Two Princes

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Today I have a guest-poster by proxy. Yes, today’s choice comes via my beloved other half. He put this song on in the car the other day and guess what? The kids totally rocked out to it. They’re only six and eight and they knew it, goodness knows how. You should have heard the gleeful shouts of “Just Go Ahead Now!” So it must be a classic. And I’m certainly grooving as I’m posting it.

*Sings* If you…want to buy me flowers… just go ahead now!

Plus, of course, my leading lady Sophie seems to be faced with two princes in her life, at one point or another. Which one would her Dad approve, I wonder? (Actually, I don’t wonder that at all, I know her Dad’s a pretty cool man and he goes with his heart; he’d be cheering Dan on from the sidelines if he could!)

Without further ado, I give you:

Now then. Two princes ~ which one do YOU chose?

In The Deep

Morning, all!

It’s the last day of the half-term and my OH has taken the day off so we can have a family treat. We’re off to THE DEEP in Hull. If the Humber bridge is open for visitors, we might even venture across ~ or partway across ~ on foot. So this is kind of a non-post just to let you know why I’m not posting anything more substantial. I am, in fact, taking the day off! Back to normal next week ~ I’ll see you for Music Monday. Have a great weekend…

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

It’s Music Monday!NewMusicMondayLogo

First of all, wishing all my readers all over a world a lovely holiday Monday if, indeed, it is a holiday with you. It’s certainly a Bank Holiday in the UK and it’s Memorial Day in the US…so if you are enjoying a long weekend, I hope it’s a fab one. And if you’re not: have a rocking day anyway!

Today I’m posting a classic, timeless song that’s seen me through many a decision, albeit in a roundabout way! To me, this is the celebration of indecision and uncertainty, and it’s absolutely priceless if you are facing a personal crossroads. It gives you a great sense of not being alone with a difficult decision, PLUS you get to rock out while you ponder. On a few memorable occasions, this very song has swayed me towards the ‘go’ option (like…leaving Germany, leaving a boyfriend, leaving a terrible flat). Then again, in different circumstances, I’ve come out on the side of ‘stay’ (Stay on a course, stay with a boyfriend, stay in a flat…). Life goes in circles, but that takes me onto a different song for a different time.

Today, I’m probably going off to the seaside with the family, and as the afternoon draws to a close and the promised rain clouds brew up, the song will take on a very… practical dimension indeed. So here goes:

So, what about you? Have you ever faced this conundrum? And which way did you turn ~ did you stay or did you go? I’d love to hear from you!

FRIDAY SPECIAL! Meet Nick Elliott, Rock Photographer Extraordinaire

Today, I’m rocking your world from a different angle!

It’s my great pleasure and privilege to bring you a glimpse into the world and the art of Nick Elliott, Rock Photographer.

Nick and I first ‘met’ during the live on-air launch party for Sophie’s Run, and we’ve been in touch via social media ever since. Nick has a terrific sense of humour and a huge wealth of experience of working in and with the rock industry. Evidently, I was going to be intrigued by his work and his career, and eventually I asked him whether he might like to visit me for an interview.  He said yes! So without further ado, I give you:

Hi Nick, thank you so much for taking time out of your hectic schedule to chat with me today ~ I am honoured! So, let’s introduce you to my readers. Who is Nick Elliott? Give me the potted history of Nick Elliott, rock photographer.

Nick Elliott is, essentially, a deep and passionate and a romantic person who shares a bed with a partner that goes under the name of creativity and has an unbelievable drive and push to create work that will live on well beyond him.

I like your style, Nick! Tell us, how did you get into rock photography?

I’ve always been around and worked in the music industry in various different guises.

If I have a second passion to photography, it’s music and it is really the foundation of my image creation – sitting in a dark room listening to legendary rock bands and some fantastic artists. These guys then went onto become my heroes, part of the foundation of the person I am.

Prior to specialising in the music business,I was a creative advertising photographer shooting a lot of above-the-line campaigns working on accounts such as cigarette manufacturers, pharmaceuticals, cars and fashion for some of the biggest advertising agencies and clients on the planet.

The digi revolution was just starting to hit, things were changing in a big way, I was creatively very frustrated and decided that, at that point, it was the right time to specialise in what I really wanted to do.

Follow that dream ~ that’s simply inspiring! You mentioned the digi revolution… how has technology and equipment changed since you first started out? Does this make your job easier or harder?

Technology has changed the photographic business but it has also, effectively, killed the business.

A I Lay Daying copyright by Nick Elliott via www.redalbelpublishing.com.

“As I Lay Dying” copyright by Nick Elliott via http://www.redalbelpublishing.com.

Whoa, I didn’t expect that answer! How come?

Technology has now opened up photography, which is an art form and should always remain that, to be violated by a load of nobody people thinking that they are somebody and, in this case photographers.

Creativity cannot be taught but they now claim that photography can, be so I don’t welcome the move from traditional to digital photography, as a whole.

It’s a lot easier now to just take pictures but a lot harder to define a style and create art.

Do you know, I think I know what you mean. Digitization has sent similar ‘shock waves’ through the publishing industry!

But let’s leave technology for a moment and look at your subjects… your models, I mean. How have rock bands changes since you first started out?

They’ve become a lot ‘cleaner’, you don’t have as much excess as you did – drink, drugs, sex – it’s made for TV now and is not as ‘raw’. It’s not as ‘working class’, which drove particular parts of the genre, like heavy metal, and the inspiration for some of the great songs to be written.

It’s really interesting to hear you say that ~ this is fabulous input from one who knows to one who writes about it! 🙂 Speaking of, I am incredibly structured in my writing process, I like my routine. Do you have a typical ‘shooting day’ schedule?

There isn’t one. There is no ‘typical’ in this business at all.

Lol, I’ll file that comment for future reference! So in the absence of typical-ness, how do you know when/that you’ve taken that killer shot, the amazing photo that will make your (and the artist’s) day?

Well, for me it is a very spiritual thing, it’s a sense of knowing that when you look at this particular composition, certainly with the live stuff, it’s there. It’s a feeling, you know, like a chemistry that I have got exactly what I went there to get.

I like that! It definitely has to be some kind of chemistry, it shows in your photos! Now thenWhat’s the best thing about being a rock photographer?

I don’t think there is a ‘best thing’ about being a rock photographer. For me, it’s about living the dream, fulfilling childhood ambitions but most of all, it is about the creation of the images, the art, leaving a mark, taking people to another place when they look at my work.

I’d say that’s definitely mission accomplished! Do you have any tips for aspiring rock photographers?

It’s all about style.

Short, sweet, and to the point. Budding rock photographers of the world, take note: find your style. Thank you, Nick. 🙂

I see time is whizzing by all too quickly, but can we manage some quick-fire pick’n’mix questions just for fun? We can? Excellent, here goes:

Digital photography or traditional rolls of film?
There are pros and cons on both sides but if I had to choose I’d go for digital.

Colour or black and white?
Black and white.

Bon Jovi or Queen?
Queen.

Steak dinner or fish’n’chips?
Steak dinner.

Beer or wine? (or cocktails??)
Neither – scotch and coke.

 Vinyl, or mp3/downloads?
MP3.

If you could go back in time, would you rather go back to the 1960s or the 1980s?
1960s.

If you were to swap roles with a rock star, who would you be: singer, guitarist, drummer, bassist or keyboarder?
Guitarist.

Wow, that’s so cool! There are the ingredients for a great rock’n’roll party here, methinks. Thank you for taking part! And thank you indeed again for visiting and chatting today. I guess I better let you go, but I hope that maybe you’ll come back one day so I can find out more about defining a style and quiz you about a sample day at work (if not a typical one, LOL). It’s been a blast!

DEAD GAME
Finalist in the People’s Book Prize!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today Nicky – I’m so delighted to be here.  I love the fact that us authors are so supportive of one another.  It makes the writing world all the more fun to be in.

Today, I really would just like to let you all know about my debut novel, Dead Game, the first in The Game Trilogy, and how it has been made a finalist in The People’s Book Prize (the literary world’s version of the X-Factor).  As you can imagine I am delighted that Dead Game readers have responded and back in the Autumn, voted for my work – but now that it has made it into the finals, I need to start my mini campaign again and this is the week – voting ends on the 28th May 2013.  So, let me tell you a little bit about Dead Game, why I wrote it and why you should vote for it.

Introducing DEAD GAME

Charles - Copy

The Game Trilogy, particularly Dead Game, was written in memory of my cousin Charles, who served out in Iraq 2003 – it’s about the journey of a young Lance Corporal whose life was cut short.  It begs the questions, ‘are we really just a heavy mass of bodies made up of blood, bone and skin, glued to the Earth by gravity, running around creating a giant mess?’   It’s a question that will be answered with a thousand different voices.   But in my moment of grief and as my atonement to my cousin, and every soldier who has stood for their country, Dead Game is my answer.  The conflicts of today and the pressures that are on our soldiers shoulders are all too clear for us to see, particularly given the Woolwich Soldier news of yesterday.

Dead Game is an epic reflection of our wanting to connect with something bigger than ourselves; a fantasy entwining English patriotic family values and tradition with profound philosophy and spirituality and at the same time, it is the deepest love story.  Uplifting all those who have ever loved and lost, it strives to put forward one answer to death and is an allegorical story of bravery, acceptance, friendship, trust and love, but in the same breath, it is the ultimate adventure of a soldier, propelled by the inconceivable motivation to survive.

Dead Game Cover

With guardian angels, a cursed centaur and mythical saints, Lance Corporal Archie Fletcher battles his way through Transit, discovering an underwater world of ancient secrets and brawling with wild lions, enraged charioteers and venomous plants. With the Moon’s trickery endangering his sanity and a three-headed dragon that never sleeps blocking his path, Dead Game is no easy feat. The fantasy will whisk you away to a parallel world confirming the knowing deep within us all that the adventure of life must go on.

And there’s more…

The sequel to Dead Game and the second part in the trilogy, ‘Waiting Game’, was released on 3rd March 2013 with Ghostly Publishing Ltd and follows Sarah Walker after the tragic death of her cousin, Archie.  Embarking on a long-awaited trip around the world she lands herself in a dingy Thai soi and runs into a forgotten rogue from her past.  Terrified, Sarah flees and in doing so, finds herself in a ghostly world with warped satyrs, dual-headed snakes, and a wicked witch who plots to enslave her; trying to piece together the jigsaw of her past in time; the true meaning of friendship is at stake.  Waiting Game is a dangerous journey but it is a fragile heart that travels it.  Compelled to move on whether she wants to or not, Sarah’s scars run deep, but just how far will she go in an attempt to find Archie?

You can find DEAD GAME on AMAZON!

Supporting Charity

The Game Trilogy supports ‘The Soldiers Charity’ (Army Benevolent Fund), who gives a lifetime of support to those serving and retired soldiers and their families.  My family could not have got through it without them, which is why a percentage of every book sold will be going to their life-saving cause.

Vote now: Dead Game is a Finalist in the People’s Book Prize!

Dead Game can only win with YOUR votes… it doesn’t cost anything to vote… all you need to do is click the link below, register, scroll down two books and click on VOTE FOR DEAD GAME – it will take 30 seconds, so please, please, please when you have 30 seconds spare, vote for my hero’s tale.

Every life is like a novel with the ending ripped out.  Nobody really knows what is to come.  My fantasy can be read on many different levels… teenagers particularly seem to have taken to it but really, it’s just a story about a soldier, gone too soon.  I hope, if you read it, you can all relate to it and that it strengthens you.

With all my best wishes

Claire

Claire, thank you so much for visiting here today and HUGE congratulations on becoming a finalist in the People’s Book Prize. I wish you every success ~ let’s hope those voting fingers click away!!! 🙂 Here’s that link again:

It was fabulous to meet you at the Festival, and I’m thrilled you could visit here today to spread the word about DEAD GAME!

So, people ~ what do you reckon about DEAD GAME?

Smells Like Teen Spirit

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Now, I’m not normally a grunge kind of person. It’s not that I dislike it. It’s just that most of the time, I like other things better. But. Evidently grunge rock didn’t pass me by! And there are classics that you cannot fail to love.

Last week, while I was working fast and furiously on my mini-WiP, this particular song carried me through. It is perfect on so many levels… you’ll have to way until a little later in the year to fully understand, but let yourselves be intrigued by this notion. Why would Nirvana suddenly inspire Nicky Wells, rock star romance author extraordinaire?

Guesses welcome!

Sometimes I Think Germish

You probably know that I’m a prolific writer and a vicious proofer. Of course, occasionally I do make mistakes. I have been known to commit the occasional grammatical faux-pas; sometimes the odd typo or three creeps in, and every now and then, I make genuine spelling mistakes. I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t! Further, I have to confess to having a very bad relationship with serial commas, but I do like my apostrophes used correctly.

All these mistakes get fixed and corrected, naturally. Either by myself, during my many rounds of proofing, or by an external proofer.

Yet I have a little secret that may not be immediately obvious to my readers. In fact, many people are terribly surprised when they find out, and I’ve even had a few people disbelieving me entirely (“you’re pulling my leg, right?”).

Here goes. I think, and therefore write, in a language that isn’t my native language. My native language is German, but I find myself utterly unable to string together a narrative in that language. Instead, I prefer English. I have lived and breathed and dreamed English ever since I moved to the UK twenty years ago. In fact, I have lived and breathed and dreamed in English from the moment I started learning the language.

dictionary

Why, you want to know? I have no idea. I am as baffled as you are. There’s some strange wiring going on in my brain that is beyond bilingualism, because my preference for the use of English has come to the detriment of what is meant to be my infallible, incorruptible mother tongue. Somehow, for me, this is not so.

Moreover, this phenomenon goes deeper than just thinking, speaking or writing. I have been told by the few people who know me ‘fluently’ in both languages that my voice is deeper in English (or goes up three octaves in German, depending on your viewpoint), that my wit is sharper, my confidence stronger and my exuberance more buoyant. (Not my words, I assure you!) That is an awful lot to take in when you’re not even aware that that’s going on.

Suffice it to say that I do feel more comfortable in English, in every respect. I struggle to express emotion in German, which is proving a bit of a problem as I am making a valiant effort at raising my children bilingually. Yet in English, with its infinite nuances and wonderful registers, the metaphors flow and expression is easy. Weird, huh?

That said, when I was working on Sophie’s Turn, and more recently the sequel, Sophie’s Run, I had some very strange things happening to me. After all this time living and working in England, after all this time spent thinking and writing in English, suddenly the Germanisms started popping up in my brain.

This was particularly the case for Sophie’s Run as some parts of the book are set in several places in Germany. “Germish” is one of the official terms for this type of linguistic interference, only it usually refers to English words used (incorrectly or out of context) in German, rather than German expressions creeping into English. But still, you get the idea.

I found myself thinking up turns of phrases or expressions that are unknown to the English-speaking world. For example, I’d say something like, this is quite a plastic description. HUH? In German, a description that is ‘plastisch’ would denote a description so good that it’s 3D, life-like, authentic. In English, this mistranslation is meaningless. Evidently, these instances of Germish gibberish never make it onto the page; instead, I spend some significant time trying to find an appropriate English translation. Very occasionally, I have to give up and take a different English idiomatic approach.

Sophies_Run.indd

A case in point is the actual title for Sophie’s Run, which drove me to distraction for months. There’s a German word, Aussetzer, that captures perfectly what I wanted to express, but there is no adequate English equivalent. Aussetzer means to undergo a temporary moment of madness where all reason deserts you and you do some weird and wonderful things. That’s a bit of a mouthful ~ you see the predicament? Hiatus doesn’t capture it, neither does folly, break, interlude, intermission, interruption. Mad five minutes isn’t exactly a catchy book title. The closest expression I could come up with was to flip out, which isn’t yet recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary. Therefore I couldn’t be sure that people would interpret this ‘street expression’ accurately and that’s way too risky for a book title. Plus, Sophie Flips Out doesn’t exactly conjure expectations of romantic comedy, rock star glamour and happy endings, now, does it? Therefore, Sophie simply runs. It lacks the German elegance, but it has its own cunning double or even triple meaning.

So there is something about the German language that lodges deeply in my brain and that pops up most unexpectedly. Very occasionally (say, once or twice), I have exercised artistic license and allowed myself to add the Germanisms to the manuscript when I felt that they worked, or that they added a touch of humour, or that the expression should quite simply exist in the English language. After all, that’s how language grows! So if you come across anything a little unusual, a little exotic, do get in touch… I invite you most heartily!

Do you have any experiences of weird interference with your brain? I’d love to hear I’m not alone…

CentreStage with Samantha Stroh Bailey: Meeting Jamie and Finding Lucas

Welcome to CentreStage!
CS_Logo

CentreStage showcases fabulous authors from around the world, and today it is my extra-special, huge pleasure to welcome the fabulous Samantha Stroh Bailey, author of the outstanding romantic comedy, Finding Lucas. Sam has a tremendous sense of humour and over recent weeks we’ve discovered that we have so much in common, it’s like we’re long-distance soul sisters. I kid you not! So without further ado, I give you:

Samantha Stroh Bailey!

samheadshotauthorcentral

Thanks so much to the fabulous Nicky Wells for inviting me here today.

Nicky: Why, thank you for visiting! I’m so thrilled you could make it all the way from Canada today, Sam!

Nicky and I met through social media and instantly bonded over writing, motherhood and sassy senses of humor. I loved Sophie’s Turn and am so happy to have found another author I admire.

Nicky: *blushes* why, thank you!

I thought I’d give a peek into the, perhaps, somewhat unexpected aspects of my personality. Here goes!

  1.  I’m a Gemini, so I have a dual personality. While I’m very easygoing and down- to-earth, I’m also anxious and stress about the little things.
  2. I love meat and nothing is better than gnawing on a giant bone. Disgusting, I know.
  3. I don’t like bread and pasta.
  4. I’m scared of thunder, snakes, heights, and not accomplishing everything I want to.
  5. Technology also scares the crap out of me.
  6. I love alternative music and a lead singer who screams has me for life. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden has the sexiest voice in the world.
  7. I’m addicted to celebrity gossip.
  8. People think I smile all the time, but they don’t see me when I first wake up, and I’m a bear.
  9. When you’re talking to me, I’m watching your every move for writing fodder. Sorry.
  10. I was a competitive dancer for years until stage fright derailed my plans of going to Juilliard and re-enacting Flashdance. The audition part—not the exotic dancer part.

Nicky: Wow, Sam, thank you for sharing! I’m with you on most of these points although I have to confess loving my carbs. And now I’ll forever envisage you in the role of exotic dancer… 🙂

I’m always excited when readers feel a connection to Jamie Ross, the protagonist in my debut novel, Finding Lucas. And I am so intrigued when people point out our similarities and differences from their perspectives. Well, here’s my view!

Jamie and I:

  1.  are both huge coffee addicts.
  2. love to drop the F bomb into adult conversation.
  3. both have gorgeous and tall BFFs.
  4. adore men with messy hair and stubble.

 Unlike Jamie…

  1. …I am quite fond of the color pink.
  2. …I tend to embarrass my family instead of the other way around.
  3. …I wish I had her ass.
  4. …I’m a better dancer.

I’m so grateful to everyone who has read and enjoyed Finding Lucas.

FLNov22Bigpaperback

Nicky: Sorry to interrupt again but… Me! Me! I loved Finding Lucas. I couldn’t put it down. I laughed out loud, and I cried, and I gnawed my fingers when the plan… (don’t want to give any spoilers here!)…um…shall we say, when the plan comes to fruition. Sort of. It’s an awesome, fabulous, life-affirming and sassy read and I couldn’t recommend it more. LOL, end of broadcast. Sam, you were saying?

And I hope you liked this little glimpse into the real me! I love to hear from my readers, so please connect with me!
