To eat them…or not to eat them?

Oooops!

You know when you get that ‘duh’ moment the very second you hit a button you weren’t supposed to hit?

With many apologies to my regular followers and subscribers… I accidentally hit ‘publish’ on my upcoming Music Monday post before I had set the correct date. So while, no doubt, you have an alert about the post (“Trying Not To Love You”) in your inbox, if you click on it, Wordpress will tell you the post cannot be found. That’s because I scheduled it properly now…for Monday.

My bad, please forgive me! Have a rocking weekend, and I’ll see you back here on Monday.

Yours in rock,

~Nicky

Gutter Ballet! Music Monday guest post by Hugh Sherry @shug1963

It’s Music Monday!

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend? It’s the school half-term holiday and guess what… I chanced upon someone offering an excellent guest suggestion to take over this holiday Music Monday. Yup, we connected on Twitter via Planet Rock, we got chatting and… here he is!

A huge thank you Hugh Sherry for introducing me to this brilliant band and awesome tune.  Thought-provoking if slightly gruesome lyrics (you know I’m a sucker for lyrics) too ~ in a roundabout way, not inappropriate for the upcoming Halloween festivities.

Have a listen and let me know what you think!

Conker Craft!

Happy half term! I thought I’d bring you a little photo post today about a classic German autumn pastime: making conker models. If you like getting crafty yourself, or if you need to entertain the kids, this is a fast, relatively un-messy, and intensely satisfying activity.  Be sure to help the kids with making the holes, and if you want your models to last while the conkers begin to dry out, you might want to apply a little glue to the sticks.

You need: a pile of conkers; a pair of scissors or a little screwdriver for making holes; toothpicks or matchsticks for making limbs

Carefully pierce the conker with your scissors or screwdriver. You might want to swivel your implement around for a nice round hole. Be sure to supervise or help young kids because those conkers are slippy and you don't want any holes in fingers or tables! :-)

Empty Rooms

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

I hope you all had a great weekend! I’m still recovering from the ‘rock chick’ reveal of last Friday ~ what a reaction! I never thought you’d all get so excited on my behalf and join in with the voting fun in quite such large numbers. But I thank you all, you truly made me feel like a rock star! 🙂

Many of you will know that I’m working on my next full-length novel, titled Fallen For Rock. It features professional high-flyer Emily, who is anything but a rock chick. Owing to her disdain for all things rock, she’s made quite a hash out of her relationship with aspiring rock singer Nate and she’s just discovering… well, let’s say she might have made a mistake.

I was listening to Planet Rock in between bouts of writing last week, and this song came up. The lyrics don’t quite fit in every regard, but the mood…oh the mood is perfect for the opening of Fallen For Rock.

Moreover, I had flashbacks to my own life so vivid and unexpected that I’m still reeling. In particular, I see myself in the car with my then boyfriend, driving through the night towards France, and seeing the sun coming up over the horizon. He was asleep in the passenger seat***, but I was singing along to that song, and it struck a chord, even though I couldn’t figure out there and then why it would, or should. Ha! The power of music, right?

Anyway, sit back and enjoy the legacy of the one and only Gary Moore!

So ~ what’s your instant response to Empty Rooms? Have you ever had this…empty kind of feeling?

***If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll remember my post about not driving in good company. And that totally applies. However, for a very short period of about 12 months, I did actually make use of my driving license, LOL. And this  memory harks back to that time… #JustSaying

Revealing My ‘True Colours’ ~ A New Likeness for the Ultimate Rock Chick Author

This is what happens when a professional image team gets on your case….

An Image Snafu?

Says my bio: Nicky Wells is your ultimate rock chick author.
Says Cameron, my publicist, “Do you reckon maybe you should, you know, look the part a bit more?”
Says me, “What do you mean, look the part? You know how much I love and breathe rock!”
Says Cameron, “I do. But people who don’t know you, won’t.”

Hm. Point taken, I suppose. What to do about that, beyond Music Monday and my eternal ramblings about all things rock? Oh, I know. A new author photo.  the ultimate rock chick likeness! YES! It was about time I had some rock-star fun again.

Hey, Hey, I want to be a Rock Star!

So. Arrange another photo shoot down Bristol-way with ace photographer team, Deborah and Simon Smith, pack the family in the car, and off we go. Last Saturday, we set up the studio, got organised, and got snapping. Between them, Deborah and Simon took well over 500 photos of me in all sorts of arrangements, ranging from the sublime to the outright…hilarious. Loud music and wind machines featured heavily at one point, as did many a laugh and exasperated snort, not to mention endless cups of tea (wine and beer came later) and a truck load of chocolate. The result? See for yourself.

We even had themed mugs. #RockStarService

Give it up for a really special guest today… the one and only Suzy Turner and her latest Chick Lit delight, Forever Fredless!

Suzy is a woman of many talents. We met on Twitter (or was it Facebook?) and have been chatting ever since. Suzy simply loves networking, and you can usually find her blogging and promoting authors other than herself… to the exclusion of herself! Yup! So when I got an email saying, “HELP! In all this blogging, I completely forgot to think about promoting Forever Fredless”… well, what could I do but say, come on round and the stage is yours? So without further ado, take it away, Suzy!

Forever Fredless ~ The Blurb!

Kate Robinson has spent the past two decades yearning to find her soul mate, the boy she found and then lost during a family holiday.

Shortly after her twenty-eighth birthday, however, she inherits a fortune from an old family friend and becomes something of an overnight celebrity. Can her new-found fame lead her to him after all this time?

EXCERPT

Thank God for anti-perspirant, I thought as I sat on the couch and waited for the countdown to begin. I clutched at my hands until they were white and looked across at the two people sitting opposite, both completely at ease in front of the cameras.

Five, four, three, two, one…

‘Welcome back to this morning’s edition of Good Morning GB,’ announced Ireland Rothschild, the blonde-haired, blue eyed darling of morning TV.

‘I’m here with Fergus O’Reilly and we’ve a special guest with us this morning. None other than Britain’s love-struck multi-millionaire, Kate Robinson. ‘Welcome, Kate,’ she said with a dazzling smile aimed more towards the camera than at me.

As my cheeks began to heat up, I was so grateful to the make-up artist, who had insisted on caking on the foundation before the show had started. In fact, I had so much make-up on that I was hoping once I’d removed it, nobody would recognise me when I headed to the airport in my now rather stupidly chosen car. I couldn’t exactly blend in driving a pink Mini could I?

‘Good morning,’ I whispered shyly.

Fergus grinned back at me, tilting his head as if he was about to speak to a child. ‘Now, tell us, Kate dear, how does it feel to never have to worry about money ever again?’ he asked, his toothpaste advert  teeth twinkling beneath the heat of the studio lights.

‘Erm, well, I guess it’s… erm, kind of… erm,’ I felt so bloody stupid. Great time for my brain to stop working. ‘I – erm. Great,’ I nodded. ‘Great, really great.’ Idiot.

Ireland glanced across at her grey-haired colleague and pouted before nodding. ‘Tell us how you knew this man. This,’ she glanced down at the iPad on her lap and continued, ‘Samuel?’

I cleared my throat and lifted my head, feeling like my brain was back in action. ‘He was a very good friend of the family, some years ago,’ I answered.

‘Just a friend? Why did he leave you all his money and his property?’ asked Fergus.

‘He didn’t have any family and I guess you could say that my mother and I were the closest he ever had to a family.’

‘Isn’t that lovely?’ pouted Ireland. ‘You certainly are a lucky woman. But what about your mother? Didn’t she receive any of his inheritance?’

‘No,’ I said before swallowing hard. ‘My mother lives a rather… nomadic lifestyle, in Africa. She doesn’t want any of it. All she asked of me was to donate a sum to charity which, of course, I have done.’

‘She lives in Africa? A nomadic lifestyle? That sounds intriguing. Perhaps we should interview her one of these days,’ laughed Ireland and Fergus together.

‘Have you splashed out on anything since receiving your inheritance back in June?’ they asked, leaning forward eagerly awaiting my answer.

‘Yes I have actually. I bought a car and a new house.’

‘Well good for you, Kate. But now, most of us are curious about this boy you lost. Tell us about him?’

Oh no. Why did I agree to this?

Taking a deep breath, I knew I had no choice. Several articles had been printed since the one in Liberty; everyone wanted to know more and nobody was going to leave me alone until I told them everything.

‘He was just a boy who I had a connection with when I was much, much younger. It was at Skegness. At an afternoon disco for kids. I was dancing and I felt someone touch my back and when I turned around there he was.  The most beautiful boy I’d ever seen,’ I said, stopping and smiling as I reminisced. ‘It was one of the happiest memories of my life.’

Sighing, I continued, ‘We just looked at each other and it was like everything else just disappeared into the background. We stood staring, for what seemed like ages. I could barely move. And then, almost as soon as it had begun, my dad appeared and took me away. I couldn’t do anything as we walked to the car. I looked around for the boy but he was gone. And then, just as we were driving away, I turned around in my seat and there he was. He had a daffodil in his hand. I always assumed he’d gone to pick it for me, but that’s just a childish fantasy, I guess. The whole thing is probably nothing but a childish fantasy, really.’

Ireland was very carefully dabbing at her eyes with a tissue, pretending to be moved, while Fergus smiled sadly.

‘What a beautiful story, Kate. I don’t believe for one second that this is a childish fantasy. It’s romantic and beautiful,’ Ireland said.

‘Now, tell us, Kate. Why did you call him Fred?’ asked Fergus.

Smiling, I explained about the Right Said Fred song, just as the music began in the background.

‘What a wonderful tale. Thank you, Kate, for joining us today. It’s been a pleasure having you with us to share your story,’ said Fergus.

‘Thank you,’ I whispered before the camera moved back to Ireland as she straightened her skirt and looked alluring. ‘Do you remember this moment in time?’ she asked. ‘Are you the elusive Fred? We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us at…’

Before I could hear anything else, I was ushered off the couch and back behind the scenes where Jo stood, waiting patiently for me, with open arms.

Thanks so much, Suzy, for stopping by here today and telling us about Forever Fredless. I love the cover, the title, the concept and the excerpt had me gasping for more. Talk about the killer hook!  🙂

Have you got a FRED in your life? Someone who you had a magical connection with that was sadly lost? Go on, you can tell us, we won’t share your secret!

My Fred? You want to know about my Fred? But you already know all about my FREDs. One’s called Jon, and one’s called Joey. LOL!

Oh, you mean the real one, the one that got away? Well, his name was Danny. We dated for three blissful weeks. He was the coolest boy in town, complete with black floppy hair and cool American dad. (Don’t forget I grew up in Germany, so this was really way cool). I was fourteen. He was a little older. We were a match made in heaven until one day, he stopped calling me. Just like that. End of story. See. Easy. You can share yours, too! And maybe, if we say pretty please, Suzy will let us in on hers????? 🙂

Life Won’t Wait

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Happy Monday! It’s the first Monday in October, and I’m in a mellow, positive, and dramatic kind of mood all at once. There’s something about the leaves turning and the early morning fogs rolling in… There’s something about Halloween at the end of the month and All Saints’ the following day that makes me think about life, time passing, and opportunities that need taking ~ now! ~ because they won’t recur. I’ve been having these talks with the kids too. You know, life ain’t a dress rehearsal, Carpe Diem, and so on. Make the most out of your every day.

So here’s the perfect song from one who knows.

What’s your Carpe Diem song?
Have a great week and remember to Seize The Day!

Write what you know, right? Well, I recorded a single once!

It’s no secret I love my rock music. But did you know I had a go at making a record…well, recording a single, once?

Following in Queen’s Footsteps

In May 2010, a fabulous group of choir friends decided to make a very unique wedding gift for one of our tenors. A suitable rock song sprang to my mind, and I adapted the lyrics to suit the happy couple. Someone located the backing track for the song, and we were all systems go. Before anyone could chicken out, I booked us into The London Recording Studios (aka Brick Lane Studios ~ the very place were Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody!) for an entire Sunday, and off we went recording, kids, husband and all in my case.

We arrived at 10 a.m. to meet with the sound engineer and concoct an action plan. Owing to a rather wide geographic dispersion, we hadn’t had time to come together for an advance practice. We were simply going to take our respective lines and… wing it.

A Steep Learning Curve…

The first attempt wasn’t great. We gathered round and had a go at belting the song out. The sound man looked somewhat dismayed but put on a brave face. Undaunted, we took a half hour to regroup and practice. Our second attempt was more promising, and the sound man came into his own. He suggested an iterative approach to laying down the track and became our quasi-director/producer.

First of all, we recorded the chorus together, several times. Then we recorded the chorus again, adding a little spontaneous harmony here or there.

“You’re On. On Your Own.”

The next step was individual recording of individual lines. Uh-huh, you read that right. The studio emptied as everyone quickly filed out, leaving me holding the music and evidently having the first go. Well, the whole thing was my idea…Gulp.

What, really? You're all leaving me here to go first?

What, really? You’re all leaving me here to go first?

Recording individual lines was a weird and wonderful experience. The sound man played me the song ‘so far’ through the head phones, and I had to erupt into song at the right moments. As I was first, there were a lot of instrumentals and no vocals other than the chorus. I had three or four goes at my lines (thoroughly enjoying myself!), and then we swapped to the next person.

*sings* ...got his tickets now he's on his way-ay...

*sings* …got his tickets now he’s on his way-ay…

Mixing It Up Before Mixing It Down!

Back in the mixing room, the sound man had the studio sound on speakers, so as the next person recorded her lines, I could hear her, and my lines, and the chorus. And so it went on, bit by bit.

Slides and faders, buttons and dials... and the all-important computer. He seemed to be doing a million things at once ~ it was truly fascinating.

Slides and faders, buttons and dials… and the all-important computer. He seemed to be doing a million things at once ~ it was truly fascinating.

When we were done individually, we trooped in together for more backing tracks and tweaks. At this point, my then five-year-old decided he’d quite like a go, so we let him! He had his own little starring moment in the last chorus.

Oh yeah, he's having a go-ooooo!

Oh yeah, he’s having a go! (See that Paddington bear clutched under his arm? That’s for courage!)

He got the thumbs up from the sound man... which has me insanely proud. LOL!

He got the thumbs-up from the sound man… which made me insanely proud. LOL!

After six hours of recording, including an impromptu lunch from the local pizza delivery place (boy, did we feel like the real deal, hanging in the studio with pizza and drinks!), the sound man dismissed us for a couple of hours while he got on with mixing, mastering, and mix-down. When we returned to the studio, the song was as finished as it was going to get after one day’s work with no previous practice. We were mighty pleased!

So… I Wrote What I Knew

The whole experience was exhilarating, exciting and totally mind-blowing. I’d love to play you the result but owing to licensing restrictions on the backing track, I can’t. Maybe one day, I’ll get to make a real single and then you’ll hear all about it, I promise.

So when Sophie suddenly gets to be in the studio with Dan… when she records, and starts mixing… well, let’s just, I’d had a tiny little taste of the action myself, and it inspired me no end. Write what you know, they say…
