Add your voice to my Thunderclap for a real **bang**!

Have you heard of Thunderclap? By which I mean not the natural phenomenon nor the band, but the social media variety? The one that allows you to bring together 100s of supporters all at the same time to hold a virtual loudhailer to a message you want to share on Twitter or Facebook?

Well, it’s awesome. It really is. The possibilities are mind-blowing!

Here’s the gen.

Thunderclap is a new ‘crowd-speaking’ platform that allows you to donate a Tweet or Facebook message to an artist’s project… like for example a book launch. Like, for example, my upcoming launch of Fairy Tale in New York. If you pledge, the message is let loose on social media all at the same time. It’s completely safe, it’s not spam, and it will automatically post just one message on your behalf, just once. Like, for example, this one I made for Fairy Tale in New York.

Thunderclap 2

 I got lift off!

For a Thunderclap to go ahead, you need a minimum of 100 supporters. And I’m ecstatically pleased to report that my Thunderclap campaign for Fairy Tale in New York has lift off!

Thunderclap 1

If you want to add your support, it only takes 5 seconds to join. Really. Honestly! Try me! Here’s how:

1.  Visit this link. https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/17561-fairy-tale-in-new-york

2. If you are prompted for a sign in, you can do so with your Twitter or Facebook ID

3. Click on ‘support with Twitter’ or ‘Support with Facebook.

4. Confirm by clicking ‘Add my support’.

And that’s it! If you feel like it, you can even tweet about this to get more people involved. Let’s launch my Christmas Fairy Tale with a real bang next week. 🙂

Thank you!

CentreStage Presents: New from @AuthorDanObrien ~ Mobsters, Monsters & Nazis

CS_Logo

Welcome to CentreStage! Featuring today: Dan O’Brien.

When an email from the highly talented Dan O’Brien pinged into my inbox, I opened it with some considerable  excitement. It announced Dan O’Brien’s latest project: Mobsters, Monsters & Nazis, which is  a collaboration between Dan O’Brien and Steve Ferchaud. Steve, of course, illustrated Conspirators of the Lost Sock Army and the Loose Change Collection Agency. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Dan is in the process of publishing something rather different…something visual, beautifully illustrated, with an intriguing storyline and an attention-grabbing title.

How could I not take part in the promo blitz for this new project? So I give you today:

Mobsters, Monsters & Nazis

DanOBrien1

Author Dan O’Brien has teamed up with artist Steve Ferchaud for a one-of-a-kind reading experience that will span six short books. Blending noir, hardboiled detective stories, and pulp comics, “Mobsters, Monsters & Nazis” follows private investigator Derrick Diamond as he searches for an elusive object: a strange device that the Nazis need for their nefarious experiments. Aided by Ava Harpy, a lounge singer at the Yellow Monarch, they dive deep into the underbelly of the city, uncovering a sordid plot that is much larger than they could have possibly imagined.

Now, it might not be a time travel highlander romance, but it is the first in a series of kindle ebooks that might have a time traveler in them (or maybe not). Dan can promise it’s a modern pulp story with the usual suspects of pulp heroes and villains. It also manages to satisfy all those readers who enjoy a little cthulhu mythos in the mix.

If you love illustrated works, pulp comics, and a little bit of Lovecraft in your stories, then what are you waiting for?

A Sneak Peek…

Today I’m taking part in the reveal of the sketches for some of the interior illustrations (which will be black and white) of the first issue. It will be released as six issues (eBooks) starting on Halloween. It is influenced by film noir, pulp comics, and an abiding love of Lovecraft. And! *Newsflash* It is already available for pre-order, and Dan will be promoting it heavily starting in the month of October. He would love to hear what you think of it so far! (And so would I!)

Leave Dan a comment right here, and visit him at http://thedanobrienproject.blogspot.com/
or on Twitter, @AuthorDanOBrien

So let’s hear it for Mobsters, Monsters & Nazis: What do you make of the sneak peek and the idea?

Huge thanks to Dan for sharing, and good luck with the launch!!

Encounter! A paranormal short story (with no rock stars)

Peter doesn’t believe in Elaine’s strange visions, but he doesn’t have the heart to defy them either. And on this occasion, his indulgence turns out to be a blessing…

Encounter

‘That woman is freaking me out. She’s been staring at me the whole evening.’ Elaine nudged her husband gently and motioned for him to take a surreptitious look.

‘Who?’ Peter strained to see.

‘That old woman at the table back there. Grey hair, ethnic scarf, fake fur bolero…’ Elaine craned her neck but stopped herself from pointing. They were in a Michelin-starred restaurant after all.

Peter dropped his napkin and took a good look around while he bent to retrieve it. Elaine suppressed a giggle at the obvious ploy. She felt slightly light-headed after their delightful meal, and for the first time since the baby was born, she had allowed herself to drink not one but two glasses of wine.

‘Nope. I don’t know who you’re talking about.’

‘Peter, she’s right behind you. She’s still…’

Elaine took a double take. ‘She’s gone. How weird. I swear she was looking at me. She had the most unusual blue eyes.’

Peter half turned again, emboldened now that he was unlikely to cause offense by staring. ‘Well, whoever she was, she’s not there.’

‘Strange.’

‘Quit worrying. You always see omens in the most random of places.’ He took her hand and smiled. ‘Have you enjoyed our evening out so far?’

Elaine giggled softly. ‘It’s been lovely. I feel like we’re on a first date after all this time.’

‘Me too. I hope the theatre is just as good.’

‘Bound to be. “We Will Rock You” has been getting great reviews. In fact… it’s nearly time to go. I just need to pop to the ladies’.’

Elaine rose, but Peter tugged at her arm. ‘I love you, sweetie.’

‘I love you too.’ She blew him a gentle kiss as she swayed her way between the tables. It was wonderfully liberating to have a night out. She had rung the babysitter early on in the evening, and everything was just fine and dandy. No doubt the show would be great, and then they would be home all too soon.

‘Better enjoy it,’ Elaine whispered to herself as she pushed open the door to the ladies’ room. ‘Who knows when we’ll next get the chance.’

‘Better go home.’

The soft but raspy voice greeted her as soon as the door closed behind her, and Elaine gave a start. There she was, the old lady with the piercing eyes. She had wound her colourful scarf tightly around her neck and stared a challenge at Elaine.

‘Who are you?’

‘Doesn’t matter who I am. I’m telling you to go home.’

‘Why? What’s it to you?’

Despite her air of insouciance, Elaine felt chilled to the bone. Peter was right. She did believe in omens and strange appearances, and this was definitely one of them. But still, her husband’s more pragmatic nature had rubbed off on her.

‘You’re not real. I’m dreaming you. My husband couldn’t see you.’

The woman laughed. ‘I’m as real as your heartbeat. I’m as real as your deepest fears. And I am telling you, go home. Now.’ She swept majestically past Elaine, tapping her lightly on the arm as she went, and Elaine recoiled from the unexpected heat of her touch. The door closed and Elaine was alone. She breathed deeply.

Fear. The woman had mentioned fear, and there was lots of it in Elaine’s heart. Right now, she was in the grip of the most powerful premonition. She knew that Peter wouldn’t believe her, but she would have to obey the lady’s command and go home.

Elaine rushed out of the restroom, up the stairs and back into the restaurant, nearly colliding with a waiter. There was no sign of the woman, but Peter looked at her in alarm.

‘Elaine. Darling! You look like you’ve seen a ghost.’

‘That woman… the old lady. Did you see her? She must have come past here.’

‘Sweetheart, nobody’s come up the stairs but you and the nearly unfortunate waiter. Are you all right?’

‘Peter, please don’t be cross with me, but I want to go home. I’ve got the most awful feeling…’

‘Did you have one of your visions again? You know they don’t mean anything—’

‘No. Yes!’ Elaine didn’t let her husband finish. ‘Trust me. I know something’s wrong. She said to go home and… Look, please. If everything’s okay, we can still catch the show, and I promise I’ll never, ever believe in omens ever again. Ever. But please… I’m scared.’

Peter looked at his wife of ten years for a long, long time. He knew her superstitions. He understood that their baby daughter was the most precious thing in her life, having taken years to conceive. Real fear was radiating from Elaine’s every pore. Even though he believed strongly that giving in to her anxieties would make them worse in the long run, he didn’t have it in his heart to deny her request.

‘Okay. Let’s go.’ He forced a smile that didn’t quite hide his disappointment at having his evening cut short.

‘Thank you. I promise, if this is a wild goose chase, I’ll make it up to you.’ Elaine nearly wept with relief.

Peter settled the bill and they claimed their car. The drive home was silent and tense. Elaine’s mouth was dry, and her heart beat high in her throat. If anything had happened…

She jumped out of the car before Peter had even engaged the handbrake. In her great haste, she nearly tripped on the garden path, and her hands were shaking so badly that she couldn’t undo the front lock. Peter caught up with her and gently took the keys out of her hands. Together, they entered their home.

The hallway was dark, and there was no sound. The baby had to be asleep. As for the sitter, Elaine had thought that Dora would be watching telly, but the lounge was also dark and deserted.

‘I’ll check on Jemmy,’ Elaine whispered, already halfway up the stairs. ‘You check on Dora.’

Elaine tiptoed towards the nursery but was distracted by soft moaning from the other side of the landing. Uncertain where to turn first, she sneaked a quick look at her sleeping daughter before venturing into the bathroom, where the moaning was growing more urgent.

‘Oh my gosh, Dora!’ Elaine switched the light on and knelt by the babysitter, who was curled up on the floor. She was drenched in sweat, very pale, and hot to the touch.

‘Tummy…ache…’ Dora whispered between ragged breaths. ‘Tried to ring…but…couldn’t… get you.’

‘You need a doctor,’ Elaine diagnosed. ‘I’ll be right back.’

She rushed down the stairs to call an ambulance, switching on more lights as she did so. ‘Peter,’ she whispered urgently. ‘Peter, where are you? Dora’s been taken ill!’

Peter emerged from the kitchen. Shock was written all over his face. ‘Elaine, I’m so sorry. I’ll never doubt you again.’

‘It’s okay,’ Elaine soothed. ‘I’m sure she’ll be fine. But she does need a doctor. I’m calling an ambulance.’

Peter swallowed hard. ‘Okay. But that’s not what I mean.’

‘Why? What? Peter, what’s the matter?’

By way of response, Peter pushed the kitchen door open wide. The acrid smell of burned plastic assaulted Elaine’s nostrils, and she struggled to comprehend the scene. Her hob was a black, sooty mess covered in what looked like their erstwhile fire blanket.

‘Dora must have been taken ill while she was heating some soup. Looks like she never came back downstairs.’ Peter’s voice was hoarse with the aftershock of finding a fire in his kitchen. ‘If we’d come back even ten minutes later, the whole house would have been ablaze. I only just managed to put it out.’

‘Oh my God.’

‘Oh my God, indeed.’ Peter wrapped his arms around his shaking wife. ‘But we’re here. And everything’s fine. Now we must call an ambulance for Dora. And thank goodness for your strange encounter.’

‘Better go home,’ Elaine repeated the lady’s words. ‘Thank you, whoever you are.’

~~~
And there you have it. Sometimes I like to try my hand at writing something entirely different. Incidentally, this story draws on a real experience. I did have a spooky encounter just like this. Only this was years ago, in a humble ice cream parlour in Germany, I wasn’t married, I didn’t rush home to the baby I didn’t have, and there was no fire. But it was very, very strange… Strange enough to compel me to write a short story around it.
So what do make of Encounter?
Uncovering the magic: Fairy Tale in New York #Christmas #Romance #Rock
New York. A restaurant near Park Avenue. It’s early evening, and dusk is falling. So is the snow. Jude and Carrie are merely killing time while they wait for their return flight to London. They don’t know yet that their life will never be the same…
Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00065]
‘Um.’ Carrie leaned forward and dropped her voice to a whisper. ‘You know that scene in Pretty Woman? In the bar? I’ve always wanted to try that out.’
Jude burst out laughing, startling Maya. ‘Sorry, babycakes, I didn’t mean to frighten you,’ he cooed and scooped her onto his lap. ‘Your mummy is propositioning me in the most outrageous manner, you know. Quite scandalous.’
‘Shush,’ Carrie hissed. ‘What if she understands you?’
‘She won’t,’ Jude replied calmly. ‘How could she?’
‘You know what they say about not talking to your baby in a baby voice…’
‘Well, I’m right on track, aren’t I?’ Jude replied mischievously. ‘As for your proposition…well, I must say… you’re on. I suppose we’d better get this young lady tucked up first, don’t you?’
Carrie chuckled. ‘Are we naughty, or what?’
‘Not naughty,’ Jude corrected gently. ‘Just in love. Let’s go.’
He stepped up to the counter to pay at the till while Carrie put Maya back into her coat and hat. The little girl was droopy and tired and glared at Carrie around a thumb plugged firmly into her mouth. Carrie kissed her nose and tugged her hat down a little further. ‘Nearly time for your bath and bed,’ she told her daughter. ‘It’s not far to the hotel.’
Jude lifted Maya into her sling and fastened it securely. He gave a quick nod towards the window. ‘Have you noticed? It’s snowing.’
‘Really?’ Carrie squealed and pressed her nose to the window like a small child. ‘Omigod, so it is! Could this day end any more perfect?’
‘I don’t know about perfect,’ Jude grumbled. ‘Let’s hope it’s a temporary flurry.’
‘Oh, I’m sure it will be,’ Carrie mused. ‘You know me and snow. It never snows where I am. And if it does, it doesn’t stick. But it’s so romantic. Just think, we could light some candles and sit at the piano together and watch the snow fall onto Park Avenue…maybe have a glass of vino…’
‘Is that before or after we try that scene from Pretty Woman?’
‘You and your one-track mind.’ Carrie pretended to pout and threw a glove at Jude.
‘Hey, that’s not fair!’ Jude caught the glove and laughed. ‘You suggested it.’
‘That was before!’
‘Before what?’
‘Before it snowed!’
Jude shook with laughter all over. ‘How does that change anything?’
‘Well, you know.’ Carrie wrapped her scarf around her neck and donned her own woolly hat. ‘I never get to sit in a suite in a glamorous hotel and watch the snow fall, so that’s pretty special, don’t you see? I’ve got to enjoy this moment.’
‘And so you shall. Just as soon as we’ve both enjoyed something else.’
‘Tsk. Honestly. Anyone would think you’re a rock star, the way you carry on.’
Can’t you just picture the scene? Don’t you just wish you could be there?
Well, I can’t quite magic you there, but I can invite you to ride along with Carrie and Jude’s incredible rollercoaster of magical events in my latest masterpiece, Fairy Tale in New York.
Fairy Tale in New York
When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet.
No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. And now, a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya are stuck far from home.
Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.
How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.
Rock on!
A completely new look for the lovely @SherylBrowne’s fabulous books!
It’s my extraordinary pleasure today to welcome back to my blog the one and only Sheryl Browne. As you’re about to see, Sheryl’s a fantastic (and prolific!) author. And she’s also a wonderful friend and roomie unbelievably tolerant of other people’s (read: my) insomniac and slightly inebriated foibles. She’s a fabulous listener, a great cheerer-onner, and an all-round wonderful person. So when I discovered that all of her book covers had a bit of a stunning makeover, I invited Sheryl to come over here and do a bit of shouting. She’s too modest, you see, Sheryl is. She doesn’t like shouting about herself. But I got her, and here she is… give up for
Sheryl Browne!
Hi Nicky! Thank you for inviting me onto your beautiful, rocking blog and huge CONGRATULATIONS on the release of your delicious new book, Fallen for Rock! I tell you what, looking at that gorgeous cover, I could.
Talking of covers, Nicky has kindly allowed me to take up blog space and show off my very own re-vamped covers from Safkhet Publishing. Without further ado then, here we go … ta-dah!
  cover spread jpg
So, what am I all about? I think the recently released Birmingham City University Anthology, I am therefore I Write (in which I’m proud to say a first scene from my play, Life Class, was published), sums me up. I think Nicky would concur that the writer’s life is a frenetic one, juggling many humungous balls. Occasionally, we drop one and get squished. But we always come back fighting, because to an author, writing is simply as important as breathing. It might not buy us a holiday home in the Bahamas, or even Bognor, but it’s our life blood. We simply wouldn’t know how to be without it. A little bit madder, possibly, which brings me to one of my books, A Little Bit of Madness, from which my stage-play, Life Class, was written. The first scenes, excitingly, have already been work-shopped on stage at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and, I have to say, I was rather gobsmacked when I realised my leading man was Dan Hagley, who plays Darrell Makepeace in BBC Radio 4’s, The Archers. My claim to fame! He was fabulous. I can’t thank him enough for his inspirational performance.
Generally, my aim is to bring readers poignant modern fiction. Taking a slight detour from my usual humorous, stories, my latest release is a thriller, which, quoting a fabulous review from Crime Fiction Lover “is well on the romantic spectrum of crime fiction”. No, I haven’t changed genres. My attempt is still to write edgy, humorous, heart-wrenching fiction for people’s enjoyment. I’m more exploring – as ever – the fragility of love, life and relationships. My books will always tend to turn around the family unit, looking at family dynamics and the tenuous bonds that hold people together, usually having a strong, but flawed, male lead. I think The Edge of Sanity, having at its heart a family torn apart by tragedy, does fall into that category.
And that’s enough about me! I leave you with my taglines, which might give you a flavour of the content behind the covers and also (because I couldn’t resist) a little peek at my heroes from Learning to Love and Warrant for Love. A girl has to dream.
Proudly announcing… my first Vlog! (and the character names for my next novel)
Hi!
I know. I know. I only just published a book last week Monday, and the dust hasn’t even settled yet. But time doesn’t stand still, there’s no rest for the wicked, a rolling stone gathers no moss, and the only way is onwards and upwards. Or something like that.
This weekend, I drafted the plan for my next full-length novel destined for release in the Spring of 2015 (this is after I’ve brought you a Christmas novella, of course). The working title is SEVEN YEARS… (and then something else, but I’ll keep that as a surprise). I decided it would be good fun to let you all, my friends and readers, pick some names. And then I thought I’d try a Vlog. I’ve never done one of those before. So here goes–two firsts in one post!
What do you think?
