Twinkle, twinkle, my blog got a star!

I’ve been given a star!

Wow! As if I wasn’t in the Christmas spirit already… now I’ve been awarded a shiny, twinkly star by the lovely Vikki Thompson.  Yes, Vikki thinks I’m deserving of a Blog of the Year 2012 award.

I say ~ Awesome, and Thank You, Vikki!

Blog of the Year Award 1 star jpeg

What is the Blog of the Year 2012 Award?

Here are the description and rules, which I have lifted straight from the originator’s very cool blog ~ hope that’s ok, and thank you!

Do you know a blog that deserves an award? Do you have special blogs that you love to read? Which blogs do you bookmark and follow? Would you like to give them an award this year?

Then the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award is for you!

The ‘rules’ for this award are simple:

1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.

3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Awardhttp://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-awards/blog-of-the-year-2012-award/   and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them

5 You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience

6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

6 stars image

Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect!

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

When you begin you will receive the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star!

There are a total of 6 stars to collect.

Which means that you can check out your favourite blogs – and even if they have already been given the award by someone else – you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

My Thank You goes back to the blogger who nominated me…

Give it up for the lovely Vikki Thompson at The View Outside! (Vikki has collected six stars, by the way ~ she totally rocks!)

…and I’d like to pass the honour on to some of my favourite blogs:

Fizzy lobster

You know I love my seafood.
I wanted lobster for my birthday, so I got lobster for my birthday.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wanted fizz for my birthday, so I got that too.

O

Have Lobster, will eat it *wields knife*… who’s first for a piece of the action?

O

And to top it all…. authentic French cuisine also muscled in.

Perfect day.
And all my friends and family are here too. Could it get any better?

Ho Ho Ho: Happy St Nikolaus Day

It’s Nikolaus day!

O

Even though I live in the U.K., I like to celebrate St Nikolaus day with my children in the same way I would were we to live in Germany. I grew up with the tradition of putting my welly boot outside the front door during the night of 5 December, in hopes that St Nikolaus would stop by on his sleigh and drop off some sweets and perhaps a small present. Last night, my kids put their wellies by our fireplace alongside a little treat…

O

…and hoped for the best. Inevitably, they watched out of the window half the night to see if there was a sleigh, or even simply sleigh marks on the lawn (there’s no snow, so the sleigh marks would be pretty spectacular!). Inevitably, they rose even earlier than normal to race downstairs and see if the mysterious, red-coated Saint had indeed made the journey and….

Success. It’s such a joy to see their little faces aglow and it sweetens the Advent season and waiting for Christmas no end (pun intended).

My favourite memories of St Nikolaus day? Well, I have two. On one occasion, St Nikolaus didn’t just bring sweet treats, but actual snow. So much so in fact that the primary school closed and Mum took me sledging. A magical day!

The other occasion is even more mysterious. I six and was just beginning to doubt the veracity of the man and the event, but I wisely held my tongue. (Amazing how kids have an innate ability to sit on the fence when it comes to sweet traditions, right?) Well, that night, a book appeared alongside the sweets in my welly. A dedication had been written in the book ~ it said, “From the Unknown Nikolaus.” I was unbelievably excited and the provenance of the book remained a mystery. Today, I have an idea, of course, but I still remember the magic and the excitement.

Do you celebrate St Nikolaus Day? Or do you perhaps have another tradition to brighten the long wait for Christmas?

My Romantic Novelists’ Association Party Debut

The life of a romantic novelists appears to be one ongoing party.” Or so a friend commented when I confessed I was off to my winter ‘works do’ in London last Wednesday. (Yes, I mean the Romantic Novelists’ Association Winter Party held at the IMECE in London on 21 November 2012!!)

We have our moments,” I replied. Swallowing thoughts of long hours spent chained to my desk, typing away in my cold office, battling my way through edits and proofs, concepts, first drafts, second drafts, hundred-and-thirteenth drafts and so on. Of course, battling is an overstatement but… you know what I mean!

Anyway, a writer’s life can be lonely and overwhelming so occasions like the RNA Winter Party are merely a just equalizer, a chance to meet friends and let your hair down. Too right!

Here are a few photos of my debut RNA outing!

Glamming up and getting in the mood ~ with Mandy Baggot and Sheryl Browne!

Oh, looking a bit whited-out. Try again (said the photo-taker) and go in the middle, Nicky.

Happy to oblige! (With Anna Bell, Jan Bridgen and Mandy Baggot but having lost Sue Fortin somehow!)

Apparently, authors say ‘Whiskey’, not cheese. See, I learned something!

Meet the crew: Mandy, Sue and Sheryl!

Circle of pain. Whose feet hurt the most? Whose shoes are the worst torture instruments? I reckon mine, but Mandy did go barefoot for longest. Clockwise from 12 o’clock: Sue Fortin, Jan Bridgen, Mandy Baggot, myself and Sheryl Browne.

Ok, ladies, you can take them off now…

Mandy: “Where’s my phone?”
Sheryl: “Where are my keys?”
Mandy: “Are you hungry?”
Nicky (from the sideline): “We are taking a taxi, right?”
Sheryl: “Shall we get some dinner?”
Mandy: “I’m not walking.”
Sheryl: “Is it time go go?”
Mandy: “Where’s my phone?”
(We took a taxi back to the hotel, and we had a lovely snack-cum-dinner in the bar until almost midnight, and no more walking was done!)

The company was excellent. The canapes were delicious. Conversation sparkled. Time flew by. Until next time, my friends!

I Came, I Saw, I Conquered… and I Sang: Rocking the Festival of Romance

What can I say? It was AWESOME. I have a million photos of the amazing Festival of Romance last weekend. Not all of them came out too well owing to some very pink lighting… but here are the highlights. Oh, and in case you haven’t heard/seen: I sang. Yup, my friends, I sang a bit of a favourite rock song to introduce my reading of Sophie’s Turn. And to prove it… there’s videographic evidence!

And finally… I couldn’t help myself. I had to sing!

I didn’t know I would burst into song when I picked up the mic at the afternoon reading. Honest! It just… happened.

…and here’s me, doing the same thing again at the Rock Star party at Rock City Art. Oh yeah! Photo courtesy of Linn Halton ~ thank you, sweetie!

Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

So here’s to next year: let’s do it again, baby!

Off to Rock the Festival of Romance 2012 @romancefest

So! The day is finally here!

I’m off to Bedford (UK) to rock the Festival of Romance.

I’ll be going to Friday night’s gala, and I’ll be there all day Saturday to chat, meet people, and sign books.

I’m also taking part in the Readathon at 2pm AND I’m co-hosting the Rock Star Party at 5:30pm. Doesn’t that sound awesome?

I’ve retrieved not one, but two wheelie suitcases to contain all my stuff… clothes… books… and more. Will it all fit?

Here’s a selection of my glammest outfits.

Can’t wait to get dressed up! No pyjamas and toast crumbs for me this weekend. The outfits will go in the pink carry-on case. Apart from The Dress, which I’ll carry separately with one of the many additional arms I will magically grow overnight.

(Question: who else do you know that I talk about a lot who uses a pink carry-on suitcase at all times…???)

And here are all my authorly accoutrements. They clearly won’t all fit in the blue wheelie. More arms needed.

Rock on!

I’ll post a photographic diary of my version of events right here on this blog next week. After all, many of my loveahappyending.com friends will be there, plus The Romaniacs, plus many more fantastic authors and lots and lots of wonderful readers. It’ll be AWESOME!

Hope to see you there,
if you can make it.

🙂

My Next Big Thing

Oh yes. My Next Big Thing. Are you ready? It’s going to be big. Huge. Fantabulous. If I say so myself!

Preamble: I was invited to take place in The Next Big Thing by several lovely people in the past few months, and I had to regretfully pass on each invitation as I was in the throes of launchig Sophie’s Turn. You know who you are and you know how much I appreciated your invitation! This most recent invitation came at the tail end of my blog tour and therefore I couldn’t resist taking part and shouting about my WIP. Thank you for your understanding, my friends!
🙂 xxx

Last week, my Romantic Novelists’ Association friend and writer of family sagas and historical novels, Freda Lightfoot, tagged me in her post The Next Big Thing ~ and this week it’s my turn! The idea is that I answer ten questions about my current Work in Progress (my Next Big Thing!) and tag five other writers to tell you about their latest work next week!

So here goes:

What is the working title of your next book?

~ Sophie’s Run ~

Where did the idea come from for the book?

Sophie’s Run is the sequel to Sophie’s Turn. The ideas inside the book have been inspired by events in my own life, whether they happened to me, were witnessed by me, happened to others, or were a fancy flight of my imagination based on something I read, heard or saw on television.

What genre does your book fall under?

The obvious answer to this question would be that it is a contemporary romance, or even chick-lit. However, the entire trilogy is also so much more than that. There is a big element of self-discovery going on here, especially in Sophie’s Run. And undeniably, Sophie travels a lot. So I’d say it’s romance with a twist!

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?

Her famous star remains her rock while life takes her on a little detour…

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Neither, nor. The book will be published by my wonderful publisher, Sapphire Star Publishing (how many ‘publish’ words can you fit in one sentence, Nicky?) but we have a direct relationship without an agent involved. Oh, and before I forget: release date is 7 February 2013 ~ not long to go!

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

Fourteen weeks exactly. 🙂

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Do you know, I don’t know how to answer this questions. There are elements of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones in there, just in terms of the bizarre situations Sophie finds herself in. Obviously the rock star theme likens it a little to Public Secrets by Nora Roberts. But the Trilogy as a whole charts Sophie’s life over a period of almost ten years so that reminds me of some of Maeve Binchy’s great works. So ~ a tough one to answer.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Evidently, Sophie’s Run being a sequel, this inspiration arose from the first part of the story. However, I can pinpoint the impetus for actually writing it very precisely. It was 12 July 2011, a few days after I launched Sophie’s Turn onto the world (in indepenedent publisher format). I had temporarily exhausted all promotional avenues, or so I thought (little did I know!) and when I had a bit of a tearful conversation with my long-time friend, Shirley Mukisa, she had only one answer to my conundrum. “The next logical thing will be to write the second book.” So I did. 🙂

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Apart from being fun, sexy, wildly romantic and an absolute page-turner, Sophie’s Run also is a story about keeping the faith when life takes you down its long and winding road. I hope it inspires faith and patience in everyone whose life, like Sophie’s, doesn’t seem to work out to plan. Sophie’s message is that you are in charge of your destiny, ultimately, and if life doesn’t follow your intentions, you have to make it so. (Goodness, that sounds deep!)

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?

Ah, Sophie’s Run, the movie! This is obviously after we’ve made Sophie’s Turn, right? So… the dream cast would be:

Dan the Rock Star…. Played by Ewan McGregor! (Or Jon Bon Jovi, but he’d have to adopt an English accent!!!)

Sophie… Played by Keira Knightley!

Rachel … Played by Emma Watson!

And that’s my Next Big Thing. Here are the writers I’m tagging: rock on!

The amazing Jen Tucker, who writes hilariously funny biography giving amazing insights into family life and parenting.

The fabulous Jane Risdon, who posts some very intriguing articles-with-a-difference on her blog, who’s acting as my chief adviser on all things to do with rock-star lifestyle, and who’s been secretely slaving away at her WIP: I’m dying to see what it’s all about!

My brilliant Sapphire Star Publishing sister,  Jane Lark, who writes historical fiction and has just started a brand new author’s blog.

Wonderfully candid ‘scarlet woman’ Tanith Davenport, who I met through Freda Lightfoot and whose blog has me thoroughly intrigued.

The fifth spot… is open for YOU, if you want to take part. Don’t be shy, go on, I’d love to hear about your WIP! 🙂

Andrew the Pumpkin

Meet Andrew the Pumpkin.

He wasn’t born Andrew, of course. The name kind of happened… but he is an Andrew now, as, indeed, are all pumpkins in our house. Here’s why.

The Wells family is decorating the house for Halloween, and a few guests have arrived to help. Diane is artfully distributing spiders’ webs and spiders through the house. Jon is watching the football and keeping us informed on the score, while generally keeping an eye on things. Anne and Michael are drawing spooky Halloween pictures with the children, ably assisted by Jon (my other half, Jon) who is creative director and drawing Halloween spooks extraordinaire. Me, I’m flitting about organizing sweets and dinner.

One of the little ones is suddenly fearful she’s missing out on a pumpkin drawing. “Where’s my pumpkin,” she pipes up in  a slightly tremulous voice. Jon (my other half, Jon) to the rescue! He deftly whips a drawing off the table and presents it with a flourish: “Andrew the pumpkin.”

Little one duly mollified, I shoot my OH a grateful and somewhat amused look. “Why Andrew?” I whisper at him over the heads of the children.

“What?” comes the somewhat incoherent surprise.

“Why is the pumpkin called Andrew?” I clarify.

“Uh… he’s not. Andrew the pumpkin.”

This is turning surreal. “All I hear is Andrew the pumpkin,” I repeat, no longer at whisper voice.

“Yes,” my 7yo supplies helpfully, slowly, and with emphasis, yet completely unaware he’s clearing up the big mystery. “Anne drew the pumpkin.”

Cue hilarious laughter as OH and I and the other adults finally get the misunderstanding. The name stuck, however, and all pumpkins are called… Andrew!

Hope you had a fabulous Halloween and wishing you all the best for NaNoWriMo if you’re taking part. Here’s the run up to Christmas… let’s roll!

🙂

How do you #Voodoo? The Spellbindingly Fun Blog Party with @JaniceHorton

It’s Janice Horton’s Spellbindingly Fun Blog Party!

Congratulations to Janice as she celebrates the launch of her Halloween novella, How Do You Vodoo!

Loveless fashion model Nola Nichols thinks being beautiful is a curse; that is
until she is cursed and her looks begin to fade just a week before the most
important photo shoot of her career.

Nola rejects all rational explanation on what might be causing her lost looks and decides she has to find a way to get uncursed. This imaginative quest takes her from the Caribbean to Glasgow’s own City of the Dead. Along the way, she finds herself taking part in a rather unconventional funeral, involved in a voodoo ritual, reveals one or two unrests in her own past and falls madly in love with a doctor. Erm, that would be a witch doctor, right…?

How Do You Vodoo is out now ~ and it’s FREE today (26 October), what are you waiting for?

To honour the occasion, I’m taking part in the Spellbindingly Fun Blog Party so here goes…

Nicky’s Rocking-Ever-After Spell

Banish the worry, dry the tears, do away with your deepest fears
Welcome the love, the light, and the precious one
I’ve touched the stone and I will rock on

To banish the worry, dry the tears, do away with your deepest fears
~
Collect one worry stone on a new moon at midnight and put in the freezer until the next full moon
~Climb the highest Scottish mountain to collect thirteen dragon tears; put in the freezer next to the worry stone until the next full moon
~Write a list of your deepest fears and add them to the worry stone and dragon tears in the freezer (remember to use waterproof ink!)

To welcome the light, the love, the precious one
~Gather stardust and summon Northern lights on the next night of the next full moon
~Pick a single white rose by the light of the next full moon
~Collect a moonstone by the light of the next full moon

BY THE LIGHT OF THE NEXT FULL MOON…

Remove the worry stone and dragon tears and list of your deepest fears from the freezer. Crush with the biggest hammer you can find while reciting the first line of the spell, and place resulting worry, tear and fear dust in cauldron.

Sprinkle the worry, tear and fear dust liberally with Northern lights and stardust. Stir well using the single white rose while reciting the second line of the spell.

Touch the moonstone and throw it high in the air, aiming to land in cauldron. Aim carefully. If you miss, your spell is void.

After (and only after) the moonstone has landed safely in the cauldron, recite the third and final line of the spell. You are now allowed to turn up the music. Congratulations: you will rock ever after!
