School’s Out For Summer!

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Well. And there’s really only one song that’ll do today. ’nuff said!

Have a FABULOUS summer, everyone. 🙂
Would love to hear your plans!

Me? Well, we’re having a long weekend in London to start with where we shall be exploring the city by DUCK! Next up, the kids are lucky enough to get a holiday from me for a few days when they stay at the grandparents’. 🙂 Then we’re all off to Yorkshire together for a coast’n’moors holiday. And apart from that, we have plenty of day trips and jollifications at home planned. The next six weeks will fly by, I’m sure… And you know what happens at the end of the summer holidays, right? (Hint… #SophiesEncore)

Love in a Hopeless Place: @EmmaCalin Is Blowing Her Own Trombone

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

Today, it is my great pleasure to welcome the one and only Emma Calin as part of her Blowing My Own Trombone blog tour for Love in a Hopeless Pace. Take it away, Emma!

Hello Nicky – thanks so much for letting me visit your blog to tell everyone about my new book “THE LOVE IN A HOPELESS PLACE COLLECTION

LIAHP boxed set with border

Now, this tour of mine is called the “Blowing my own Trombone Book Launch Blog Tour”.  So far, all my visits have included various video clips of me and my glissando down at the local bandstand – blowing a fanfare for the new publication.

But, knowing Nicky is a very modern girl, I wasn’t sure how her readers would react to my old wind band offering.  So instead I have a very special treat… a Vine video that I created for the new book:

Nicky’s note: I love that you’re using that song! Readers, if there’s no sound, hover your mouse over the top left hand corner to unmute the volume. 🙂

Not as polished as my usual book trailers – but it’s hard to do much with the six and a half seconds you get on Vine! I’m sure you get the message!

The ‘Love in a Hopeless Place Collection‘ is a set of five of my stand-alone titles amalgamated into one. A bargain way for you to get your hands on my gritty tales-with-a-twist.  Initially available for e-books (Kindle, iPad, Android, iPhone, Mac, PC etc on Amazon), the paperback will follow and an audiobook is in production.

The five titles in the collection are all novelettes or short stories.  They stand alone in their own right but are linked by a common theme:  the universal quest for survival, love, passion and respect against the gritty backdrop of working class life.

 Sub-Prime  – a gritty short story

The Chosen  – a short story with a twist

Escape To Love – a novelette, a suspense romance with a twist

Angela  – a short story

Love in a Hopeless Place  – a novelette, a romance.

During July and August ‘ANGELA‘ the short story from the collection is FREE – so you can even try one before you buy the set!

Angelamockup rationalised

I would like to thank Nicky for having me on her blog as part of my ‘Blowing My Own Trombone Book Launch Blog Tour’.  Don’t worry if you are feeling cheated of my brassy performance…  if you visit the blogs below you can listen to your heart’s content:

My Holy Grail: Two hits, one touch

This has been a pretty awesome week for me. In terms of my personal holy grails (of which there are many, LOL), I hit two and touched one. Alas, because of the unexpected and rather longer than predicted heat wave, my brain’s fried so I’ll give you my week in pictures rather than words.

Holy Grail, Hit 1:
Cover Reveal for Sophie’s Encore

Sophies_Encore

I had the most astounding day, with no less than 23  fabulous bloggers taking part and a HUGE amount of interest in the cover, the excerpt and the giveaway (did I mention there are two preview e-copies of Sophie’s Encore up for grabs?).

You can visit the cover reveal post here,
or see the giveaway here: a Rafflecopter giveaway

Holy Grail: Touch (A Near ‘Hit’)

st98

Yes! On Tuesday morning, I found Sophie’s Turn on the  list of the 100 best-selling romantic comedies over on amazon.com. It started at #98 and ‘worked up’ to #95 before gradually sliding back down and out over the rest of the day. But still: I touched the holy grail of charts.

Incidentally, Sophie’s Run made it onto the HUMOUR list on amazon.co.uk that same morning ~ it sunned itself in the #95 slot for a little while!

Holy Grail, Touch 2:
“This Is It” Edit

???????????????????????????????

Yup, that’s me, completing the THIS IS IT proof edit on Sophie’s Encore across yesterday and today. My third book is nearly ready to go to the printer!!
I am so insanely proud of the Grand Finale.

And that was my week.
How was yours?

Author Blog-Swap! Cover reveal for Carrie Butler’s COURAGE!

So my great friend, Carrie Butler, and I both decided to reveal the covers for our upcoming releases on the same day. We laughed and squealed in shared excitement…and then realised that it would be a massive logistical challenge to host each other’s reveals on our respective blogs alongside our own reveals on the same day.

After a moment’s silence, we hit upon the idea of the blog-swap and here we are, a mere 48 hours after the initial event, to celebrate each other’s covers all over again. Carrie’s hosting Sophie’s Encore on her blog, and it is my tremendous pleasure to give you…

Category: New Adult (NA)
Genre: Paranormal Romance (PNR)
Release: October 15, 2013
Formats: E-Book & Paperback

About Courage

Courage (Mark of Nexus #2) features four unique points-of-view. While the novel stands alone, it is best enjoyed after Strength (Mark of Nexus #1).

♥  ♥  ♥

Making a deal with the bad guys wasn’t the highlight of Rena Collins’ semester, but, hey, it saved her boyfriend. Now, in order to appease the human-altering organization known as ERA, she’ll crawl under their microscope while they study the Mark of Nexus and plot their eye-glazed version of the future—until she realizes that’s not all they’re plotting.

Wallace Blake has always known his girlfriend is unlike most girls. But now that information has surfaced regarding the two bloodlines that balance his supernatural race, he finally understands why. Rena belongs to one of them. She’s been augmenting his power, all along…

Enter: Corynn Catley. Brought into the country under the guise of an internship, she’s intended to become ERA’s secret weapon. Kind of. Her abilities cancel out Wallace’s, rendering him powerless, but that’s exactly what he’s always wanted. Too bad it only works when his girlfriend’s not around.

All the while, Rena fails to notice the crush her geeky best friend, Aiden Ross, is nursing. He’d give anything for her to see him in a new light—even reinvent himself through questionable means—but there’s a reason people are told to be careful what they wish for. Finding the courage to tell her could put everyone’s lives in danger.

Wow, right?

Sophie’s Encore: Excerpt

My bedroom door opened slowly and Dan crept in. All thought of sleep forgotten, I flicked the light back on and was met by an astonishing sight. There was Dan, the rock star, legend for his antics on and off stage, clad in a demure pair of checked pajamas with a button-up top and a mismatched, stripy dressing gown. His feet were stuffed into fluffy slippers, and he clutched a bottle and two glasses in his hands.

“Come on,” he whispered. “Dinner is served.”

I giggled and left my bed, grabbing my own stripy dressing gown and a pair of thick socks.

“What are you doing?” I breathed into his ear, but he simply took my hand and pulled me down the dark corridor toward the open-plan lounge.

“Have a seat,” he invited me and gestured at the dining table, which was once again laid, although only for two, complete with candles and napkins.

He set down the bottle and glasses and scurried off to shut the lounge door. While he busied himself in the kitchen, I basked in the heat from the fire which Dan had re-stoked, and observed my rock star with some degree of amusement.

Within a few minutes, he brought a dish of smoked salmon bites to the table, followed by olive bread, a cheese board, various cold meats, olives, pickled anchovies, and prawns with some sort of aioli dip. He popped the cork on the bottle of champagne, poured two glasses, and sat down, satisfied at last.

Now we can eat,” he announced. “Tapas. What do you think?”

I raised my glass. “Cheers,” I giggled. “So that’s what you meant earlier. I think it’s amazing. It’s like a midnight feast. I’m just waiting for matron to discover us and give us detention. Why all the secrecy?”

Dan speared a prawn and pointed it at me. “Well, for one, as you say, matron will certainly come and give us detention. Peter is very strict on my sleep regimen, you see.” He dipped the prawn into the aioli before popping it into his mouth. The beatific look on his face and his scrunched up eyes suggested he was enjoying this humble treat far more than was warranted.

He swallowed and cleared his throat. “And for another, I’m on a strict diet. Every last bit of cheese gets weighed, the carbohydrates counted, the sugar added up. It’s really tedious.” He grimaced.

I helped myself to some bread and salmon. “Tedious indeed, I can see that. But why? I thought you were supposed to eat lots and get better.” I chewed greedily, my tummy having given an impressive rumble.

Dan speared another prawn and added a mountain of cheese and bread to his place. “Bliss,” he murmured before explaining further. “I’m supposed to eat healthy, not lots. So Peter has taken it upon himself to reform the bad eating habits of a lifetime. Bless him, it’s what he’s paid to do. I’ve been going along with it, and I have to admit, I’m feeling pretty good. But…”

He grinned his school-boy grin, took a big mouthful of food, washed it down with a large gulp of champagne, and finished his thought. “Well, it gets boring. And I wanted to do something special with you. On my own.”

I burst out laughing, but quieted down when I saw the alarm on Dan’s face.

“Sorry,” I whispered.

“Peter’s bedroom is right next door there,” Dan whispered back. “And he’s a light sleeper.” He pointed his finger, and we sat in silence for a minute, straining to hear.

“I think we’re okay,” Dan finally concluded and resumed eating.

I giggled softly. “Naughty, naughty us.”

“Ha, we’re not naughty yet,” Dan shot back, speaking softly as well. “I was working up to that part.”

He winked, and my heart skipped and jumped. He didn’t mean—he couldn’t mean what I thought he meant?

“What do you mean?” I bumbled, hoping for clarification, but Dan was enjoying himself.

“All in good time,” he teased. “Let’s finish our meal first.”

Hall of Fame with Dana Mason: Celebrating PRECIOUS EMBRACE

Roll out the red carpet!
Open the champagne!
It’s time to enter the Hall of Fame!

Hall of Fame

It’s launch day at Sapphire Star Publishing and today is my publishing sister, Dana Mason’s, second book birthday! Woohoo, I cannot tell you how excited I am for Dana. So… over to you. Let’s hear it for your baby!

Launching PRECIOUS EMBRACE

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog again, Nicky! I love talking about music, which makes your blog one of my favorites! Music is an easy subject because our choices can be so varied, we never run out of things to talk about.

All of my stories have a playlist, and my new release, Precious Embrace, is no different. The beauty of this story is that I was able to incorporate a little Country and Pop in with the Rock and Roll.

Precious Embrace is about two lost people, finding a new love. The hero, Johnny Rhay Bennett is a born and bred country boy. He grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and has an accent that will make any girl swoon. He’s a bad boy turned good, with a heart of gold and more sex appeal than most girls can handle in one man. It’s this bad boy attitude and sex appeal that pumps up his determination to get what he wants. . .and Alison Hayes is what he wants. The opening scene in Precious Embrace is Johnny standing on Ali’s porch, surprising her after having just moved to California from Tennessee. Ali opens the door and there he is looking sexy as hell.

Enter Johnny’s theme song: Bad Things by Jace Everett. When most people hear this song they think of show True Blood, but I see Johnny, standing on Ali’s porch, in tight jeans, wearing a country boy smile that will accelerate any girl’s heart.

Here is the song:

Here’s a short excerpt from that scene:

Ali Hayes knew the phrase tall drink of water was cliché, and she never really understood it. But when she opened her front door and came face-to-face with Johnny Rhay Bennett, clad in tight jeans and an even tighter black t-shirt, there was no other way to describe him.

It had been two months since they’d spent the night together and she honestly never thought she’d see him again. It took her several seconds to find her voice and when she did, she had little control over what came out. “Wow. You were the last person I expected to find at my door. What are you doing here?”

“Well it’s good to see you too.” He leaned in close. “I probably should have called first, but I didn’t get your phone number the last time…,” His lips quirked into a little grin and Ali had to wet her lips because her mouth had gone dry.

She took a step back, hoping to regain her senses. Flashes of their previous brief encounters flashed in her head and she had to fight to keep from covering her face in embarrassment. The baby in her arms squirmed and started whining, unceremoniously bringing her back to the present. She shifted and rocked the baby. “Um…sorry, I’m just surprised to see you here. Are you in town to visit Sarah and Mark? They’re in Arizona on vacation. I hope you didn’t make the trip for nothing.”

“I guess they didn’t tell you the latest.” He looked from her to the open door.

“Sorry, come in.” She held the door open further and took a step back. Once she let him inside, she realized she shouldn’t have. Her house looked like a stampede of kindergartners had barged through. “Sorry about the mess. I haven’t had a moment of peace in three days.”

Johnny looked around and said, “You alone? Did Jamie go with Mark and Sarah?”

“Yeah, he went with his dad.” Micah kicked out and started crying. Ali wanted to cry too. She bounced him, which only made him more irritable. “So what’s the latest?” she asked Johnny.

“Oh, ah…I’ve moved out here permanently.”

She drew back. “I’m sorry, what?”

His smile faltered a little and he said, “You’re looking at Santa Rosa’s newest detective.”

“Why would you move…why California? I thought you loved Nashville.”

“No…well, it’s alright I guess, but I was never in love with the place.”

pRECIOUS EMBRACE

Precious Embrace Synopsis

A new love, a missing child, a family found.

A second divorce and a new baby wasn’t the vision Alison Hayes had for her future. Now a single mother with two young boys, she wants to focus on her kids and what’s left of her stagnant career. When Detective Johnny Rhay Bennett breezes into her life with his country-boy accent, she wants to run. She doesn’t need another man in her life, or another reason to make people talk. But when her worst nightmare becomes a reality, Johnny is the only person who can pull Ali out of her despair, forcing her to stay strong and not give up hope of finding her missing child.

Who falls in love after a one-night stand? Johnny Rhay doesn’t believe it’s possible until it happens to him. With Nashville in his rear-view mirror, he’s determined to convince Alison she loves him too, even if it means moving to the West Coast.

Ali’s not easy, and she’s living on just this side of bitter after her divorce, but Johnny doesn’t care. He’s up for the challenge. At least, he believes he’s up for it until baby Micah is stolen right out from under his nose. Now Johnny has to keep it together and get that sweet little boy home safe before his dreams of having a family vanish too.

NO COMMENT? (Look in your Spam)

A Little Help From My Friends…

Dear friends and fellow bloggers,

You know me, right? I’m a prolific commenter, most of the time. I usually have an opinion, and I love hanging around blogs. We’re all friends here in the blogosphere.

Ham turned to Spam!

However. At this time, I’ve been relegated to Spam. Yup, everything I might try to say to you on your lovely WordPress blogs currently most likely ends up in your Spam folder. Why?

WordPress uses something called Akismet to protect our blogs from Spam. Occasionally, Akismet tightens its criteria or logarithms or whatever it is they use, and legitimate, innocent bloggers such as myself end up on a blacklist. Completely randomly. Completely without reason. For I’m not Spam, right? Not fair, uh-huh, but that’s what happens.

How did I find out about this? Well, let’s say I spent time yesterday leaving comments on people’s blogs, as is my wont, and they didn’t appear. The blog would say, “posting comment” and then… nothing. No “your comment is awaiting moderation”, just nothing. This got me thinking and Googling, and hey presto, there it was, the hypothesis. Am I on a blacklist of some kind? Does WordPress think I’m Spam?? I Facebooked with one of the bloggers and she duly found me in her Spam folder (and restored my comment: thanks!). Hypothesis confirmed; panic stations!

I’ve contacted WordPress, and they’ve been very helpful but there’s not much they can do. I’ve contacted Akismet but their contact form is like a big, black hole and I don’t even know if my message got through.

No Way Out?

Meanwhile I’ve been advised conflicting things. Some say, hold off on the commenting altogether for a  while. Others say, comment and ask the blog owners to retrieve your message from Spam and approve it. Apparently, that action sends a message of a ‘false positive’ to Akismet which will eventually (in a few days? weeks? months?) prompt Akismet to take me off the blacklist. (Have I mentioned that I hate being on any kind of blacklist? I’m deeply distraught!).

I’m not alone in this. Check out this post, for example (or try Googling the phenomenon, but this link is faster, LOL):

http://dukeo.com/how-to-get-off-akismets-blacklist/

Instructive, huh? So where do I go from here?

Hope Against Hope

Well. I’ll comment a little less, perhaps, but I will remain your active friend!

Perhaps you could check your Spam folder every once in a while to see if I’m languishing in there. Perhaps, if you find me, you might mark my comments as THIS IS NOT SPAM and approve them to restore them to your blog. I would really, really love that.

Hopefully, one day I’ll become a happy, one-click-and-my-comment-shows blogger again. In the interim… don’t forget to check your Spam folder every once in a while, just in case. Thank you all for your support!

🙂

Is This Love

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Happy Monday, one and all! I hope you had a fantastic weekend. I’m in the throes of proofing Sophie’s Encore and this has put me in the mood for a classic song. I have posted this band before but I couldn’t resist today’s choice. Especially as this is an important and highly relevant question (ah… but who’s asking it??? You’ll have to wait to find out, although not for very long!)!

So. Is This Love? What do you think?

***STOP PRESS!!! BREAKING NEWS!!!***

Music Monday will take a break for a week because… *DRUMROLL* … it’s the cover reveal for Sophie’s Encore next Monday!!! Hope to see you all here to go ooooh and aaaah!!!!!

Winning a Race and Gaining a Sunshine Award ~ My Lucky Week!

Happy Friday! I’ve had a bit of a lucky week this week, so you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be playing the lottery tonight, LOL. Here’s what happened.

Last Saturday, I completely unexpectedly entered the local model-boat-race… and won (nearly). Photos below!

On Monday, I was awarded the Sunshine Award by my rocking friend, Karen Soutar ~ thank you, Karen, and please find my SUNSHINE POST response and nominations below!

Last but not least, I also won tickets to the Waddington Airshow in a competition at Siren 107.3 FM. This, for the woman who never wins anything! You can see why I simply have to play the lottery tonight…although you might argue I’ve had my lucky three!

Winning the Boat Race

One of my greatest regrets about my time at Oxford University is not having joined the College Rowing team. I had two good reasons, though. One, I can’t swim, so rowing isn’t an obvious pastime for me. And two, I really struggle to get up at 5 a.m.. But as a result, I missed out on all the boat racing fun.

I made up for it last Saturday! Dunholme, a village nearby our home, hosts a fabulous village fete every year, and as part of the fete, they stage a boat race on the little river running through the church yard. Anyone is welcome to construct a boat out of any kind of materials and race it, for a small fee.

Needless to say, the kids constructed massive entries featuring several milk bottles, cereal boxes, egg boxes and what have you. Their boats did well, but they didn’t win.

I didn’t have an entry. I had no intention of entering. But observing the winning boats, I tried to explain to the kids where their constructions had gone wrong and was met with incredulous stares.

“What do you mean, Mummy, a bottle with a sail would have done better?”

Well, there’s no better way to teach than to show. Right? So in between races, I commandeered a soft drinks bottle (empty), four lolly sticks (sans lollies), and one random wrapper. I made two holes in the bottle, stuck the lolly sticks in (two per hole) and fashioned my sail. At the last minute, I remembered to add a few little stones for ballast to ensure my boat would stay upright.

The second-place-winning entry. Yes, I know it's not in the water. I hadn't taken my camera! This wasn't planned!!

The second-place-winning entry.
Yes, I know it’s not in the water. I hadn’t taken my camera! This wasn’t planned!!

I paid my 50p, I entered and….

 second place

I came second place! (I would have come first but there was an interference…anyway, water under the bridge!). I’m mighty thrilled, and I got a mug to prove it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My offspring were incredulous, but gleeful on my behalf. Will they remember this lesson for next year, I wonder?

The Sunshine Award

It’s been a while since I’ve last been able to accept an award nomination. Here’s a big, heartfelt Thank You to all you lovely bloggers who bore with me when I had to pass on your lovely, kind and gracious nominations over the past few months owing to time constraints, deadlines and other calamities. You know who you are ~ and you know I love you!

However, on this occasion, I had a clear week and I thought it was time to have a bit of fun again!

Therefore, a huge thank you goes to the awesome Karen Soutar for nominating me for the Sunshine Award. A fellow rock lover, Karen and I were introduced on Twitter by the lovely Julie Valerie, and we’ve been rocking and chatting together ever since. We have many things in common, but there’s one crucial difference… which you’ll find imminently.

sunshine-award21

To accept the award, I have to tell you ten random things about me, and pass the award on to ten fellow bloggers. Here goes!

1. I don’t drive. Weird, but there you have it. I’ve blogged about this some other time, but the upshot is, I don’t drive. Karen, on the other hand, is a driving instructor! So if I do ever get overcome by the urge to pick the steering wheel  up again, I know who to turn to for refresher lessons.

2. I’ve not watched a whole episode of Star Trek since I was a child. And then, I believed quite firmly that all the cast were wearing pyjamas because Captain Kirk’s uniform looked exactly like my Dad’s sleepwear.

3. I can’t swim. Well, not really. I do a hapless little backstroke that keeps me above water, just.

4. I once hitch-hiked across Germany to see a rock band I desperately wanted to see despite having no tickets, or no accommodation at the other end. When my then-boyfriend realized that I was serious about going after this band, he joined me on my trip, much to his mother’s distress. I know, let’s not go there. We got to see the band alright. Sadly, the story doesn’t continue at all like Sophie’s story does, so we’d better draw a veil over this.

5. I’m a sucker for seafood. Everything but squid, eek, no thank you.

6. My favourite fruit is a strawberry.

7. I invented orange-and-cranberry cocktails. I swear I did. I was mixing orange juice with cranberry juice before that notion ever made it into public consciousness.

8. I don’t own any tech gadgets beyond a basic mobile phone and a laptop. No iPad, smartphone, tablet, iPod or other device in my house. (Yet)

Okay nominees, how it works:

Use the award logo in this post. Link to the person who nominated you (hey, that’s me! Woo hoo!). Write ten pieces of information about yourself. Nominate ten fellow bloggers who positively and creatively inspire others in the blogsphere. Leave a comment on the nominees’ blogs to tell them about the award. Have fun!

PS ~ if you’re too busy for this award, or if you can’t accept it right now… don’t worry. It’s only a bit of fun, and I won’t mind if you have to pass. Honest! 🙂

Wishing you all a great weekend. Have you ever experienced ‘lucky spates’ like this one? And do small mercies tickle you pink, too?
