TRUE FRIENDSHIP

Today, Patricia Sands writes about friendship, the central idea in her award-winning novel, The Bridge Club

How far would you go to help a close friend? Is there a place where you might draw the line and simply have to say no?

The Bridge Club reminds us of the complexities of women’s friendships through an entertaining and often moving tale of eight women whose lives intersect once a month initially to play the game of bridge. What began as one night turns into four decades that span the segments of a woman’s journey from youthful optimism to embracing the challenges and opportunities presented in life’s later years.

Although The Bridge Club is fiction, it is closely based on my own real-life bridge club, still going strong! The women were happy to share their stories and have been my biggest cheerleaders since publishing. They are true girlfriends!

When I’m asked to speak to women’s groups, one fact I love to stress is that whether you are 25 or 85, true girlfriends are always true girlfriends. Some things never change!

The story weaves the reader through a maze of life’s inevitable scenarios and I love hearing from readers who tell me they relate to many of the characters. You will no doubt see someone you know in this story!

Throughout the novel each of the characters faces challenges and change in her life. The Bridge Club emphasizes how honest and loyal friendship helped to enable these changes and how these women empowered and learned from each other in the process.

Through laughter, tears, and everything in between the story meets life head on and affirms that a strong foundation of friendship is a priceless asset. The only thing, in fact, that allows them to face the final chapter’s unimaginable challenge.

The Bridge Club is available in paperback and Kindle editions from Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com, Amazon.ca and Amazon Kindle.

About Patricia Sands

Patricia Sands has stories to tell. In fact, she believes so do we all. Encouraging others to value and share their stories is part of what she works to accomplish through her writing and speaking.

A writer and published author, she is also a blogger and professional speaker: all this since she turned sixty-five. She feels that life continues to present opportunities no matter what our age and it is our choice whether or not we embrace these new possibilities.  Be a “possibilitarian”!

A strong advocate for the importance of friendship, her talks stress the value of the connections women make in their lives and how we are able to empower each other.

Patricia lives in Toronto and has degrees from the University of Waterloo and York University. With a happily blended family of seven adult children and, at last count, six grandchildren, life is full and time is short. Beginning with her first Kodak Brownie camera at the age of six, she has told stories all of her life through photography.

Her award-winning debut novel, The Bridge Club, was published through iUniverse in September 2010 and was a finalist in the Foreword Reviews 2010 Book Of The Year (general fiction) and the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards (First Novel – over 80,000 words).  Also a Flash Fiction Finalist (Winter 2010) with Women on Writing, her work was recently included in the anthology “Canadian Imprints” published by the Writers and Editors Network. She is currently working on her next novel.

“It’s never too late to begin something new,” she enthuses. “As the saying goes, just do it!”

What a rousing finale!  I wholeheartedly agree, Patricia!  Thank you for sharing your thoughts and introducing us to your book here today.  To find out more about Patricia, visit her blog or website.  You can also follow Patricia on Twitter or find her on Facebook.

CentreStage with Anneli Purchase

Welcome to the third edition of CentreStageCentreStage is a new feature on my blog that will showcase fantastic authors from across the world, introducing in particular my fellow authors in the Sapphire Star Publishing family, as well as fellow featured authors at loveahappyending.com.  In this new, exciting feature, these authors might write for you about their lives, or their writing journey, or anything else that matters to them.  Every feature will be different in format and flavour, so watch out for a variety of stories and tales.

Today, it is my tremendous pleasure to welcome lovehappyending.com featured author Anneli Purchase to this edition of CentreStage!

Anneli writes about the inspiration for her novel:

For the last thirty-three years, my husband has been a commercial fisherman. Having a troller gave us opportunities to see British Columbia’s beautiful coast in a way most people never can. When it wasn’t fishing time, we often used the boat to do camping trips. In and out of inlets and bays along the coast and among the islands, we had floating holidays.

Over the years we met many fascinating and unique personalities among the fishermen and other boaters. I wanted to use some of these rich experiences as a basis for a novel. None of the characters in my novel are real, but some of them are composites of people I’ve met, with a huge dose of imagination added.

I needed a naive woman to be my protagonist. Andrea fit the bill perfectly. In my book, The Wind Weeps, Andrea comes to B.C. to find adventure and love. She finds more than enough of both. From Comox on Vancouver Island, to Lund across the water on the B.C. mainland, and then up the coast to Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands, Andrea gains a first-hand, in-depth look into the life of a commercial fisherman, all the while dealing with her personal relationships with the two handsome men in her life.

And then there’s the French-Canadian woman, who loves Andrea from the day they first meet. What’s to be done about Monique?

Andrea eventually finds herself in a situation where she fears for her life. She is no longer the naive girl from Ontario, but we wonder if her recently acquired survival skills will be enough to save her life? Read The Wind Weeps and find out.

Available now at amazon.com as a paperback and Kindle e-book and at Barnes and Noble for paperback and Nook. For all e-book formats, visit Smashwords.com.

CentreStage on Nicky’s Blog: Bonnie Trachtenberg

Welcome to the second edition of CentreStage!

CentreStage is a new feature on my blog that will showcase fantastic authors from around the world, introducing in particular my fellow authors in the Sapphire Star Publishing family, as well as fellow featured authors at loveahappyending.com.  In this new, exciting feature, these authors might write for you about their lives, or their writing journey, or anything else that matters to them.  Every feature will be different in format and flavour, so watch out for a variety of stories and tales.

Today, it is my tremendous pleasure to welcome loveahappyending.com featured author, Bonnie Trachtenberg!  Bonnie writes romantic comedy, and today she talks about her spiritual side… and how that features in her amazing novels!

Bonnie Trachtenberg writes:  “When the Spirit Grabbed Me”

There are no accidents—or so I’ve come to believe on my journey through life. That fact takes a bit of the sting out of some life’s more difficult events. If you believe there is a reason for everything, you spend less time fretting and feeling sorry for yourself, and more time figuring out exactly what it is you are supposed to be learning from the experience. Life is a school, after all, and don’t we all want to graduate with honors?

That is merely one of the pearls I’ve collected on my ongoing search for ultimate wisdom. This odyssey began in my childhood, with distinct memories of places I’d never visited and people I didn’t know. As I had an active imagination, I chalked them up to dreams, but something in me always knew there was more to life than what I could perceive with my five senses. I often felt a loving, otherworldly, presence around me, though nobody in my family ever made mention of such things.

I will never forget the day when, as an adolescent, I caught a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror, and, for just a few moments, felt separate from that young girl. It was the first time I became consciously aware that my spirit was a separate entity from my body—that this was just one of my “outfits” and there had been many others. Needless to say it was a pretty mind-blowing experience for a preteen!

Around that time, I began reading anything and everything I could find on every spiritual topic from reincarnation to out-of-body experiences, ghosts to psychic phenomena, energy healing to synchronicity and beyond. My preferred game was the Ouija board, which I’ve since come to learn was a fairly dangerous “toy” to being playing with unprotected. Since then, my enthrallment with the spiritual world has never wavered.

As an adult, one of my favorite places to be is in a spiritual book store. I’ve spent many blissful hours there, oftentimes with my best friend, Cathy (a kindred spirit for sure). For the last decade or so, my greatest concentration of study has been the afterlife. I know the reason for this is not based in fear of my own death, as I firmly believe we go to a much better place, but rather, in fear of the death of my loved ones. I dread being left in this often-harsh realm without the people I love most. One-way conversations seem like quite a lonely prospect and I’ve prayed for the ability to see and hear those who have passed.

I’ve visited gifted mediums in search of proof. Interestingly (and unprovoked) several have told me I possess the gift of healing and should be using it. (I did become a Reiki master last year and occasionally use my hands to help myself, my animals and my husband when he lets me.) I have, on several occasions, exhibited precognitive abilities (dreaming things before they come true). I enlisted in psychic development classes and realized, to my amazement, my capabilities far exceed what I imagined them to be. This gives me hope that perhaps, one day, I will be able to communicate directly with loved ones on the other side of the veil. I’ve also learned that the key to everything spiritual lies in meditation, something I strive to do every day if possible. Since beginning that practice, I’ve had two out-of-body experiences (extremely cool!), and have witnessed spiritual activity in my home that cannot be explained any other way.

Being that I write romantic comedies, most people might not expect spirituality to enter into my work, but it has. In fact, it’s very difficult to bar it, since it has become such an integral part of who I am. In Wedlocked, you’ll find a scene where a ghost helps bring a couple together (based on a true story from my life). In my new book, due out April 25th, you’ll meet a cat who seems to possess the power to heal. Remind you of anyone? I’m about to begin work on my third novel, which will deal with near-death experiences, which, of late, have become my greatest focus. The experiences of people who have died and been brought back to life are quite astonishing, and open the door to the miracle of what comes “after”. Luckily, evidence seems to suggest a lot more than clouds and harps!

The paths we lead in life are truly remarkable when you stand back to observe them. I joined the lovely folks at Loveahappyending.com to help promote myself as a romantic comedy author and relationship columnist. To my astonishment, I found so many of my colleagues here, too, possess their own great interest, love, and fascination with the metaphysical world and often share their own stories in books, blogs and comments.  Coincidence? I doubt it. After all, there are no accidents.

Thank you so much, Bonnie, for this amazing feature.  I loved hearing about how the spiritual experiences do feature in your work… and I look forward to finding out more in your next book.  A cat with healing powers?  Bring it on!!

CentreStage: Please give it up for…. Gary Kassay!

GARY KASSAY WRITES: “HOW DID I GET HERE?”

Before I let you in on my words of wisdom (well, maybe there is some wisdom here), I want to say a big thank you to Nicky Wells for asking me to be a guest on her blog. Nicky is a wonderful author and a member of Sapphire Star Publishing.
Nicky says: Thanks, Gary! I am delighted to give you centre stage on my blog today! 🙂

Okay, on to the words of wisdom. My name is Gary Kassay, and I am the author of the Duke Becker Series, signed by Sapphire Star Publishing. When I was growing up (many, many, many years ago), the thought of being an author never, ever crossed my mind. For one thing, I was terrible in English (I was thrown out of my seventh grade class), and for another, I wanted to be a cop. Well, the world works in mysterious ways.

Back in 1982, when I was a Police Officer in NYC in the K-9 unit, a thought was put into my head, a tiny little seed of a thought. I let that seed germinate now and then for over 22 years! Life sometimes throws us curveballs, hard times, tragedies. It did that to me in 2003 and for some reason, one of the things it did was to take that little seed, which was now a full-grown tree in my head, and bring it back into my thoughts.

I started to write down the story that I had let grow, (after 22 years it really was fully grown!) and began to put it to paper. That’s right; I started to write it down in longhand, a mistake that I never made again! The story flowed easily and after only six weeks I had about 450 pages of what was to be my first novel, “Murder in Silence”.

I never thought about publishing the story; in fact I was never going to write another book. Of course, I gave copies to my family and close friends (after getting it typed up!). They all said it was good, that I had written a real suspense-filled murder mystery, that it needed to be published, and so on. (What else were they going to say?—I have a gun!) I didn’t really believe them, at first, but soon there were about 200 people who had read it and raved. They also wanted a sequel!

So, I began to write another Duke Becker book, then another, and another. I also tried for almost eight years to find a publisher, and I am happy to say that the wait was well worth it!

Well, that is how I got to be where I am, writing the fifth book in the Duke Becker Series, having the first one released on July 5, 2012,with the sequel due out in January 2012. It has been an exciting ride and I know it will only get better thanks to my fans, fellow authors, and Amy and Katie over at Sapphire Star Publishing.

Oh, if you were still waiting for the words of wisdom. I guess these will have to do. “Never close the door on your dreams, let them lead you where they may, you never know what you might have been destined for.”

About “Murder in Silence” by Gary Kassay, to be published by Sapphire Star Publishing on July 5, 2012

Two New York Police Officers have been murdered, their throats torn out. With only two clues to follow, both which make no sense, Inspector Duke Becker may be facing his first failure.   Becker is in charge of Special Investigations, Homicide…a unit that investigates high profile murder cases. Will Becker and his squad stop the brutal killer or will more Police Officers die?
