Today, it gives me immeasurable delight to welcome back the one and only Jane Risdon: rock star’s wife, photographer, great friend, and author extraordinaire. Jane is here to tell us about a couple of short stories that she has published in a recent anthology. Here goes… the stage is yours, Jane!

Dreamer
By Jane Risdon

The world of blogging has opened up a whole new way in which to make friends for me.  Since starting my own blog in 2011 I have come into contact and made friends with so many wonderful people, I sometimes have to pinch myself to convince myself it is all real – in a cyber-space reality sort of manner.

Not only have I made amazing friends, but I have also linked up with many talented authors and bloggers who have decided to include me in their daily visits online.  It has been such an enriching experience; one that has enabled me to contribute to various charitable publications they have undertaken for causes close to their hearts – and mine.

Those who know me are aware that I have already contributed several short stories to anthologies in aid of such charities and I am so proud to be able to share my latest contributions with you here.

In A Word: Murder is a collection of Crime stories written by award winning crime authors from around the world.  I am not aware winning but for some reason I have been included in this collection.

The stories are set in the world of publishing; book publishing and in my case music publishing too.  The book is dedicated to Crime writer, Blogger and Editor, Maxine Clarke, (aka Petrona), who died last year in The Princess Alice Hospice, Esher, Surrey, and proceeds from the sale of each book goes to the Hospice.

My two short stories cover the world of book publishing and music publishing.

Hollywood Cover Up is set in Beverley Hills where a young English woman finds herself working for the rich and famous, the movers and shakers in Music, Movies and Book Publishing and at the heart of Politics.  She soon finds herself in danger, on the run from those who employed her to run their homes and lives.  Just what did Tuppence see that caused her life to be threatened and which brought her to the attention of Washington and The Secret Service?

This is based on my experiences in Hollywood, living and working alongside the very type of people my story is about.  Once I got my head round the idea of book publishing which I felt couldn’t be that much different to music publishing, I was off.  So many experiences and memories….

Dreamer is set in England in the late 1980’s music scene, and is about a young Rock band, Dreamer, who have just been given their big break.  An international Record and Publishing Company, Gypsy Music, wants to sign them and a powerful American Music Mogul wants to manage them.  They’ve got it made.  At least they would, if it were not for one person standing in their way.

I’ve worked in the international music business for almost all my life and I know it inside out.  I’ve managed people who would happily kill their own mothers to get what they want and when confronted with the theme for In A Word: Murder, I immediately conjured up some of them.  It wasn’t difficult, believe me.

I’ve based the American manager on several people I had dealings with over the years, and one in particular, sent over from The States to ‘help’ us with a new artist our mutual record label had signed.  He was a star a living legend and subject of many books, and all his artists were and still are, super stars.  To say he had ‘interesting’ friends and ‘methods’ would be understating the whole experience.  He was a ‘family’ member and wanted us to join his ‘family’ and be looked after by him and the rest of the company.  He could ‘open’ doors and ‘smooth’ the way…..if!  If we gave over soul control of our act to him, if we would cut him in, if, if if…….

We played the game for a while and then did the unthinkable and the most dangerous thing he could imagine; we turned him down.  We waited with bated breath for the horses head and concrete boots but for some reason it amused him and the record label….they took it on the chin and put it down to our being so ‘British!’

He wasn’t the last in a long line of ‘friends,’ over the years and many in the same boat as us didn’t fare so well.  We survived.  Others didn’t.  We spent over 15 years with the ‘family,’ but he went on to pastures new and without our ever giving him anything.

Both stories are based on a lifetime of experiences in the Entertainment business, Hollywood and the rest of the world.  They say write about what you know, and I know this world all too well.  Writing these stories was really easy in the end.  It came naturally.  Worrying eh!

by Jane Risdon © 2013

Jake held his face where Mickey had bashed him; eyes filled with hatred he grabbed his guitar case and placed his beloved Gibson inside.  He took his book of lyrics off the desk and shoved it inside his back-pack.  Bozz stared at the floor, totally gutted at what had just happened to his childhood mate.  He really didn’t like this one bit.  Rab shook his long brown hair, his face in his hands, seriously freaked by it all. But neither would rock the boat; ruin their chances, miss out of the chance of a lifetime, however distasteful.

Only Mickey seemed to be fine with things, he glared at Jake, and then sat back down tapping out a rhythm on the arm of the sofa with his new Zildjian sticks.  The band was getting sponsorship deals for their gear, arranged by the record company; lots of perks were coming their way. And not just perks; there were the advances from the record deal and the publishing to look forward to.

Why should they lose out on all this because of Jake? Nope, he wasn’t going to miss out because of that stupid bastard.  No way.

‘Go home Jake, I’ll get your stack to you and the rest of your gear tomorrow.’ Bo held the control room door open.

‘This isn’t the end, you bunch of shits; you’ll come crawling back when you need new material, well screw you, screw the fuckin’ lot of you!’ Jake kicked the desk as he passed Bo.

In A Word: AWESOME!

Thank you, Jane, for showcasing your short stories and this anthology here today. I am hooked ~ IAWM is ready and waiting for me on my Kindle. Wishing you every success and all the best for a rocking festive season… Here’s hoping you can visit me again in 2014!

Gabriel’s Message

Happy Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

It was the second Sunday of Advent yesterday, and one of my favourite Church hymns seems to be prominently sung on and around that day. How lucky I feel that one of the world’s best singer-songwriters has also recorded a version of this song! Sit back as I bring you a Christmas ‘rock’ tune with a difference. Let yourself be enchanted by Gabriel’s message…

PS. And how do I know of this version, you ask? Well, there’s a question! It happens that Sting’s single “Russians” is the first record I ever bought with my pocket money. I didn’t even know what it was called, I had to sing it to the chap in the record store. And on the ‘B’ side of this prized possession…for yes, we’re talking real, actual vinyl here! On the ‘B’ side was none other than this very song. I didn’t know any Anglican church hymns at the time, living, as I did then, in Germany, but the song lodged in my brain and made a deep and lasting impression.

Now then. Instant reactions?

Hello, you! The Advent season is finally upon us, the St Nicholas Promo Sale for Spirits of Christmas is under way, and I’m allowed to post Christmas tunes on my blog. With that, sit back and grab a cuppa (or a glass of mulled wine) and let yourself be carried away by the playlist behind Spirits of Christmas. I’d love to hear your guesses on how these songs match the storyline! (Warning ~ a few songs are red herrings… songs that inspired me, but that have no direct relevance to the novella!). Have fun!

Why a St Nicholas Day Promo Sale?

Legends about St Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, abound in many shapes and forms; but they all involve helping the poor, protecting children and sailors, and spreading the word. Nicholas died on 6 December AD 343 in Myra, and the anniversary of his death became his saintly feast day.

Many say that St Nicholas (St Nick) was the ‘real’ Santa Claus. To this day, his feast day is widely celebrated all over Europe. In Germany, for example, children put out their Wellie boots on the evening of 5 December, recite poems and/or sing songs, and hope that St Nicholas will fill their boots with sweets and a small present.

So I thought I’d honour this tradition by wrapping my festive sale around his feast day. And obviously, the entire Wells family will be putting out their Wellie boots next week in hopes of a nice surprise…

Everybody *Had* a Good Time–Interview with The Darkness!!

Happy Friday! I can’t believe where this week’s gone. Doesn’t time fly when you have a good time?

So Tuesday saw my interview with ultimate UK glam rock band, THE DARKNESS. Dan Hawkins, Ed Graham and Frankie Poullain took time out of their busy schedules to sit down with myself, Ed Wellman and Tom Stevens to be interviewed for Siren 107.3 FM. It was amazing and humbling to chat with these guys. They were relaxed and very friendly, funny, thoughtful, and just a little tongue-in-cheek at times. Exactly how you’d imagine an iconic rock band to be between lunch and sound check. If you happen to be reading this, guys, I just want to say “thank you” again. You rocked!

At The Engine Shed: Frankie, Dan, myself and Ed, scrutinising my interview crib sheet (or not, LOL). 🙂

This interview was on air on Wednesday and Thursday night ~ but if you missed it, you can tune in now, right now, right here:

THE DARKNESS INTERVIEW ON SIREN 1073.FM

As if this wasn’t exciting enough, I also had the gig to go to later that day!  And it was brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Justin’s vocals as strong and unique as ever. Dan’s guitar playing extraordinary and breathtaking. Ed’s drumming powerful and mind-boggling. And Frankie’s bass playing bone-shaking and still-buzzing-in-my-head. The show had everything: Shrill riffs, stand-up comedy, handstands (you’ve got to see Justin’s leg-clapping to understand what I mean), crowd walking, awkward silences (Justin likes awkward silences, it appears), more comedy, audience participation, jump suits, a shiny bolero, and bobble hats. AWE-SOME.

Unfortunately, due to a technical hitch, my camera refused to take any photos, and my very ancient mobile wasn’t quite up to the task. To cap it all, I no longer have the lead to get photos off the mobile, so this… with apologies… is the best I can do. It’s my token, “I Was There” photo. And TBH, I was way too busy singing and rocking along to worry about taking photos.

So. Everybody Had a Good Time. I’m still reeling. What a week!

The Darkness very definitely rocks!

Wooohooo!!!

And there’s more! Because: *squeeeeeeeeeeeee* All things being well and no hiccups, disasters or other unscheduled mishaps getting in the way, I’ll be interviewing The Darkness briefly tomorrow before the show, for and on behalf of The Midweek Drive on Siren 107.3 FM.  Excuse me a moment while I go cheer quietly in a corner of my study…  Okay, back again. The interview is scheduled to be aired on Wednesday, 27 November 2013, on Siren 107.3 FM between 5pm and 7pm. Tune in or miss out! More news plus photos –assuming I get Permission to Land Post! — soon…. 😀

CentreStage with Robin Leigh Morgan ~ I Kissed A Ghost

Welcome to CentreStage!

Today, it’s my great pleasure to welcome the wholly unique Robin Leigh Morgan to my blog. Robin has put together an interview to tell you all a little more about herself… and an anniversary promotion that she is running for the next three days. Read on to find out more! Robin, the stage is yours….

robin1

Let’s begin by you telling us a little about yourself?

Of course, by now you and your readers know I love listening to music. How else would I be able to post my musical responses each week?

I’m a retired NY City employee who’s been married for 20 years today [November 20th] with no children. A few years ago, I stopped writing commentaries for a community newspaper after writing them for over ten years. During this time while I’d been working I also started writing [on/off] an adult Contemporary romance. However, after ten years I still had no success.  It wasn’t until someone suggested I should write for a younger audience that my writing finally blossomed, and I wound up writing my first YA Paranormal/Time Travel/First Kiss romance novel entitled “I Kissed a Ghost.”

Given this week is not only my 20th anniversary, it’s also my OH’s birthday. I’m having a special promotion for the KINDLE edition in the US and the UK through November 23d. In case you’re wondering about my picture, ever since I began making my presence known on the internet I’ve never posted my own picture, and neither has my OH; mostly due a sense of wanting some privacy in our lives.

Would you care to leave an excerpt from your novel for my readers?

I feel a single excerpt from a published book is limited in what it can offer regarding the book.  Instead, if anyone is interested in reading several UNEDITED SNIPPETS from the book, please check out the “GHOSTLY WHISPERS” entries of these blog sites:
http://www.mypennameonly.blogspot.com or
http://www.mypennameonly.wordpress.com

How did the idea of the story come to you?

To tell the truth, the whole story had been one of pure imagination, as I wrote it, I saw different ways of letting the story develop, and chose one which I felt could be built upon. In the beginning I did have a skeleton of an outline for the storyline and nothing more.

robin2

When it comes to your writing, do you consider yourself to be a plotter or a pantser?

I’d probably say a little of both. As I said in the above, I made a skeleton of an outside, writing down the basic plot points I’d like to hit as the story unfolded; and as a sculptor starting with a wire base of what they’d like to have, I added material, then took some away, until I had the finished product I had in mind.

Titles are at times more difficult to come up with than the actual writing of the book itself. How did you come up with yours?

Selecting a title for a book had been a very challenging experience for me; but after racking my brain over it, I decided to merely summarize the premise for the entire story in as few words as possible until I had something which could be used as the title for my book. Hence, since the story is about a girl [Mary] and her kissing the ghost [George] she had living in her house; the story had to be called, “I Kissed a Ghost.”

What is your current writing endeavor?

It’s actually the adult contemporary romance I’d started years ago with a paranormal element that runs through parts of the storyline.  With all the experience I’ve gained writing “I Kissed a Ghost,” I’ve chosen to write it anew from the beginning. And this time around I’m finding it a lot easier than the first time.

Would you care to share an unedited excerpt from your WIP?

I’d be delighted to share unedited one here. In this excerpt Warren Ashton had showed up at Jessica door as she ate her dinner with a letter stating she’s ready to use his services as an architect. In this excerpt we learn something shocking about the letter from William Griffith:

With a melancholic tone in her voice Jessica replied “We’d lived together for two years; but about fourteen months ago, a month before we were to be married, he died.”

Warren couldn’t believe Jessica’s answer and felt compelled to inquire, “Did you just say he died?”

“I did.”

A look of total disbelief and shock came over Warren.

“If he’s dead…then how–then how did I get this letter? And why now, so long after he has died?”

“I’ve received several letters from him since his death, and I’ve stopped trying to figure it out. But there’s one thing which is certain whenever I’ve receive one, something important is about to happen in my life.”

“I guess I must be the next important thing in your life” replied Warren jokingly, eyeing Jessica as he spoke.

Where else can we find you on the internet?

Nicky, I feel quite honored being allowed to take the Center Stage so your readers can find out more about me and my debut YA Paranormal romance novel.  THANKS for having me.  I await the comments and questions of your readers.

And no I haven’t forgotten to post a musical selection here, I only do responses, I don’t instigate them.  🙂

Wow! Congratulations on your 20-year anniversary, Robin, what a big day for you! Thank you for taking the time to visit here today and for sharing the joy with my readers by way of a special promo. Rock on! Wishing you best of luck for the next 20 years and the next 20 books…. 🙂
