask) on the Tottenham Court Road.
I’ll never forget the day, simply because I was so delighted with my find. It was a Friday, and it was pouring with rain. I was on my way home from work, en route from Piccadilly (whence the office was based) to my shared flat in Covent Garden via Tottenham Court Road and the local supermarket. It was pouring with rain and for some reason, a display in the back of that particular store caught my eye. I couldn’t quite believe it: Advent wreaths, in a TV shop. The real thing! Complete with candles! Only in London, right?
I stormed in, expecting the treasure to be ludicrously expensive and thus out of my financial reach but oh, oh! It was only £3.00. Yes. Three pounds. THREE! Needless to say, I bought one, even though perhaps it wasn’t completely to my taste. But that didn’t matter, it was the real thing, and it would light my days.
I knew that I would be spending Christmas in London in my dismal shared flat, although not entirely alone because two friends (yes, that would be you, Karen McL and Patricia O!) were also ‘stuck’ in Blighty, and we had decided to have a jolly Christmas together, us three expats. And the wreath… well, it doubled as a Christmas tree.
Since then, the wreath has come out every year to brighten the season. It moved house with me, and later my husband and kids, no less than a dozen times!
However…. Sixteen years later, I have to confess, I grew a little tired of the battered old pine cones and tacky bows. This past weekend, my hubs, the kids and I embarked on a restoration project to breathe a new lease of life into this wreath. Okay, I admit it: we tried on numerous occasions to replace it; we even placed an order with a local florist three times to get a ‘real’ wreath, but all efforts failed. So this year… we’ve made it happen on our terms. What do you think?

The most painful part of the operation done: gone are the bows and some of the worst cones. Stripped, bare, ready for makeover!
Do you have any Christmassy traditions from your childhood that you cling to, come what may?
