Ho Hey

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Today I’d like to share with you a song that’s slowly crept into my consciousness of late. Everytime it’s on the radio, I feel myself singing along softly, strumming an imaginary guitar, bopping my head, and going, ho, hey!

It’s gentle but powerful. I like the guitars and the rhythm and the chanting. (Do you call it chanting? Or is it shouting? Well, you know what I mean). I’m determined to check out more by this band. Ho hey, sit back and enjoy!

Have you got a song that’s a slow burner for you but that really makes your day?

Date Night!

Everybody needs a rest sometimes, right?

Even authors. Because let’s face it, it’s not all sitting at your desk with your feet up sipping cups of tea while typing out a few leisurely words here and there…

So it was half-term and the boys went to the grandparents for a few days to give my lovely husband and me sometime to catch up on house and garden chores, do some writing (in my case) and music-making (in husband’s case). Well, it didn’t work out that way. With the house quiet and the stress greatly reduced, we both fell into the lazy trap. It was as if our bodies were saying, right, enough now, time for some chilling out.

Time to go out… or stay in?

Okay, then. We gave in, quite readily. We decided to have some proper time off. This was after we’d both fallen asleep on our respective sofas before lunch. Evidently, we were tired!

We went to have a walk in a nearby nature reserve and made plans to go to the cinema and have a meal out. By the time we finished our walk, we’d discovered that neither of us particularly felt like glamming up and going out. Instead, we stopped out our local supermarket, stocked up on ingredients and cooked ourselves a yummy three-course meal. We started cooking at about six p.m. and we finished tidying the pots away at about ten p.m. We listened to music and drank wine and had a little dance while we were at it.

OH in charge. He does love cooking!

Let's dance!

Let’s dance!

Do you know what? It was bliss. Apart from the fact that I was wearing pyjamas, it was almost like a return to a date night of old, before we were officially together (ha ha, that’s going back a few years now!), when we’d spend hours cooking and chatting and laughing and finding things out about each other.

We went out for a meal and a movie the next day (we saw A Good Day to Die Hard!), and that was fabulous too. And on the Monday morning, when I sat down in front of the computer again, I felt really inspired. I hammered out nearly 5,000 words in the space of a single morning.

Well, I tell you, if a weekend off produces that dramatic a result… I’m all for it! See you on Monday, folks. Rock on!

What’s your favourite ‘date night’ in ~ or out? How do you recharge and refresh body and mind?

Who Will You Run To?

It’s Music Monday!

Do you ever randomly go through your CD collection (if you happen to have one, these days) and suddenly stumble across an album that you used to have on continuous play but that you haven’t listened to in absolute aeons?

Well, I did, over the weekend, and here’s what I found. I’m absolutely enchanted all over again. In fact, I had a really hard time deciding whether I wanted to bring you the album opener or another of my favourites, but this has a certain… relevance to my books (and my life, LOL, but that’s a different story), so here it is.

Now tell me: what’s your long-forgotten favourite?

The REAL highlights of my VIRTUAL book launch

OIt’s just over a week since the launch of Sophie’s Run and I’ve had a little time to catch my breath. It has occurred to me that I enjoyed this second book launch a lot more than my first. Don’t misunderstand me, there was nothing wrong with the launch for Sophie’s Turn, a great time was had by all, the consensus was that it was a rocking party, but. There are a few things I did differently for Sophie’s Run, and they made a huge difference for me.

Making fireworks without seeing the sparkle?

Many authors these days celebrate their book launches online. We use Facebook and Twitter and Goodreads to host our parties, and we have a great time doing so. More importantly, this avenue has the potential to reach thousands of people all over the world.

However, for the author, the event can be a little surreal. There’s so much going on; the Tweets and Facebook comments come flying, you’re glued to the computer for the entire day, barely daring to leave your desk for a toilet break, let alone food. And that’s exhausting. It can feel like you’re creating massive fireworks that you can’t actually see yourself.

The very REAL highlights of my second book launch

So what did I do differently for Sophie’s Run?

I’ve been giving this some thought because the additional things I did weren’t the result of a deliberate strategy. Rather, they were the confluence of all the observation and learning and experience that came to me in the six months between the launches. And here are my three topline thoughts.

A Preview Party

Siren Launch PartySome time in October, I became involved with Siren FM, Lincoln’s first community radio station. Courtesy to the enthusiastic support of the host of the midweek drive show, Alex Lewczuk, I took part in several editions of the show as well as the ‘end of the world’ Mayathon in December. Somewhere along the way, the idea was born that we could celebrate the launch of Sophie’s Run live on air, on the eve of publication. We invited some special guests, we publicized the event ahead of time, and we had a go. It was a new format for the station as well as for me, and we had great fun. To me, that kick-started the launch day proceedings with real fireworks that I could see, feel and–thanks to the podcasts–can still hear today.

A Book Signing

Next, I had this idea of inviting readers to a very short ‘quick-fire’ book signing event at my local library on the actual morning of my launch day. I can tell you, when I had to leave my Facebook party, I frankly thought I was mad. I reassured myself that I would be back within the hour to resume my social media partying.

Launch Library SignIt turned out I was wrong on the timeframe and the madness factor. The event was a huge success, and here’s why. As I had set a half-hour time limit, most people turned up at 10 a.m. on the dot. We had coffee and tea and biscuits, and we chatted. Questions were being asked and before I knew it, there was an animated discussion about what it’s like to be a writer, how writing fits in with being a mum, and more. They asked for a reading; I hadn’t prepared one, but I gave one anyway. Most of my audience bought and walked away with a signed copy of Sophie’s Run. That felt really good. That was real. I had officially launched this book into the world. And ok, it took a little longer than half an hour, but it was worth it!

Chatting with readers all over the world

SWAGLast but not least, I took a slightly different approach to my Facebook party. I asked questions. I had some SWAG to give away, and I ran a few little spot-competitions. I got some fantastic discussion strings going, the most popular being my choice of Chinese takeaway for dinner. And when the fun was over, I got to sit down and write to the readers who won prizes. That, too, was real. In fact, that was absolutely amazingly fantastic.

Writing Readers

So ~ three real things, quick, short activities that made a tremendous difference to how real my virtual book launch felt. If I may be permitted a soppy moment, I’d like to say that I allowed myself to see my own fireworks, and I enjoyed them!

Was it the perfect book launch? Of course not. There are always things you can do different, things you learn, things you need to change.

How will I approach the book launch for Sophie’s Encore in September, you ask? Will I have another radio party? Frankly, I haven’t got a clue right now. I’m letting this come to me and I’ll see what feels right nearer the time. But I’ll be certain to include things that make the launch ‘real’ for me, and for my readers.

What do you think? Can you see this working for you? How do you make your fireworks sparkle for you?

What’s your token of love?

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Even if it’s not your thing, even if you’re not celebrating today (I’m not ~ OH and I are leaving our romantic night-on-the-town until the weekend when the kids are at the grandparents) or, indeed if you’re not celebrating at all:

I still wanted so share my love and appreciation for all of you lovely blog readers and followers. It wouldn’t be worthwhile blogging without you! 🙂 Thank you!!

Now suppose you received a card like this…

Kermit

…what would be YOUR perfect token of love, either to give or to get?

🙂

And what a week it’s been since I last posted here. A radio party and a book launch on two consecutive days. Both went well and left me reeling with excitement and joy. Now it’s time to take the book on tour, and I needed a slow, mellow song to allow myself to get my breath back and to set a good pace for the months to come.

A new favourite singer came to mind. She has simply got the most astounding voice, she’s an outstanding live performer and she writes meaningful lyrics. So I give you…

Later in the week, I’ll be posting an update on how the launch went and what I’ve been up to since. Meanhile, I raise my glass in a little toast to everyone who supported me these past few days, weeks, months, and years…

Launch day for Sophie’s Run!

7 February.
On this day in 2012, I had submitted my first novel, Sophie’s Turn, to Sapphire Star Publishing a few weeks previously. I was waiting with bated breath to hear back, having shared this latest submission with only my closest three friends and, of course, my husband. I was trying to keep a lid on it.

OSo imagine how excited I am today, less than a year that I signed with my publisher, to shout about the release of my second book, Sophie’s Run.

This might be a good time to put a finger in your ears.
LOL!

The Preview Party

YesSR_Siren_badgeterday, I had the tremendous pleasure of hosting a Preview Launch Party for Sophie’s Run over on Siren 107.3 FM. Chief host and producer was, of course, the one and only Alex Lewczuk, who very kindly dedicated the midweek drive show to this launch. We had some illustrious guests phoning in and here are the highlights:

Let’s party….

From Radio Nerves to Radio Buzz

The thick door opens and you’re ushered into the inner sanctum by the clip-board carrying assistant. The stillness of the air immediately envelopes you ~ not a breeze, no  outside sound can intrude into this secluded space. The walls are lined in soundproofing material and the small window is heavily double-glazed, with the panes slanting inwards at a peculiar, unfamiliar angle. You swallow hard. This is it!

The host rises to greet you, a warm smile immediately putting you at ease. In a nervouse daze, you vaguely take in the console with all the buttons, the headphones, the computer screens. Finally, reluctantly,  you sit down in the guest chair, an enormous microphone thrust into your face. You open your mouth. Your time has come. What will you say?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week, I announced tomorrow’s big radio preview party for Sophie’s Run right here on this blog. As I was writing, I suddenly realized I was excited and exhilarated about the event, but not nervous, at least not about the radio side of things. Anymore!
I got a lot of questions after the blogpost went live. Many friends made jokey comments about how I’d become quite used to gracing the airwaves, and would I get my own show soon? I can’t answer that, but there is one recurring question that I now feel at least partially qualified to answer, and that’s what this post is about.
Siren 107.3 FM Midweek Drive, 23 January 2013
Siren 107.3 FM Midweek Drive, 23 January 2013
What’s it like to be on the radio?
Just over a year ago, I wouldn’t have been able to answer this question either and yet strangely, since December 2011, occasional radio appearances have begun to feature in my life. (You can find a blog diary of these events right here. 🙂 ) I’m not a pro by a long shot but I have lost that jittery attack of radio nerves and I simply get the most enormous buzz from being on the radio. This is what it’s like to be on the radio—for me:
Exciting. Being invited to take part in a radio show is exciting in many ways. First of all, there is the obvious thought that there will be people listening to what you say. You get a big audience and the possibilities are endless. Second, there is the excitement of going to visit a real studio, meeting a real radio host. Using a microphone, and seeing the red ‘On Air’ signs. Awesome!
Scary. Did I mention that people will be listening, and the possibilities are endless? Among those possibilities is the potential for a monumental lapse of judgement, that dreadful faux pas, that Bridget-Jones (or indeed Sophie-Penhalligan) moment when you open your mouth and say completely the wrong thing. The show goes out live—there will be no opportunity to take anything back if you make a bumbling idiot out of yourself.
Unreal. Uh-huh, once you get chatting to that wonderful host who’ll make you feel at ease and stop you from turning into a jittery heap of jelly, once you’ve uttered the first few sentences into that big fat microphone pointing in your face… You forget. You forget about all the people listening, it’s just you and the host. You just talk, and it’s only afterwards that you remember that people are listening.
OK, so I do look terrified, but I had a great time. Honestly!
Nicky and Nicola after the chat on BBC Lincolnshire on 22 January 2013. OK, so I do look terrified, but I had a great time. Honestly!
Dangerously blundersome. (If, like me, you have a propensity for foot-in-mouth disease)
Let me give you an example or two. Twice I have been asked, on air, why I moved to Bristol, and both times I gave the same long-winded answer (learn, Nicky, learn?) involving an explanation of why my husband and I shunned a certain other city in our search for a new abode. “The good people of *&()(*$£^% will never now buy your books,” my husband joked after the first time and I lost sleep over it, went back to the podcast at least a dozen times, trying to decide whether there was real slander in my utterance. There wasn’t, of course, but what if I’d picked different words? What if somebody did take umbrage?
On air sign
Then there was the time when I was asked what makes Dan (my rock star hero) so attractive. I went into great detail describing Dan and… changed his hair colour. Uh huh. I knew seconds after I’d said it that I got mixed up. Absolutely nobody else picked up on it but it jarred me and I felt jittery and scared all over again.
And most recently, I used a swear word on air. I couldn’t help it, it was right on the page that I was supposed to be reading. I didn’t think it was that bad a word, but it got a hiss and a raised eyebrow from the producer and I shrank and quivered in my boots, even more so when the host offered a quick apology for the use of bad language right after I finished reading. I could feel my ears burn red and I wanted to disappear in the ground. Nothing happened, obviously, and the consensus after the show was that really it wasn’t that bad a word for otherwise I wouldn’t have used it in my writing—but you never know who takes offense (I refer you back to points Scary and Unreal) and it’s better to err on the side of caution. Yes, indeed, lesson well and truly learned. I hope!
Exhilarating. I have mentioned the buzz, haven’t I? When you come off air and the show is done (or at least, your slot has finished), the adrenaline rush is totally overpowering. It’s like you’ve drunk a gallon of coffee and you are literally humming with excitement all over. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have a big smile on your face and you’ll just want to sing, shout, let it all out about the fabulous time you’ve had on the radio, blundersome moments notwithstanding. This buzz is addictive, it truly is. It’s a delicious head-rush that perhaps gives a small insight into what an actor, movie star or rock star must feel like after a performance.
Nicky and Elise after the interview in December '11
Nicky and Elise after the interview on BBC Bristol in December ’11
So what would be my do’s and don’t’s for you if you have your first radio appearance coming up?
~Prepare, but don’t over-prepare. Know yourself and your books, and practice saying your two-line elevator pitch out loud several times, but don’t make yourself a slave to the exact text. You want to come across as lively and enthusiastic, not as a reciting robot. On that note—leave your crib notes outside the studio. Honestly, you’ll just get distracted. You’re not sitting an exam. You’re talking about YOU. Just wing it.
~Get there early. There’s nothing worse than turning up flustered and out of sorts.
~Don’t get hung up on the radio-ness of it all. It is only the airwaves (even though there may be webcams involved these days) but it’s all transient. Keep it real.  🙂
~Relax and have a good time. As with any kind of performance or public appearance, your listeners (and radio host) will take their cue from you. If you’re nervous, everyone will feel slightly anxious. (Yes, I know this comment isn’t helping, but it’s important to remember!!). If you’re at ease, everybody else will be at ease. If you’re enjoying yourself, everybody else will have a great time. Said something wrong or silly? Well, either ignore it or laugh about it. There, done. You can do this!
~Smile! Weird as it sounds, research has shown that you can hear a smile in someone’s voice.
Have you been on the radio or even the TV? I’d love to hear about it. Are you preparing for an appearance? Let me know if my thoughts helped. Rock on!
PS. What, me, nervous? About TOMORROW? Never. Why would I be? What could possibly go wrong? I suppose the phone lines could go down, or the computer for that matter. Or people might not phone in, or be poorly. I might lose my voice. Alex might lose his voice. I might say something really stupid. The sky might fall on my head and the world might come to an end… *Rallies* It’ll be FINE!
Open Your Heart
It’s Music Monday!
NewMusicMondayLogoAnd it’s launch week for Sophie’s Run, whoohooo! In keeping with my rock theme during the countdown to Sophie’s Run, I’m bringing you another one of my favourites. However, today I’m keeping it a little mellow ~ giving myself, and you, a little breather before the madness of Wednesday and Thursday. This is one of my favourite ballads and it is quite fitting for Dan and Sophie’s circumstances at the end of Sophie’s Turn.
Have a sit back, enjoy and… get ready for the rest of the week!
Now I’ve seen Europe many times… but actually meeting the band is still on my bucket list!
Who would you like meet backstage?
Come on Tour with Sophie and Dan! ~ Sophie’s Run Blog Tour
Can it really be time for another blog tour already? My second masterpiece, Sophie’s Run, launches next week on 7 February, and I have the blog tour all sorted out. Well, you know me. I’m organized like that. And I like to party!
As before, I am going to stop at lots of blogs; nearly sixty, in fact. The tour includes many of my blogger friends old and new, and a fabulous cast of book bloggers from  Reading Addiction Blog Tours, kindly organized for me by my lovely publisher, Sapphire Star Publishing. There is a tremendous diversity here and I am truly excited to embark on this journey… and to take you with me.
Blog Tour with a Difference
Speaking of: this blog tour really is a journey in more ways than one, and this makes it quite different from my previous tours. In addition to the traditional-style fun interviews and interesting guest posts, there is also a theme that connects many of the features.
Sophie and Dan would like to take you on a tour of geographic and culinary discovery, showing you many of the places they have visited and sharing recipes for their favourite meals. Are you ready to go on tour with my hero and heroine?
But first things first: Thank You!
As always, I want to give due credit and say Thank You to all these amazing bloggers and fellow authors who are giving up their time and making space on their blogs to help me shout about Sophie’s Run. There are some new faces in the roll call, and I am so thrilled to have met you and enticed you onto this journey. And there are plenty of familiar faces who haven’t tired of undertaking my publication journey with me, coming along for a second and, in some cases, even a third time. I hope you know how much your support means to me. Whether new friend or long-standing best mate, I couldn’t do this without you. Thank You.
