The Wind Weeps… with Anneli Purchase

CentreStage with Anneli Purchase!

CS_Logo

Welcome to CentreStage! I’m absolutely delighted to turn the floor over to my fabulous Canadian friend Anneli Purchase. For those of you who might not know her, Anneli is the author of three moving and captivating novels. When she’s not writing, she’s often busy taking photos and sharing them via her blog in wonderfully inspiring posts. She’s also a tremendous supporter of fellow authors and great fun to hang out with on the social networks. While she lives in Canada, she had a German mother, and we quite often compare memories of German-inspired childhood traditions concerning Easter, Christmas and other assorted holidays.  Today, she’s come to showcase her debut novel, The Wind Weeps. Take it away, Anneli!

The Wind Weeps

The setting for my novel The Wind Weeps is the west coast of British Columbia. The situation that develops in this story is fiction and a bit bizarre, but it is one that, with variations, has actually taken place more than once on this coast. If you want adventure and suspense, along with a good love story, maybe this is the book for you.

Why did I choose this title?

Have you ever heard high winds roaring through the trees in a windstorm? On the coast of British Columbia what isn’t rock is trees. When the southeast winds scream across the water and then, making landfall, get hung up in the tall firs and cedars, the whooshing of the wind alternates between howling and whining. Unsettling sounds, even when you have your life in order, but when you wish you were elsewhere and have absolutely no escape, the wind almost begs you to join it in its weeping.

My Main Characters

Andrea is a happy young woman who leaves her boring city job back east and comes out west for a life of adventure. She is determined to learn to get by on her own in a world that is much more raw than the sheltered city life she left behind.

She is a head-turner. Men are attracted to her good looks, but she is apparently oblivious to the effect she has on them.

Jim ~ Every woman’s Mr. Right, he is handsome, humble, capable, fun to be with, and sexy without trying to be.

Robert ~ Strong, tall, handsome, with a magnetic personality…and secrets he keeps hidden.

The Story

When she finds a job on the wharf in a small west coast town, she has her choice of men, but naively, she gets caught up in too much of a good thing. There’s a song by Glenn Frey that was made just for her.

“Are you gonna stay with the one who loves you
Or are you goin’ back to the one you love?
Someone’s gonna cry when they know they’ve lost you
Someone’s gonna thank the stars above”

Poor Andrea makes the wrong choice and pays the price. When she ends up in a desperate situation, she often hears the wind and wants to weep with it.

But wait, she’s made of stronger stuff than that. She is determined to find a way out. As we follow Andrea in her dilemma, we travel the coast and experience it as if we were in the boat with her, in the forest with her, in the remote towns with her, in a life of hell with her, hanging onto a sliver of hope.

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

It’s my enormous pleasure to introduce you to a new friend I recently made in a fabulous Facebook group. Give it up for the one and only Cat Lavoie! Cat has recently released her new novel, Zoey & the Moment of Zen. She’s sharing with us today the blurb and… *Nicky cheers very loudly indeed* Zoey’s playlist!! Read and be ready to be wowed!

Zoey & the Moment of Zen

zoey and the moment of zen (2)

When coffee shop owner Zoey Everwood takes her obsession with ex-boyfriend Braden too far, everyone—except Zoey—is convinced a bit of fun in the sun at the Moment of Zen Wellness Resort will help her get over him once and for all.

But Zoey’s relaxing vacation turns out to be anything but peaceful when she meets Shane Lawson, a resort guest who bears a striking resemblance to Braden. And things get even more complicated when the resort’s owner starts spilling secrets about Zoey’s aunt Nessa, the woman who raised her. Add a snarky Wellness Coordinator and Nate Holmes—Shane’s grumpy friend—to the mix, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect tropical storm.

When Zoey comes back home with a new husband instead of tacky souvenirs, she must convince everyone she hasn’t completely lost her mind. As Zoey and Shane struggle to keep the magic alive outside the resort, Zoey discovers that she isn’t the only one having trouble letting go of the past. And when Nate drops a bombshell that changes everything, Zoey must decide if the old saying is true—what happens at the Moment of Zen stays at the Moment of Zen.

ZOEY’S PLAYLIST: MUSICAL Q&A WITH ZOEY EVERWOOD

Song that reminds you of someone from your past: “Un-break My Heart” by Toni Braxton. Whenever I hear it, I think about my ex, Braden.

Song you sing at the top of your lungs when no one is around:  “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga. I usually sing (and dance!) along to it when I’m closing up the coffee shop at the end of the day. Thank goodness the customers don’t see my horrible dance moves because we’d probably go out of business really fast!

Song that reminds you of your childhood: My aunt Nessa has developed a love of Mozart and Beethoven in the last few years but, growing up, it was more classic rock than classical music. Whenever I hear “More Than a Feeling” by Boston or “Roxanne” by The Police, I remember sitting in the passenger’s seat of her car and singing along with her.

Favourite karaoke song: “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher. But I’ll only sing it if my best friend Dar is on stage with me… and if I’ve had a few cocktails.

Song you know every single word to: Easy. “You Were Meant For Me” by Jewel. I know it by heart—I could sing it right now if you want… No? Okay.

Song that would play in the movie of your life:  “She Works Hard for the Money” by Donna Summer would play in the opening credits over a montage of me working in the coffee shop.

Best song to cry to: “Someone Like You” by Adele. Can anyone listen to that song without tearing up?

Wow. Love love LOVE this playlist, and what a great way to introduce a character. Thanks for sharing, Zoey! X 🙂

About Cat Lavoie
cat lavoie (2)

Cat Lavoie was born in the small town of Jonquière in Québec, Canada. At the age of nineteen, she packed up her things (mostly books) and moved to the big city of Montreal where she currently lives with her tempestuous cat Abbie–who is both adorable and quite possibly evil.

An incurable Anglophile since her university days where she studied English Literature, she can often be found daydreaming about her next trip to London. Since she’s an expert at the art of procrastination, Cat is easily distracted by cooking and home improvement shows–even though she’s not particularly good at either.

Cat grew up watching soap operas and legal dramas and–had she not decided to be a claims analyst by day and write chick lit by night–she would have probably become a designer suit-wearing lawyer. Or a character on All My Children (which is what she really wanted to be when she was twelve).

Cat is not sure whether she’s a geek or a nerd–and is afraid she might be both. Cat blogs about the writing life and posts adorable pictures of Abbie over at the Catenabi Chronicles. Come say hello at: http://www.CatLavoie.com and follow @Catenabi on Twitter.

AWESOME!

Huge congratulations on your launch, Cat, and thanks for sharing these fabulous songs. I’m all a-rocking here! 🙂

Folks ~ give Zoey, her playlist, and her moment of Zen a warm welcome and let’s hear your thoughts!

Forever Fredless! CentreStage with Suzy Turner / @Suzy_Turner

Welcome to CentreStage!

Give it up for a really special guest today… the one and only Suzy Turner and her latest Chick Lit delight, Forever Fredless!

Suzy is a woman of many talents. We met on Twitter (or was it Facebook?) and have been chatting ever since. Suzy simply loves networking, and you can usually find her blogging and promoting authors other than herself… to the exclusion of herself! Yup! So when I got an email saying, “HELP! In all this blogging, I completely forgot to think about promoting Forever Fredless”… well, what could I do but say, come on round and the stage is yours? So without further ado, take it away, Suzy!

Forever Fredless ~ The Blurb!

Kate Robinson has spent the past two decades yearning to find her soul mate, the boy she found and then lost during a family holiday.

Shortly after her twenty-eighth birthday, however, she inherits a fortune from an old family friend and becomes something of an overnight celebrity. Can her new-found fame lead her to him after all this time?

EXCERPT

Thank God for anti-perspirant, I thought as I sat on the couch and waited for the countdown to begin. I clutched at my hands until they were white and looked across at the two people sitting opposite, both completely at ease in front of the cameras.

Five, four, three, two, one…

‘Welcome back to this morning’s edition of Good Morning GB,’ announced Ireland Rothschild, the blonde-haired, blue eyed darling of morning TV.

‘I’m here with Fergus O’Reilly and we’ve a special guest with us this morning. None other than Britain’s love-struck multi-millionaire, Kate Robinson. ‘Welcome, Kate,’ she said with a dazzling smile aimed more towards the camera than at me.

As my cheeks began to heat up, I was so grateful to the make-up artist, who had insisted on caking on the foundation before the show had started. In fact, I had so much make-up on that I was hoping once I’d removed it, nobody would recognise me when I headed to the airport in my now rather stupidly chosen car. I couldn’t exactly blend in driving a pink Mini could I?

‘Good morning,’ I whispered shyly.

Fergus grinned back at me, tilting his head as if he was about to speak to a child. ‘Now, tell us, Kate dear, how does it feel to never have to worry about money ever again?’ he asked, his toothpaste advert  teeth twinkling beneath the heat of the studio lights.

‘Erm, well, I guess it’s… erm, kind of… erm,’ I felt so bloody stupid. Great time for my brain to stop working. ‘I – erm. Great,’ I nodded. ‘Great, really great.’ Idiot.

Ireland glanced across at her grey-haired colleague and pouted before nodding. ‘Tell us how you knew this man. This,’ she glanced down at the iPad on her lap and continued, ‘Samuel?’

I cleared my throat and lifted my head, feeling like my brain was back in action. ‘He was a very good friend of the family, some years ago,’ I answered.

‘Just a friend? Why did he leave you all his money and his property?’ asked Fergus.

‘He didn’t have any family and I guess you could say that my mother and I were the closest he ever had to a family.’

‘Isn’t that lovely?’ pouted Ireland. ‘You certainly are a lucky woman. But what about your mother? Didn’t she receive any of his inheritance?’

‘No,’ I said before swallowing hard. ‘My mother lives a rather… nomadic lifestyle, in Africa. She doesn’t want any of it. All she asked of me was to donate a sum to charity which, of course, I have done.’

‘She lives in Africa? A nomadic lifestyle? That sounds intriguing. Perhaps we should interview her one of these days,’ laughed Ireland and Fergus together.

‘Have you splashed out on anything since receiving your inheritance back in June?’ they asked, leaning forward eagerly awaiting my answer.

‘Yes I have actually. I bought a car and a new house.’

‘Well good for you, Kate. But now, most of us are curious about this boy you lost. Tell us about him?’

Oh no. Why did I agree to this?

Taking a deep breath, I knew I had no choice. Several articles had been printed since the one in Liberty; everyone wanted to know more and nobody was going to leave me alone until I told them everything.

‘He was just a boy who I had a connection with when I was much, much younger. It was at Skegness. At an afternoon disco for kids. I was dancing and I felt someone touch my back and when I turned around there he was.  The most beautiful boy I’d ever seen,’ I said, stopping and smiling as I reminisced. ‘It was one of the happiest memories of my life.’

Sighing, I continued, ‘We just looked at each other and it was like everything else just disappeared into the background. We stood staring, for what seemed like ages. I could barely move. And then, almost as soon as it had begun, my dad appeared and took me away. I couldn’t do anything as we walked to the car. I looked around for the boy but he was gone. And then, just as we were driving away, I turned around in my seat and there he was. He had a daffodil in his hand. I always assumed he’d gone to pick it for me, but that’s just a childish fantasy, I guess. The whole thing is probably nothing but a childish fantasy, really.’

Ireland was very carefully dabbing at her eyes with a tissue, pretending to be moved, while Fergus smiled sadly.

‘What a beautiful story, Kate. I don’t believe for one second that this is a childish fantasy. It’s romantic and beautiful,’ Ireland said.

‘Now, tell us, Kate. Why did you call him Fred?’ asked Fergus.

Smiling, I explained about the Right Said Fred song, just as the music began in the background.

‘What a wonderful tale. Thank you, Kate, for joining us today. It’s been a pleasure having you with us to share your story,’ said Fergus.

‘Thank you,’ I whispered before the camera moved back to Ireland as she straightened her skirt and looked alluring. ‘Do you remember this moment in time?’ she asked. ‘Are you the elusive Fred? We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us at…’

Before I could hear anything else, I was ushered off the couch and back behind the scenes where Jo stood, waiting patiently for me, with open arms.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: CentreStage with Jennifer M. Eaton

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

Today it’s my great pleasure to welcome the one and only Jennifer M. Eaten as she celebrates the release of her latest masterpiece, The First Day of  the New Tomorrow. Take it away, Jen!

The First Day of the New Tomorrow medium 333x500

With Great Power….

“With great power comes great responsibility.”**  It’s one of the most famous movie quotes of all time.  Thanks Uncle Ben!  Great words of wisdom. (From the first “Spiderman” movie, 2002)

Did you now that Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman never actually wrote that?  Well, he did, and he didn’t.  The original comic actually read: “With great power must also come great responsibility”.**

Did you know though, that this phrase was common far before Stan Lee? (I’ll give Stan credit for making it famous, though.  Kudos!)

You can trace this back to Voltaire.  Yep, that far back.  In 1817, a member of UK parliament actually said that the phrase had become cliché.

Cliché?  Maybe that’s because it can be applied to so many things, and it’s great advice, isn’t it?

So good, in fact, that you can trace the quote all the way back to the bible, so Voltaire wasn’t all that original either:

“From the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked” (NIV**)

In my story The First Day of the New Tomorrow teenage Maya is forced to meet this statement head on. Let’s watch as a teenager faces her destiny…

Excerpt from “The First Day of the New Tomorrow”

“I have a bad feeling you don’t want to talk about college.”

A smile touched his lips. “No. I’ve never even been to college myself.”

Maya’s unease became a bat and struck her into panic mode. She jumped up from the chair, her heart racing. “Who are you? What do you want?”

Edgar folded his hands and leaned on them. “I’m your guide, Maya. Your mentor, so to speak.”

“Mentor for what?”

“We have a lot to talk about. Would you please sit?”

She backed up until she reached the door. Without turning, she fumbled for the handle, and a rush of hot air hit her as she pulled it open. Maya raised her hands as the sting of hundreds of tiny pebbles thrashed her face. She peered through her fingertips and squinted into the blinding rays of a low-hanging sun. The cascading sunbeams warmed her cheeks and illuminated the outline of a figure that looked a lot like the Sphinx in Egypt. She gasped and choked on air riddled with blowing sand.

Edgar laughed behind her. “Let me guess. You were thinking that you’d rather be anywhere but here, and somewhere deep in the back of your mind, you always wanted to see the Great Pyramids.”

He appeared beside her, and she allowed him to close the door. Sweat poured from Maya’s brow as the room instantly cooled.

“Do you want to be back at school?”

She nodded, terror constricting her from any other movement.

Edgar turned the handle and pushed. The secretary looked up from her computer, her eyes narrowed. He smiled, waved, and closed the door again.

Numbness crept from Maya’s toes and up her legs. She stumbled as he led her back to the chair.

Edgar eased her down. “Are you ready to talk to me now?”

She shook away her fright. “How’d you do that?”

“I didn’t do anything. You did.”

###

Wow, is she in for a wild ride or what? Can you imagine?  Anything she wishes for can happen.  But let’s remember what Stan Lee advises… There’s always a catch.

What about you? Have you ever faced a responsibility you weren’t sure you were ready for?

SCOTLAND BOOK LAUNCH!

Thanks once again, Nicky, for giving me space on your great blog to toot my own horn… no wait, blow my own bagpipes is a bit more appropriate since I’m north of the border in Bonnie Scotland.

bagpipes

Isn’t this a cool looking building with its towers on the front corners? You would think with the number of times I’ve been here that I’d have my own photo of the building and not have to find one online, but no. However, that will be rectified before this day is through.

My father was born here in the parish of Kennethmont where I’m hosting my book launch. This is all the more special because sadly, my dad didn’t live long enough to bring my mum and me here as he always wanted and someday planned to. I guess that’s a good reason to never put things off. But let’s get off the sad talk. This is a happy day.

This was another promise I made to myself. I think it’s important that we keep our word to anyone, but especially to ourselves. In this case, it’s even more poignant because my dad is gone. Still, I got my book published (through a lot of hard work and determination) and here I am in the Rannes Hall in Kennethmont launching my book, A Shadow in the Past, in my dad’s home parish.

 A Shadow in the Past

A-Shadow-in-the-Past-by-Melanie-Robertson-King[1]

When a contemporary teen is transported back through time to the Victorian era, she becomes A Shadow in the Past…

Nineteen-year-old Sarah Shand finds herself thrust back into the past. There she struggles to keep her real identity from a society that finds her comments and ideas strange and her speech and actions forward, unlike Victorian women. When Sarah verbally confronts confining social practices, including arranged marriages, powerful enemies commit her to a lunatic asylum. After falling in love with the handsome Laird of Weetshill, Robert Robertson, she must decide whether to find her way back to her own time or to remain in the past with him.

Thanks so much, Nicky, for letting me toot my own horn here on your wonderful blog today.

I’m still in awe how things with the library went ‘viral’. Well maybe not that extreme but from what I originally and planned, it certainly has.

But let me backtrack to the beginning so your readers know how everything came to be. Back when I was doing research for A Shadow in the Past (then called Sarah’s Gift), I emailed the Central Library looking for information on the city of Aberdeen in 1886. They were extremely helpful and sent me loads of material.

I promised them then, that WHEN my book was published, I would donate a copy to them. Well now my book is published, and I’m fulfilling my promise to them.

When I first contacted them, I mentioned the background (as I just did here) and my promise of a donated book. I went on to say that because I was a Canadian author with ties to the area, it might be fun to have the media there when I presented the book. I was thinking of only a photograph for the newspapers.

Things snowballed as they sometimes do, and here I am today at the Central Library in Aberdeen reading from my debut novel, A Shadow in the Past.

A new cover for STRIKER by Michelle Betham: It’s more about the sex than the soccer!

Welcome to a Sunday Special edition of CentreStage!

CS_Logo

Today, it is my tremendous joy to present you the amazing Michelle Betham as she’s touring to introduce the world to the new cover for her sexy football romance, Striker. There’s a great story here about the importance of book covers and the trials and tribulations an author goes through to make it JUST PERFECT. Thank you for sharing, Michelle, and take it away…

Striker re-launches with a
brand new cover!

To mark the imminent release of Extra Time, book two in my sexy soccer trilogy, I’ve decided to re-launch Striker – book one in the series – but this time, with a brand new cover! Why? Well, I have my reasons…

Striker - new cover

As one of many indie authors out there right now, I’m not lucky enough to be able to sell books on my name alone. And, as my writing journey has continued over the past couple of years, I’ve also begun to realise that covers really are one of the most important things to think about when writing a book. That old adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover” – well, that’s actually what people do when they’re looking at what to read next. The first thing they see is the cover for that book, and if that doesn’t grab them then it’s probably highly unlikely they’ll even look at the blurb or take any time to see if the story is something that interests them.

old strikerSo, is that the reason I decided to change the cover for my sexy soccer romance Striker? Sort of. Because it wasn’t actually my idea. I liked the original cover, you see. And I thought it was doing the job it was supposed to do. It reminded me of those Jilly Cooper novels I sued to love (and still do love) reading – Polo, Riders, Rivals, you know the kind of thing. But then, as my husband pointed out one night when we were talking about this, Jilly Cooper could stick a lawnmower on the cover of a book and it’d still sell. He also went on to point out that I’m no Jilly Cooper (a fact I was already acutely aware of), and that I should probably think about changing the cover for Striker. And when I’d listened to his reasons as to why he thought I should do this, I realised he might actually have a point.

The first thing that hits you in the face when you look at the original cover is the image of a football/soccer ball. And that in itself could be enough to make people avoid the book without even giving it a chance. That football may have been giving people completely the wrong idea of what Striker is actually about.

Women and football don’t always mix, there’s no secret about that – and, let’s face it, my books are aimed mainly at women. Yes, there are plenty of women out there who do love the sport (I’m one of them), but there are also a great many who loathe it. And some of those women could quite possibly be potential readers of mine. But, if they really dislike the sport that much, then the sight of a football on the cover of a book isn’t going to do much to attract them to the story, is it? Even though the book has very, very little to do with football itself. But it has a lot to do with the lives of the people who just happen to work within the sport.

Some readers who’ve already read the book have admitted that they don’t like football – some have even said they hate the sport. But they loved Striker. And what better comments could I have had than that? Proof that you don’t have to like football to enjoy the book. And that’s what I needed to get across to new, potential readers. I’ve playfully dubbed the trilogy “Fifty Shades of Football”, so that tells you something about the content, right there.

When all is said and done, Striker is a romance. A racy, edgy, sometimes very steamy romance, but it’s a romance nonetheless. And I needed to get that across on the cover. Which is why the book now sports something a little sexier, something that, I hope, gets the feel of the book across a lot more than the original cover did. Because Striker is definitely a book which is more about the sex than the soccer. More Footballers’ Wives than Match of the Day.

So, if it’s a book about football you’re looking for, you won’t find it with Striker, but if it’s a slice of sexy escapism you want, then I can guarantee you’ll find all of that, and more…

Do I read what I write?  Umm… Huh? Do I have to answer that?

Well hi-dee-hoo neighbors! Good to see ya!

I’m here to selfishly promote my book “Paper Wishes” offer some words of wisdom on a topic of Nicky Well’s choice. I do this hoping you will buy my book out of the kindness of my heart, because Nicky told me to is such a good friend.

So… What is the topic?

Reading books in the genre that you write.

Ummm… Really? Can’t I talk about something else? No? Ugh. Okay… so here’s the scoop.

I know that everyone out there who calls themselves an expert tells you to read inside your genre. Their reasons are totally sound:

  1. Get a feel for the market
  2. Make sure the story you want to write is not already written
  3. Learn from the style of others writing in your genre.

There may be other reasons, but since I’m going to debunk anyway, let’s just hit these three.

Let’s chat about these:

  1.  If I read books out right now, they were contracted at least a year ago. So, let’s say vampires are in… I write a vampire book. So do 100,000 other people. Publishers get tired of vampire books saturating the market and stop requesting them. Now I’m skunked, right? In my opinion, write what you want to write. Write what makes you happy. If it’s good, it will probably sell. You are going to spend six months or more with these characters… why stress out about writing characters you don’t like for a market that might not be there when you’re done?
  2. Who the heck cares if the story is already written? How many different versions of Red Riding Hood are out there? Ideas are not copyrighted. You can have the same idea as someone else. The trick is to put your own slant on it… and if I didn’t read a book like it (in the genre) I’d have to put my own slant on it,  right?
  3. Now that’s just  ridiculous. You can pick up on anything from any genre and apply it to  what you write in. If you do it well, it will transcend genre.

Here’s the God’s honest truth:

  • Last Winter Red, in the Make Believe Anthology, is a Dystopian. I don’t think I’ve ever read a dystopian, although I’ve seen movies. In fact, I had no idea that is was Dystopian until someone told me. Did not reading Dystopian hurt my story telling abilities? Nope! Seemed to work out fine for me!
  • Paper Wishes is a Contemporary Romances with heavy Christian influence. Do I read Christian Romance? Absolutely not! (Although there is nothing wrong with them) Romance as a whole is not my cup of tea, unless you mix some explosions in there. I wanted to make my Romance “Paper Wishes” more interesting, so I decided to shove in a supernatural theme, and since it was Christmas, I went with God… Imagine me… putting God back in Christmas. I’m such a  rebel! But that’s how this came about… I flexed a genre to make it     interesting to me… and I didn’t have to read a bunch of stuff that didn’t appeal to me.
  • The First Day of the New Tomorrow (Coming out in September of 2013) is a young adult urban fantasy. Now, I will admit to reading in this genre, but I couldn’t really point to anything of my past reading to say it was an influence.
  • Fire in the Woods is a contemporary YA Sci-Fi. Nope, I don’t read it. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve even seen anything like this anywhere. Hmmmm. That could be good, or bad.

What do I like to read? Give me knights. Give me Dragons. Give me Elves. Castles? Oh Yeah! Love it!

Why don’t I write it? Well, I tried once, but since I read SO MUCH OF IT I could not come up with anything that I thought was original. The novel lays at the bottom of my closet, half-written.

See my dilemma?

Nope, sorry. I will not start feverously reading inside the genres that I write. The next book I pick up will be because it interests me… not because I need to do research.

And as for castles and dragons…. I’ll leave writing those to the people who do them best.

Do you read inside your genre?

So, my lovelies. Here’s the question: do you read in your genre?

My answer is: yes. I do. Absolutely. 100 percent. I love my genre and all the fabulous writers in it. However, I don’t just read in my genre. I read crime and literary and historical and thriller and adventure, not to mention a large library of children’s books and novels that is setting up in my house again. I get inspired by techniques I observe in crime and thriller, particularly viz pacing and rhythm. I find ideas in children’s books. I love reading, full stop!

How about you?

Good morning, Nicky!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today!  I know you’re crazy busy with Sophie and her world.

So since you’re from the music world, I thought I’d bring up how different authors use music sometimes as a source of inspiration for books.  I know I do.  I have seen many, many authors make a complete playlist for one book and describe each song and draw a parallel to which part of the story it inspired.  For me, it’s a bit different.

I’d written the first two books of Racing to Love, as well as the novella about Brody before I came across the perfect song.  It was just one of a long list on my iPod and when it played, it was like a light went on and I knew “it” was the ‘theme song’ of sorts to the entire series.  You’ll have to go to YouTube and search for The Pretenders, I’ll Stand By You…it’s AMAZING, but the lyrics also seemed to fit each book of the Racing to Love series perfectly.  So instead of a playlist for each book…I have one song I just drift to during the ‘it’ moment of the book.

Well, I couldn’t resist the challenge, seeing as that this is one of my all-time-favourite goosebump-ballads too. Sadly, there’s no official (legal) Pretenders version to share via YouTube, but I found you this one instead ~ it’s nicely done and quite true to the original. Enjoy!

However, my process is evolving.  The next series, it seems as I’m writing each book, I’ll hear a song and have my ah-ha moment.  So it seems that each book will have its own song.

Then we jump forward about ten paces and Alex hit me hard.

I never spoke the title really of the last book of the series.  I had led people to believe that all the books were really focused heavily on the hero, well, in Eli’s Honor, we find out just who Alex is of Alex’s Destiny.  Music seemed to be one third of the puzzle that was her saving grace.  To the point, I actually wrote the song that is in the background of the book.

I’ve circled around, hitting about every type of influence music has on my stories.  I’ve always heard the lyrics when listening to a song, then the musical notes.  Some touch you and never leave, just as some books do.

Here’s to a great day, I hope you have a wonderful week.  Thank you again, Nicky.  And keep music and books near your heart!

Hugs,

Amy
