A Man’s Life
Guest post by Dominic Holland

Dominic Holland

We don’t really get to choose the events that form and shape us. They just happen. Episodes and incidents that remain with us for our entire lives.

One such event in my life came when I was being bullied at school and a boy I barely knew came to my rescue. He was older than me and I can remember that he was enormous.

I was incredibly grateful but cannot recall saying thank you at the time and the whole incident has remained with me and has come to inspire my latest novel, A Man’s Life. A story that that has taken thirty years to gestate and a book that has taken seven years to write.

I have long thought that my encounter with the ‘enormous’ rescuer would be a great starting place for a story. A story of how these boys are brought back together again some thirty years later and the impact that they have on each other as adults. An innocuous school encounter then that would reunite them and change each of their lives forever.

This idea excited me and I began plotting my novel. Other factors and experiences in my life leant themselves easily and quite soon, I was ready to begin.

A year or so in to writing (I won’t go in to why the book took me so long to complete) I was contacted over the internet by guess who?

The very same boy – now a man – who had come to my rescue. Given the story that I was writing, you can imagine my excitement at hearing from him. It was fate obviously and a sign that my book was meant to be. I tend to romanticise a lot as readers of any of my books will testify to.

The man explained that he had been at school with me but that I wouldn’t remember him. He was contacting me because he wanted me to come and do a show in his village hall as a fund raiser. Of course I agreed.

I couldn’t wait to tell him about the novel I was writing and I was even more excited when he explained that he had no recollection of the bullying incident at all.

An incident that had resonated and stayed with me – and for him, it was nothing.

I was thrilled to meet him again and we have stayed in touch. This chance re-encounter was a good omen for my novel. Without question, it was destined to become a sensational international best seller…

The book is now finished and is the closest thing I have written to a biography – with the exception of my latest book – how Tom Holland eclipsed his dad – a story that is entirely true and completely based on my actual life.

A Man’s Life is yet to become an international sensation, but I remain ever hopeful.

Book Cover

Sometimes in life, things happen for a reason. Little things. Tiny things that appear innocuous and incidental at the time but can go on to have life changing consequences. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. A Man’s Life is a heart rending novel that draws on this theme. Break-time at St. Edmunds School in 1970 and Tom Harper is a twelve year kid being picked on by a bully. An everyday scenario played out thousands of times all over the country and indeed the world. Paddy Porter is an older boy who knows neither of the boys involved but he senses the mismatch and he settles the dispute. It is not something he has ever done before but the moment takes him and in doing so, he changes both of their lives. The bully backs down and life goes on. Tom and Paddy connect only with a glance. Tom is embarrassed and can only shrug his thanks and they part. No words exchanged and yet in this moment, these two boys are irrevocably linked. A fleeting moment that some thirty years later will set in motion events that will save and complete each of their lives. In 2013, Tom is a broken man. A bereavement renders his wealth and success utterly meaningless and he cannot recover. Prostrate with grief and in hospital, Tom’s memory releases the forgotten incident in the playground and his encounter with Paddy. He feels compelled to revisit the Birmingham suburb where he grew up and see what ever became of the big boy who had rescued him. And so an unlikely friendship ensues which has a beautiful synergy. Paddy too is a man in great need and he is unable to solve his crisis alone. Unbeknownst to them both, what each man needs is precisely what the other has to give.

A Man’s Life is a novel that affirms life. A heart rending love story that will move readers from tears to laughter and to joy. A book that celebrates the human spirit and values love and kinship above all else. Holland has made his living by observing human nature. He makes people laugh by reflecting our lives in his own. This is his first novel in ten years but this story and its gestation has occupied much of this decade. It could not be written quickly. Based on a series of real events in his own life, it is a story that needed to evolve. A Man’s Life has been a long time coming but it has been worth the wait. A beautiful story of love and loss, Holland shines a brilliant light on human nature. Our vulnerability and our impotence and our need for other people and their love to complete us as human beings.

DEAD GAME
Finalist in the People’s Book Prize!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today Nicky – I’m so delighted to be here.  I love the fact that us authors are so supportive of one another.  It makes the writing world all the more fun to be in.

Today, I really would just like to let you all know about my debut novel, Dead Game, the first in The Game Trilogy, and how it has been made a finalist in The People’s Book Prize (the literary world’s version of the X-Factor).  As you can imagine I am delighted that Dead Game readers have responded and back in the Autumn, voted for my work – but now that it has made it into the finals, I need to start my mini campaign again and this is the week – voting ends on the 28th May 2013.  So, let me tell you a little bit about Dead Game, why I wrote it and why you should vote for it.

Introducing DEAD GAME

Charles - Copy

The Game Trilogy, particularly Dead Game, was written in memory of my cousin Charles, who served out in Iraq 2003 – it’s about the journey of a young Lance Corporal whose life was cut short.  It begs the questions, ‘are we really just a heavy mass of bodies made up of blood, bone and skin, glued to the Earth by gravity, running around creating a giant mess?’   It’s a question that will be answered with a thousand different voices.   But in my moment of grief and as my atonement to my cousin, and every soldier who has stood for their country, Dead Game is my answer.  The conflicts of today and the pressures that are on our soldiers shoulders are all too clear for us to see, particularly given the Woolwich Soldier news of yesterday.

Dead Game is an epic reflection of our wanting to connect with something bigger than ourselves; a fantasy entwining English patriotic family values and tradition with profound philosophy and spirituality and at the same time, it is the deepest love story.  Uplifting all those who have ever loved and lost, it strives to put forward one answer to death and is an allegorical story of bravery, acceptance, friendship, trust and love, but in the same breath, it is the ultimate adventure of a soldier, propelled by the inconceivable motivation to survive.

Dead Game Cover

With guardian angels, a cursed centaur and mythical saints, Lance Corporal Archie Fletcher battles his way through Transit, discovering an underwater world of ancient secrets and brawling with wild lions, enraged charioteers and venomous plants. With the Moon’s trickery endangering his sanity and a three-headed dragon that never sleeps blocking his path, Dead Game is no easy feat. The fantasy will whisk you away to a parallel world confirming the knowing deep within us all that the adventure of life must go on.

And there’s more…

The sequel to Dead Game and the second part in the trilogy, ‘Waiting Game’, was released on 3rd March 2013 with Ghostly Publishing Ltd and follows Sarah Walker after the tragic death of her cousin, Archie.  Embarking on a long-awaited trip around the world she lands herself in a dingy Thai soi and runs into a forgotten rogue from her past.  Terrified, Sarah flees and in doing so, finds herself in a ghostly world with warped satyrs, dual-headed snakes, and a wicked witch who plots to enslave her; trying to piece together the jigsaw of her past in time; the true meaning of friendship is at stake.  Waiting Game is a dangerous journey but it is a fragile heart that travels it.  Compelled to move on whether she wants to or not, Sarah’s scars run deep, but just how far will she go in an attempt to find Archie?

You can find DEAD GAME on AMAZON!

Supporting Charity

The Game Trilogy supports ‘The Soldiers Charity’ (Army Benevolent Fund), who gives a lifetime of support to those serving and retired soldiers and their families.  My family could not have got through it without them, which is why a percentage of every book sold will be going to their life-saving cause.

Vote now: Dead Game is a Finalist in the People’s Book Prize!

Dead Game can only win with YOUR votes… it doesn’t cost anything to vote… all you need to do is click the link below, register, scroll down two books and click on VOTE FOR DEAD GAME – it will take 30 seconds, so please, please, please when you have 30 seconds spare, vote for my hero’s tale.

Every life is like a novel with the ending ripped out.  Nobody really knows what is to come.  My fantasy can be read on many different levels… teenagers particularly seem to have taken to it but really, it’s just a story about a soldier, gone too soon.  I hope, if you read it, you can all relate to it and that it strengthens you.

With all my best wishes

Claire

CentreStage with Samantha Stroh Bailey: Meeting Jamie and Finding Lucas

Welcome to CentreStage!
CS_Logo

CentreStage showcases fabulous authors from around the world, and today it is my extra-special, huge pleasure to welcome the fabulous Samantha Stroh Bailey, author of the outstanding romantic comedy, Finding Lucas. Sam has a tremendous sense of humour and over recent weeks we’ve discovered that we have so much in common, it’s like we’re long-distance soul sisters. I kid you not! So without further ado, I give you:

Samantha Stroh Bailey!

samheadshotauthorcentral

Thanks so much to the fabulous Nicky Wells for inviting me here today.

Nicky: Why, thank you for visiting! I’m so thrilled you could make it all the way from Canada today, Sam!

Nicky and I met through social media and instantly bonded over writing, motherhood and sassy senses of humor. I loved Sophie’s Turn and am so happy to have found another author I admire.

Nicky: *blushes* why, thank you!

I thought I’d give a peek into the, perhaps, somewhat unexpected aspects of my personality. Here goes!

  1.  I’m a Gemini, so I have a dual personality. While I’m very easygoing and down- to-earth, I’m also anxious and stress about the little things.
  2. I love meat and nothing is better than gnawing on a giant bone. Disgusting, I know.
  3. I don’t like bread and pasta.
  4. I’m scared of thunder, snakes, heights, and not accomplishing everything I want to.
  5. Technology also scares the crap out of me.
  6. I love alternative music and a lead singer who screams has me for life. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden has the sexiest voice in the world.
  7. I’m addicted to celebrity gossip.
  8. People think I smile all the time, but they don’t see me when I first wake up, and I’m a bear.
  9. When you’re talking to me, I’m watching your every move for writing fodder. Sorry.
  10. I was a competitive dancer for years until stage fright derailed my plans of going to Juilliard and re-enacting Flashdance. The audition part—not the exotic dancer part.

Nicky: Wow, Sam, thank you for sharing! I’m with you on most of these points although I have to confess loving my carbs. And now I’ll forever envisage you in the role of exotic dancer… 🙂

I’m always excited when readers feel a connection to Jamie Ross, the protagonist in my debut novel, Finding Lucas. And I am so intrigued when people point out our similarities and differences from their perspectives. Well, here’s my view!

Jamie and I:

  1.  are both huge coffee addicts.
  2. love to drop the F bomb into adult conversation.
  3. both have gorgeous and tall BFFs.
  4. adore men with messy hair and stubble.

 Unlike Jamie…

  1. …I am quite fond of the color pink.
  2. …I tend to embarrass my family instead of the other way around.
  3. …I wish I had her ass.
  4. …I’m a better dancer.

I’m so grateful to everyone who has read and enjoyed Finding Lucas.

FLNov22Bigpaperback

Nicky: Sorry to interrupt again but… Me! Me! I loved Finding Lucas. I couldn’t put it down. I laughed out loud, and I cried, and I gnawed my fingers when the plan… (don’t want to give any spoilers here!)…um…shall we say, when the plan comes to fruition. Sort of. It’s an awesome, fabulous, life-affirming and sassy read and I couldn’t recommend it more. LOL, end of broadcast. Sam, you were saying?

And I hope you liked this little glimpse into the real me! I love to hear from my readers, so please connect with me!

Which one most surprises you?
Do you have a quirky trait that you’d like to share with us?

~ Excerpt ~

When the rain got me, I was still running along an unfamiliar street that seemed endless on both directions. Within seconds, the drizzle became a cold downpour that soaked me to the bone, plastering the thin shirt and jeans onto my body. My hair was sticking on my face, pricking my eyes like dozens of needles, but I didn’t stop. Lost in a haze of despair, I could not comprehend the faint voice in my head that warned me to go back. I kept running away. Where I was heading, I could not tell anymore. Everything around me seemed strange and obscure; no houses, no shelter, only the perennial olive trees and the murky veil of rain. For the last two years in my life, every day, every minute, every second had been spinning around one single pivot; that rescue mission had been the only pivot of my new life. It had defined my actions, my thoughts, and my whole existence. I had gone a long way, overcoming any personal limit and fear, transcending time, only because I was fixed on a purpose. I had left my old life behind.
I had a life once.

Now, my mission was my life. A mission that had taken me far away from my family, my friends, my studies and my future. But I did not care anymore. I had chosen my destiny. It had always been about him. Christopher. He had turned his back on me and the pivot support had suddenly vanished. I had nothing to lean on. My whole life was collapsing. I was collapsing. There was no angel coming to my rescue this time.

A sharp pain in my chest blocked my breath, forcing me to stop. But I welcomed the pain, didn’t want it to ease out. Strangely enough, it seemed to be the right thing to feel. This is how some people have died, right? Perhaps this could be the end…

“Hey, you’re standing in the middle of the street!” a voice in my head shouted. “And that yellow light approaching is about to crash into you in minutes. Can’t you hear it? You have to move to the side. Don’t just stand there. It’s a car! It’s definitely a car and the veil of hale certainly does not help. MOVE!”

Then why wasn’t I moving? Could I be waiting for the car to put an end to this excruciating obstacle race I had started?

I closed my eyes and held my breath as the roaring sound of the car approached.

CentreStage with Jane Risdon: Crime Writer, Photographer and Rock Star’s Wife

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

NEVER has this feature been so aptly named. Today, it is my tremendous pleasure to welcome onto my humble blog the one and only Jane Risdon: crime writer, photographer and bona fide Rock Star’s Wife! It was inevitable, I suppose, that Jane and I were supposed to connect via our blogs and I really, really look forward to sharing with you the guest post of all guest posts. Let’s do this!

I am woman

Jane, hi! It’s so wonderful to have you on my blog today to show you off to my readers. We’ve been chatting offline for months, you and I, and you’ve been a fabulous help with the research for my second and third books ~ my inside source, so to speak. Today, I want to shine the spotlight on you, if that’s okay… Are you sitting comfortably? Is that tea all right for you… What? Oh… of course you can have a glass of wine, so much more civilized. And here’s some nibbles too, couldn’t have chocolate digestives with a nice chilled Pinot. Ready?

Hello Nicky, thanks so much for having me on your blog, which I really enjoy reading, especially the Music Monday features. As your readers are well aware your posts often set me off on one of my rambles about ‘back in the day,’ when I lived a very different life.

Being a Cristal champagne and Riedel Sommeliers Grand Glass kind of girl (trying not to giggle), I’ll have a glass (or two) of the red stuff to oil my little grey cells, so yes thanks, I’ll have some with you – Pinot Noir will be great. I’m not a biscuit eater so anything savoury will be fine. Lovely, thanks! 🙂

I’ve spent the greater part of my life in the Music Business, having married a musician when young, and so my life has not been that conventional even though I was, for the earliest part anyway, working in very conventional institutions; the Diplomatic Service and later the Civil Service.

jane1I joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office having spent some time living in Germany with my parents who working in the Ministry of Defence (British) over there. My then boyfriend was living in England and touring with his band, so we had fleeting opportunities to meet and be together. I applied to the Ministry of Information (the then Press arm of the Government), in hopes of coming home to England and being with him more often. The Civil Service thought I’d better suit the FCO and so I came back to England, to London, at the height of the ‘Swinging Sixties.’ Thus began the next phase of my life which resulted in marriage to my very own ‘rock star.’

Someone had to earn a decent living and I continued working in various departments of the Civil Service throughout our early marriage. Most of the time we lived with the rest of the band, which you may well think was fun – I couldn’t possibly comment. It was an education for an ex convent girl!

Our son came along and when eventually my husband and the band called it a day, he and I decided to go into the Management side of the business. Our work has taken us all over the world working with many famous people and has given us a wonderful experience which will never leave us.

But there came a time when I could no longer ignore doing something I have always longed to do; write. I’d waited long enough to have the time to get on with it. Life on the road is not the best place to find time for oneself and so I decided to concentrate on me for a change. For the last two years this is what I’ve been doing.

Wow! From the civil service to artist management and now crime writing. Your leading lady, Ms. Lavinia Birdsong, also worked in the civil service…in a manner of speaking. What was the inspiration for Ms Birdsong Investigates, your current novel work-in-progress?

Ms Birdsong, Lavinia to her close friends, is actually an ex-MI5 officer and I guess my inspiration for her came from working with various individuals at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. A lot of the ladies working there were of a certain age, unmarried, devoted to their work, and those who worked with Ambassadors and in the overseas Embassies were nearly always a little in love with their bosses.

Lavinia Birdsong is not based on one person but an amalgamation of several of these ladies. I wanted her to be ‘well-bred’ but with a slightly naughty air about her, liking the good things in life, yet down to earth as well, with a hint of mystery. Lavinia is most definitely a Cristal and Riedel sort of person!

Tell us a bit more about Ms Birdsong Investigates ~ give me the three-line pitch.

jane2Ms Birdsong has been ‘voluntarily’ retired from MI5 under somewhat of a cloud, and has taken up residence in the rural village of Ampney Parva in The Vale of The White Horse, Oxfordshire, where she tries to hide from her past and those who might be seeking her; her enemies. She turns her hand to crime writing and spends her time observing her fellow villagers. Within a short space of time she feels something is not right in the 4282-20826village. As she puts her investigative skills to work the village is rocked by two seemingly motiveless murders. Lavinia is in her element doing what she does best, the old juices are flowing, and during her investigations she gets a blast from her past; someone she thought she would never see again.

If Lavinia could be here with us now, how would she sell it?

Posh bird with experience in espionage goes to live with the local yokels and finds it’s not too bad after all. Unable to keep her nose out of other people’s business, she keeps them all under discreet surveillance which eventually sees her investigating murder.

Personally, I love a cracking crime novel and this sounds right up my street. When can we expect to get our hands on it?

Good question Nicky! I’ll have another glug of the red stuff please so I can gird my loins for the answer. Yummy, thanks so much. And I love Twiglets. Thanks.

I have been a while writing about her. I moved house and have had lots of set-backs which have caused me to neglect Ms B on and off for longer than intended. She is not too keen on being ignored and the last time she and I had a discussion about her exploits seeing the light of day, she was a little upset to hear that I had decided to do a bit of re-writing. I am about three quarters of the way through this and we both hope she will be ready soon.

Lavinia keeps reminding me that there is an Agent waiting to read the first three chapters and that I should stop faffing around deciding which three I want to be the first three. I hear her and I understand. However, it is not she who is writing this; I am, and I cannot help it if I get the wobbles every time I think I have the three sorted and ready to send. I shall have to get Ms Birdsong Investigates finished soon because my mother is convinced it will not be published in her lifetime, and anything to rattle her cage is enough to spur me on.

In addition, I have got three other books on the go. I have recently started working on a sort of memoir – WIP title is ‘GaGa in LALA Land,’ and I have plundered it for some of this interview along with some of my photos too.

jane4

Next, I’ve been co-writing a book which I have completed. My co-author is working on her parts as well as two contracted books she needs to get out this year. Our book is not crime and is a departure from my comfort-zone, and it should be with the Publisher later this year. Fingers crossed.

jane5The third book is called ‘God’s Waiting Room,’ and is a humorous, character-driven, observational series of stories….if anyone purchased Telling Tales (anthology) written for The Norfolk Hospice, you will find two stories in there by me, one of which is called ‘The Ghost in the Privy,’ and this is from GWR.

So, then, let’s hear it about Jane Risdon, author. You have done many, many things in your life… I am totally stunned by your bio. If I understand correctly, you were working in the civil service when your husband was really getting into his rock career. At what point, and why, did you make the decision to become “The Rock Star’s Wife”?

Cripes, that’s a question. Well, we met when I was 16. His band had come over from the Channel Islands to record and tour and they ended up in my village, almost next door. This shows you how innocent I was, the band had been in the village for about three months before I even noticed them.

This musician pestered the life out of me, much to my mother’s disgust. She had him down as a long-haired, drug-taking member of the great unwashed brigade. Eventually we went out together, a few weeks before his band went off on tour for ages and about two months before I moved to Germany for three years. Two weeks into our ‘relationship,’ he asked me to marry him. I said ‘yes’, knowing that it would be impossible for years.

Some years and a lot of plane fares, train fares, and ferry trips back to England later, we got round to it. Typical musician-style wedding just the four of us; the bride and groom, a female ‘best-man,’ and a girlfriend as witness with the taxi driver to take photos. It rained throughout proceedings and afterwards he went off on tour and I went back to work. That was almost 44 years ago!

Ooooh, I so want to write that book some time!! What was it like, becoming the manager, touring, recording, doing the industry thing? I bet it was a world apart from the civil service….

Okay, let’s start with management. Artist management is very different to being the artist and being managed. It is a very intimate and personal relationship where the manager is employed by the artist and the artist is under the complete control of the manager. It is not for the faint-hearted. It is gruelingly hard work with no set hours or conditions of work. There aren’t any rules or a guide book telling you ‘how to,’ and you have to make your own contacts and reputation. You never get thanks or credit for anything, but you do get the blame for most things. You spend your life trying to prize your artist’s money from the Royalty collection agencies, Record and Publishing companies and then the rest of your energy trying to prize your own commissions and expenses back from the artist.

All your efforts on behalf of your artist don’t guarantee you, or them, success. The music business is fickle and image, sales and marketing are what counts. Music is way down the list. The artist is a product, the means to shift ‘units.’ It really is a cut-throat business, full of all sorts of scams and under-the-table goings on. When we first began working in Hollywood, they were getting over the Payola scandals where the Record labels had been paying Radio stations to play their artists. If you know anything about Pink Floyd you will know that back in the late 1970’s they nearly lost their whole career due to their record company refusing to pay syndicated Radio for air-play. The Radio stations refused to accept this and would not play ‘Another Brick in the Wall,’ until the record company gave in and paid up; bands like Loverboy and The Who had similar problems. This was how it was back then, and in my experience, not much has changed. The Banking Scandal has nothing on the way the Music business is run. As I mentioned, I’m now writing about our experiences after resisting doing so for years, some of what I am writing here is from this work. You must read it one day if it is ever published and I am not wearing concrete boots somewhere. I haven’t even mentioned ‘The Mob,’ have I?

*Nicky shudders* No, you haven’t! *Whispers* Are you sure you want me to publish this? Moving on swiftly, LOL ~ let’s talk about recording.

Recording is wonderful, my favourite part. I love being involved in creating something from nothing and watching it all take form. From a scrap of paper with scribbled lyrics and a few strums on the guitar or tinkles on a keyboard to a full blown record, the whole process never ceases to amaze and fascinate me.

Apart from working in the studio back here with our artists, we have been very privileged to work with some of the top producers and engineers in the world, in some of the most amazing studios in the world. It is hard to recall all of them here – another glass of ‘vino collapso,’ to whet my whistle would be most appreciated at this juncture.

*Nicky obligingly pours….*

Lovely, thanks. Have we seen off two bottles already? Goodness. Now where were we? Oh yes, recording. As with anything in life, producers work in different ways. Some are musicians, songwriters and engineers as well as arrangers so they are very well-rounded and almost a self-contained unit. Others concentrate on production and may even specialize in a particular type of musical genre or style.

The artists and record producers we managed covered all genres from Rock, Thrash Metal, Pop and Dance, to R&B, Opera and everything in between, so recording their material has always been a fascinating and exciting experience involving their own production as well as that of outside ‘name,’ producers who can bring their special ‘star-power’ to the project.

And recording can be subject to all sorts of power-play. To give you an idea… let’s see. In my article on songwriting for Morgen Bailey’s Guest Blog, I mentioned working with a 14- and 17-year-old duo that not only wrote and performed their own material, they produced it too. We obtained a recording contract for them in America using the album they’d worked on without outside producers. Next thing we know, their label wanted the Vice President of A&R (Artiste and Repertoire) to fly to the UK to supervise final mixes on some of the tracks and to generally ‘stick her oar in.’

This VP of A&R turned up completely unprepared for our freezing weather and the food. She was not a happy woman but she had big ideas and… some….power issues, shall we say. She decided to put her mark on the tracks being mixed and declared that she didn’t like ‘the horns,’ and that they needed to be changed. ‘Which horns?’ we asked, to which she waved her hands around and repeated, ‘the horns.’ We agreed that whilst she went for a long walk in the ‘God awful, freezing f****** village where there wasn’t even an Italian restaurant or decent coffee,’ we would work on fixing ‘the horns.’

jane7Two hours later she returned frozen and grumpy and we put the ‘new’ mixes up for her. She sat solemnly listening and told us that they sounded much better. She accepted the mixes and took the Masters back to Los Angeles with her the next day. We couldn’t stop laughing because nothing at all had been done to the tracks and ‘the horns’ were as they had originally been. This tells you something about the type of mentality we had to deal with.

I think I have possibly gone on too long here – another glass of vino would be nice. I think that your readers can find out more when I publish my book – do you think they will be interested?

Jane, are you kidding? They’ll love this! I know I do!

That wine is delicious, thanks and these Twiglets go down a treat. Nattering is hungry work. Ask away, what next?

What was the highest point, the fondest memory, the best occasion ever you can share with us?

jane8This is so hard to answer as there have been so many. Filming Baywatch, with our artists writing and performing the music for the show and appearing in the series, was amazing because at the time it was the most successful global TV series ever and had over 2 billion viewers a week in 200 countries. It is still on TV somewhere in the world every minute of every day!

Having American Chart hits with a British artist when for years none had been in their charts was a thrill. Finding out that one of our bands was the most-played record on American Rock stations and beat Metallica to the Number One spot on syndicated College radio was especially exciting and satisfying.

Sitting in a cinema and hearing our artist’s songs on a movie soundtrack is awesome, and hearing my own voice doing the narration for In-flight long-haul airline entertainment where our artists had songs played on video throughout flights was a bit strange for me.

We have had some of our artist’s record duets with super-stars from time to time and have toured with them as well. This was exciting and unreal; especially when we have been fans of theirs in the past.

Going to a record company convention on Alcatraz with so many famous artists was awesome. Faith Hill, Stevie Nicks, The Bare Naked Ladies, Michael Peterson, Chris Isaacs – dozens of famous names were there, including our acts. The whole island and prison was closed to the public for the event, ice sculptures with shrimp and oysters held in them, a champagne fountain and all manner of things I forget. A private tour of the cells and a talk by one of the ex-inmates and ex-warders was wonderful. Seeing Al Capone’s cell was fascinating, especially as many years ago my husband had met his get-away driver, Blackie, on a cruise of the Mediterranean and spent a lot of time with him.

Hearing my husband and his band played on Radio Luxemburg, British Forces Radio and Radio One whilst living in Germany was amazing and totally out of the blue. I put the radio on and there they were almost every time I tuned in. His band charting in the UK for the first time was something special too.

Nicky, I cannot think of any one of these which is more special than the other, really – don’t forget I have many years to trawl through!!

I know from our offline chats and your many interviews on other blogs that you have met pretty much every rock star under the sun, and what I wouldn’t have given to be with you at the time! Can you tell us a little bit about what these stars are like behind the scenes? Do the rock stars really paint their hotel rooms black and pour champagne out of the window?

Not wanting to get sued by any artist or hotel chain which may be reading this, I have to be careful. There are tales I could relate about quite a few well-known names but perhaps I will get the nerve to do it another time, or in my book. Bands these days are a lot better behaved, unlike the bands from my era. No more Rolls Royce’s in the pool or wrecked hotel rooms…

But if it’s an anecdote you’re after again…I mentioned the Thrash band earlier. They had an American record and publishing deal and they recorded in the USA and toured Europe and the USA mainly. In one New York hotel where we stayed, we were on about the 17th floor; every day for two weeks without fail, the band would get in the elevator and they would all jump up and down, because as the floor moved away and they rose in the air they were sort of weightless. On the Sunday we were due to fly to Los Angeles, we all got in the elevator with the record company executive and off they went, jumping again. Only this time there was a dreadful creaking and groaning and suddenly a snapping noise, and the elevator started to fall, but at an angle. It came to a sudden halt and we swung around a little and then it went silent and still. The band were in shock, the record label guy looked as if he were going to pass out, and I expected us to crash down the remainder of the floors any second.

The intercom in the elevator sprang to life with anxious voices asking if we were all right and was anyone hurt. After several minutes of conversation it was made clear that, it being Sunday, they had to find an elevator technician to come out and repair it while we had to sit tight and wait. Meantime the record label guy was becoming claustrophobic and having a panic attack, the band was getting scared and too hot, and I was trapped with the lot of them.

Five hours and a lot of sweat and loss of oxygen later, there was movement beside our elevator and a hole was cut through from an adjoining platform, which was lower than us. There was a massive gap with a view of about thirteen floors below. ‘Come on down,’ seemed to be the general idea. No-one wanted to go first. After a lot of discussion I took the lead – I cannot describe the terror as I stepped down and across that deep void as both the platform and the elevator swung around. In the end, we all got out and had a fawning hotel manager and team kissing our backsides trying to prevent us suing them, while I was constantly shutting the band up as they felt the need to explain what they had done. We didn’t need the hotel suing us!

I could go on with more examples……but you need to read my book for the rest.

I certainly shall! What about you, while all of this was going on. Wife and mother ~ how did you combine all of that with the rock-star life? What was the toughest challenge the Risdon family faced?

When my husband was in his band, we had long periods of separation, and after our son came along that could be especially hard for us all. I guess being away from our home for long periods, sometimes years at a time when we were on the road or working over-seas was hard. At the time we were too busy to notice that we lost touch with friends and family. Often our son came with us as he worked with our bands too; he toured with them and other bands when he was older. It has helped him no end in so many ways.

Finally, writing. At long last, I’ve heard you say, I have the time to write. You are in one place, settled, you can focus on that dream of yours. Why crime? Why not… romance? Or biography? What drives you to your desk every morning?

Well, Nicky, I am not really settled but I am going to be here for a little while longer. We shall see what happens later this year. Why crime and not romance or biography? Well, our biography is being worked on by me as I have mentioned and this interview contains some excerpts from it, so that is now a reality.

*Nicky squeals with glee*

I don’t think I’m a romantic person in the loved-up sense of the word. I’ve worked around men all my life and I guess any romance attached to the opposite sex has been well and truly killed off by the little buggers….not counting my husband of course! I know he will read this.

I can do romance if it is like the romance of Du Maurier and Frenchman’s Creek, Jamaica Inn and Rebecca, but I cannot write (or read) ‘our eyes met over the operating table,’ or ‘his muscles rippled like the start of a sexual tsunami,’ type of romance. I am not a pink and fluffy person though I do think I am warm and caring, just not that girlie….not butch either in case you are wondering!! So writing romance has never crossed my mind…..but you never know.

Crime excites me because it is what I have always been drawn to for some reason. When I was little, I used to read adventures like ‘Biggles,’ and ‘Kidnapped,’ – that type of book, and later Leslie Chartres, Mickey Spillane, Frederick Forsythe and Le Carré. I love all the forensics and research and the deviousness of the human mind, so writers like Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen inspire me and get me to my desk. I want to be that successful and write books that change lives, like their books changed mine.

I love solving clues and putting twists in a story to mislead and confuse, and I love being misled and confused by other writers. I may well have been a forensic pathologist or a profiler if I had my chance to choose a career again!

Wow. I had no idea! I’m with you on the loving-solving-puzzles front but I couldn’t handle the blood and the gore. So, nearly done. Just the fun bit now….quick-fire questions….

Bon Jovi or Queen? Hmm….there hangs a tale…..I would say both.

Wine or beer? Wine, never touched beer; hate the smell.

Crisps or chocolate? Neither Alright, Twiglets all the way then.

Tree book or ebook? Both

Car or plane? Both Really? No preference?

Writing by hand, or typing? Typing

Plotting or pantsing? Pantsing

Mountains or sea? Both. No way! You have wrecked my life-long theory that everyone is either a ‘sea’ or a ‘mountain’ person!

Sex On The Beach or Kir Royal? Both *Nicky stores this detail for future reference*

Jane, thank you so much for being here today, it’s been such fun and I hope you enjoyed yourself too!

Thanks so much for having me here, Nicky, and I do hope I have not over-stayed my welcome (you haven’t!) and driven you all to drink (well, we did drink quite a lot but it was fun!). I did warn you, but you said go for it and I – well, went for it! How is your head? Three bottles of wine is not bad going I think. It was ace!

Well, ladies and gentlemen, what a scoop! What an article! I say, hurry up and publish that biography, Jane! If you want to find out more about Jane, visit her here:

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

CentreStage showcases fabulous authors from around the world and today it is my great pleasure to welcome fellow German expat, Barbara Winkes. We met on Twitter, got chatting and the rest is history! Barbara is here to introduce her second novel, Winter Storm, the sequel to Autumn Leaves. She’s also hosting a Q&A with her heroine, Rebecca, so read on~you’ll be intrigued!

Winter Storm

WinterStorm

For Callie and Rebecca, finding each other was the easy part. In the  follow-up to Autumn Leaves, Rebecca and Callie have made a commitment to their relationship. New challenges arise as Rebecca continues to find  her identity. Callie is confronted with an ex she would have preferred  to avoid. Nicole wants to be back together with her, and she uses all  her manipulative skills to achieve that goal. With a new minister in  town and an unexpected threat, Rebecca and Callie will face even bigger  trials. How much can their new-found love take?

Interview with Rebecca

Rebecca’s life in the small town of Autumn Leaves changed drastically when she fell in love with her neighbour~a woman! Since that revelation, she’s had to make some tough decisions, and we’ll be talking about them today. Thanks to Nicky for having us on CentreStage!

Nicky says: I’m delighted to have you and Rebecca here today. Take it away, Barbara, I look forward to this chat…

When did you move to Autumn Leaves or did you grow up here? What is the best thing about living in a small town and what is the worst?

David and I moved to Autumn Leaves shortly after we got married. That was seventeen years ago. I wasn’t so sure about the town at first, but we quickly made friends and thought it was a great place for children to grow up. We were mostly right about that…Living in a small town is a little like high school. If you can fit in and make friends, you’ll be okay. It’s when you stop playing by the rules that you’ll learn who your friends are. The difference is that in high school, you can’t just walk away. Callie and I probably could, but this is our home now, take it or leave it.

What kind of childhood did you have?

It was pretty quiet. I was never one to make waves, so I didn’t get into any serious trouble. I always dreamed of a house full of love and laughter, rather than rules. I wanted my kids to know that I love them without making them have to guess. My parents wanted me to have a good life, but there wasn’t much talk about feelings.

Growing up, what were the dreams you had for yourself?

Most of all, I wanted to be with someone who loves me, and have a family with that person. Does that sound silly?

Not at all! What dreams do you have for your daughters?

I want them to be happy with the choices they make in life. I want them to be happy, period.

What was your first impression of Callie Bryan?

My first impression was, oh my, I’m in trouble! Seriously, I wasn’t actually that insightful. I thought we could be friends. I thought she was beautiful.

Does it matter what your friends think of you?

Of course it matters. You’re friends in the first place because you share some of the same beliefs, opinions and interests. I was disappointed and scared when Betty reacted the way she did, because she’d been in my life for sixteen years. If the friendship is for real, you try to overcome difference.

When did you know your life was about to change?

Honestly, I knew long before I was able to admit to myself what was going on. My family, my home was the center of my life for so long. If there was anything else, I didn’t think about it, I didn’t want to see it. I found excuses to spend more and more time with Callie. Sometimes I didn’t have any excuse…I knew I had to do something, and I was scared of the consequences.

Do you have any regrets?

I wish I had been brave enough to face the truth earlier. I didn’t want to end up all alone…I guess that was selfish and it resulted in people I love getting hurt. I regret that a lot.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

I hope that after all the changes, life will calm down for a bit, for my girls, Callie and me. We have definitely earned it.

Nicky says: You certainly have! I am so moved. I have to confess  that I have yet to catch up with your full story but I will do so post-haste, I am thoroughly intrigued. There’s a lot of courage and romance in this interview and I’d love to find out more about you and Callie. Thank you so much for chatting with Barbara so candidly ‘live on air’ today ~ you rock! Maybe next time, you can bring Callie too! 🙂

PS: The author has not promised calmer waters yet, as there are more seasons to come, and a secret to uncover…

CentreStage with Harvey Black: Cover Reveal for The Red Effect @black_author

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

Today, it is my great pleasure to host fellow Loveahapyending.com Lifestyle author, the one and only Harvey Black. Harvey shares with us the cover reveal for his upcoming novel, The Red Effect, and tells us a little about his writing… Take it away, Harvey!

Cover Reveal – The Red Effect

“Today, West German imperialism is United States’ chief ally in Europe in aggravating world tension. West Germany is increasingly becoming the seat of the war danger, where revenge-seeking passions are running high… The policy pursued by the Federal Republic of Germany is being increasingly determined by the same monopolies that brought Hitler to power.

The Rhineland politicians fancy that once they get the atomic bomb, frontier posts will topple and they will be able to achieve their cherished desire of carving up the map of Europe again and taking revenge for defeat in the second world war.

One of the most ominous factors endangering peace is the bilateral military alliance that is taking shape between the ruling circles of the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany. This factor remains an objective of unflagging attention.”

The Cold War and Nitroglycerin had one thing in common; both were stable when circumstances allowed. But, when something rocks the boat, or events are overtaken by Incidents that get out of control, the status quo is lost. The consequence is an eruption that is both violent and lethal.

The Cold War trilogy will trace the Cold War as it simmers, overheats and eventually turns East against West. The outcome? Start with ‘The Red Effect’ out in April, followed by ‘The Black Effect’ and ‘The Blue Effect’.

And here it is, the star of the day:
The Red Effect

RedEffect72dpi

1983: The Cold War has been in existence since the end of World War Two. Although tensions have always been fraught between the Western nations and the members of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact, common sense prevailed.

Until, as a consequence of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, the shooting down of a Korean passenger aircraft in 1983, and the relentless build up of Soviet military strength, everything is about to change.

In a panoramic novel, readers travel from centres of power to the front lines – a war is brewing and events are happening at every angle. Is the Cold War about to turn hot? Can NATO forces endure a mass strike by thousands of Soviet tanks? Can the West survive?

Follow the series of gripping events that culminated in ‘The Red Effect’, in the first instalment of Harvey Black’s Cold War trilogy.

The Harvey Black Interview

Cold War 9 Harvey Black 039

Harvey, tell us… What started you writing?

I have wanted to write a novel since I was a teenager. Enthralled by Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, E.E. Doc Smith’s Lensmen series and Edgar Rice Burroughs, I felt sure my first would be of the SF genre.

Joining the army changed all of that and my passion now is for military history.  ‘Devils with Wings’, a military thriller, based around the adventures of two young Fallschirmjäger paratroopers during the early part of World War II, is a fictionalised adventure based on the famous assault on the impregnable Belgian fortress, Eben Emael.

What makes your books so special?

I try to visit the locations in person. For Devils with Wings: Silk Drop, I walked the routes, up to 18 miles, in Crete, during the hottest part of the day, where my characters would have marched. Most of the descriptions in the novel, of what they can see, was written in situ.

I have just finished the first of my Cold War trilogy of novels, The Red Effect. Having spent a number of years in British Army Intelligence during the Cold War years, I have a deep insight into the undercurrents and flashpoints that occurred between the Soviet Union and the West.

What authors inspire you?

I have number of authors I follow, ranging from Stephen Leather, Simon Scarrow, Bernard Corwall, Gerald Seymor to Ian Rankin. Since I have been writing my own novels, I have played a close interest in newer authors, such as S.J.A.Turney and Stephen England. I am currently reading ‘Marias’ Mules’ IV.

Reading as well as writing, you are one busy man. What are your plans going forward?

There will be ten books in the ‘Devils with Wings’ series, Book 4, will be published towards the end of the year. The Red Effect now finished, I will focus on Book 2, The Black Effect, where the confrontation between East and West continues.

Any thoughts on what you might do differently next time?

More structure to my chapters in advance, focus on my characterisation and improving my dialogue, key to keeping the story moving.

Would you share your lessons learnt so far?

Edit, edit, edit! Even when you have your editing done professionally, you still need to check your manuscript again and again.

Wow, thank you for sharing your thoughts on your writing experience, Harvey, it’s been a real pleasure having you on CentreStage today.

Out in April – The Red Effect.

Or about a litle bit of madness here and there! Today, it is my enormous pleasure to welcome the lovely, quirky and quite outstanding Sheryl Browne.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Sheryl in person on several occasions, and I can tell you, there’s no one chattier, warmer, more welcoming and more entertaining. Sheryl, it’s an honour to have you here today and I’ll hand the floor over to you now… Take it away!

Celebrating Sheryl’s
FOURRTH Book Launch

Hi Nicky!

Thank you so much for inviting me along today and helping me launch A Little Bit of Madness, my fourth book published by Safkhet Publishing!

Rather than waffle on – as I tend to, with Nicky’s kind permission, I’ve included a blurb and brief excerpt below.  I do hope you enjoy!

A Little Bit of Madness

Cover Front

No rest for the wicked
Saving Charlton hall will burrow into your heart.

Celia Summers, intrepid mother of two, is too cuddly for sweatpants, she suspects. But then, her class at The Harbour Rest Home are similarly clad. Celia loves her work as an art therapist. She’s proud that she gives her elderly independents something to look forward to, even if her partner, Martin, disapproves of her efforts. He also has other things on his mind – telling complicated lies to Celia so he can sell Charlton Hall, his mum’s house, to pay off his debts.

Meanwhile, Celia fights to secure gallery space for her geriatric charges’ artwork, and to keep The Harbour from being closed. She’s even ready to abseil from a church steeple to bring attention to the plight of her old people, no matter that she might fall and end up splattered all over the flagstones. When she does fall, however, it’s much more painful – in love with PC Alex Burrows. Will he be her white-knight-in-blue and ride to her rescue?

A Little Bit of a Mad Excerpt….

‘I wasn’t talking about the Porsche owner.’ Celia glanced at the driver, who, competing with an idling bus in the next lane, revved his engine even louder. ‘I was talking about PC Plod. What’s he doing?’

‘His duty, I believe,’ Eleanor informed her. ‘He’s just told Annie White he’ll have to charge her with causing an obstruction.’

‘Jobs-worth,’ Celia huffed. He could look as exasperated as he liked, she wasn’t about to sympathise with someone who’d sided with the enemy.

‘Whoops-a-daisy. Now he’s looking a bit put out.  The colonel has just told him he’s not orf duty either and plonked himself down,’ Eleanor observed.

Uh, oh. Celia snuck a peek.

‘Da-ad.’ Alex pushed his cap back, exasperated. ‘Would you please stop this, before I’m in it up to my neck?’

‘No can do, lad. Sorry. Can’t let the chaps down. Wouldn’t be cricket.’

‘Christ, Dad, this isn’t cricket! It stopping traffic and it’s against the law.’

‘So should making people homeless be, m’boy. Can’t move, lad. Principle at stake, y’see?‘

‘And so is my bloody job! I have to move you on, Dad. Please?’

The colonel notched his chin up and stayed put.

‘Right,’ Alex sighed, running his hand over his neck and motioning to his partner. ‘Sorry, Dad,’ he said, as they heaved the colonel cross-legged from the road. ‘It’s my duty and all that.’

‘Damned outrage! Contravention of civil liberties!’ Colonel Burrows blustered.

‘No Dad, I think you’ll find preventing people from going about their business is a contravention of civil liberties.’ Alex gave Celia a disparaging glance as he “escorted” his father to a waiting police van.

Celia reciprocated and turned away, but quickly turned back as she heard Alex  mutter, ‘Ouch! Shit! May, for Christ’s sake!’

‘Unhand him,’ said May, beating Alex about the head with one removed trainer, whilst someone else did banner duty. ‘Put him down, I say, sir, or I shall … ’

Celia blinked astonished as May, having failed to deter Alex from removing the colonel with her lethal weapon, resorted to the use of another. ‘Oh, God, she’s going to bite him.’

‘Gum him, you mean.’ Eleanor placed a hand over her eyes.

Celia placed one over her mouth. Don’t let him drop the colonel, she prayed as May, in the absence of teeth, pinched Alex instead.

‘Jesus.’ Alex winced. So did Celia and Eleanor. ‘That had to hurt,’ said Celia.

‘Definitely,’ said Eleanor. ‘Delicate area, that.’

‘I’ve had just about enough of this,’ Alex growled as he returned from depositing his protesting father in the police van. ‘May, that was below the belt!’ May, who’d trotted over to join Eleanor and Celia, flushed from her cheeks to her now bare feet. ‘Assaulting an officer of the law is—’

‘Against the law,’ Eleanor suggested helpfully.

Alex glared at her. ‘A criminal offence.’

‘Ooh, smouldering eyes,’ Eleanor swooned. ‘Doesn’t he look gorgeous when he’s angry?’

Alex ignored her and turned to May. ‘Patrol car, May.’ He nodded her towards his car. ‘Sit in it, and stay in it.’

‘Oh, lovely.’ May trotted off, happy as a lark. ‘I do love flashing lights,’ she said, climbing into the patrol car—then neatly out the other side.

‘God give me strength!’ Alex threw his cap on the ground, then raced after her. Winifred Bailey though, had other ideas. ‘Gotcha,’ she smiled triumphantly, sticking Alex with her knitting needle. ‘That should teach you to pick on someone your own size.’ She went back to her knitting, as Alex fell over clutching his thigh.

‘Oh my God!’ Celia made to leap up.

‘Stay,’ Eleanor instructed her. ‘He’s all right. He’s up on all fours.’

Celia looked at her, appalled. ‘Eleanor, how can you be so heartless? He might be bleeding to death. He might have tetanus.’

‘Years of practice,’ said Eleanor. ‘He’s not bleeding to death. He’s up and limping and he can get a shot for the latter.’

‘I’m sure he’ll feel much better for knowing it,’ Celia muttered, and snuck another glance at him. Oh Lord, poor Alex. ‘He is limping quite badly, Eleanor,’ she said, chewing on her lower lip.

‘Tough. He shouldn’t have entered the fray, should he? In any case,  Alex and his uniformed chums  started the fray, so I wouldn’t waste too much energy feeling sorry for him, if I were you.’

‘No. No, I won’t.’ Celia went back to reciting reasons why she shouldn’t feel sorry for him. He’d been horrible about Martin—again. There were a hundred reasons why she shouldn’t dash over to make sure he was all right.

Well, one anyway. He was a great strapping man. He wasn’t going to be felled by a knitting needle.

No, she wouldn’t go to him. Her loyalties lay here where she sat. Her chin jutted defiantly as she sat a bit firmer, and a bit colder.

‘Oh dear,’ Eleanor said, keeping her up to speed, ‘he’s looking embarrassed now. Annie White’s just told his partner if he’s intending to have it away with her, he’ll have to handcuff her first. Don’t look now, but I think our knight in tarnished armour is coming over to have it away with us, if you’ll excuse the expression. But of course, you’re not looking, are you?’ She noted the blush to Celia’s cheek. ‘Or talking? He’s obviously playing havoc with your emotions.’

‘I beg your … ’ Celia blushed scarlet. ‘He is not.’

‘Hmm? I beg to differ, Celia, but I think he must be.’ Eleanor sat up straighter as Alex got nearer.

‘I don’t have any feelings for Alex! Well, not those kind of feelings.’ Celia caught a glimpse of blue serge and sat up straight alongside Eleanor. ‘I just—’

‘Nor he for you by the look on his face. Miserable I’d call him, a man torn asunder by conflicting emotions. He’s in denial, of course. Could never admit, with his troubled past and you about to marry Martin, that he—’

‘Eleanor, shut up!’ Celia hissed as Alex cast a shadow over them.

Eleanor did as bid, eyeing Celia with some sort of private satisfaction. ‘Alex!’ she exclaimed, ‘how unlovely to see you. Is it our turn to be carried off by you?’

‘Must be your lucky day.’ Alex crouched in front of Celia, a smile playing about his mouth despite wounds to his body and pride. ‘Ladies, would you do you me the honour of allowing me to escort you to the pavement?’

‘Thank you, but no thank you.’ Celia growled. She folded her arms, adamant she wouldn’t be moved, emotionally or otherwise. ‘Bugger off, Alex.’

‘Your wish is my command,’ Alex sighed and stood up. ‘As soon as I’ve done my job. Celia, you either walk to the pavement or you get carried to the police van. It’s your call.’

‘Do you know something,’ she said, ignoring Alex in favour of talking to Eleanor, ‘I think he’s the limit.’ She nodded towards the guy in the Porsche who was now leaning on his horn. Probably got an ultra-important meeting to get to, she seethed quietly. Far more important to the future of the world than people who hadn’t got much of a future and would probably be better off dead anyway. ‘Right,’ she said, getting to her feet.

‘Good decision,’ Alex said, relieved.

‘I think it’s about time I showed the heckler-horn-blower my placard up close.’

‘Not.’ Alex tugged in a terse breath as Celia strode past him. ‘Jesus Christ! Celia, come back!’
