Highway to Hell

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Happy Monday, you! I hope you’re well today and that you had a fabulous weekend. Me, I’ve been all over the place lately, and I woke up this morning feeling very discombobulated. There are just too many things vying for prime air space in my brain. So I looked to the UK Top Forty Rock Singles Charts for inspiration (because sometimes even genius writers and rock lovers need a helping hand!) and stumbled across this gem. It’s currently at number six, and it totally suits my mood, not least because of its strong anthem sing-it-at-the-top-of-your-voice-and-feel-better value.

There, that’s better already. What song clears your mind when you’re distracted or confused?

The Wind Weeps… with Anneli Purchase

CentreStage with Anneli Purchase!

CS_Logo

Welcome to CentreStage! I’m absolutely delighted to turn the floor over to my fabulous Canadian friend Anneli Purchase. For those of you who might not know her, Anneli is the author of three moving and captivating novels. When she’s not writing, she’s often busy taking photos and sharing them via her blog in wonderfully inspiring posts. She’s also a tremendous supporter of fellow authors and great fun to hang out with on the social networks. While she lives in Canada, she had a German mother, and we quite often compare memories of German-inspired childhood traditions concerning Easter, Christmas and other assorted holidays.  Today, she’s come to showcase her debut novel, The Wind Weeps. Take it away, Anneli!

The Wind Weeps

The setting for my novel The Wind Weeps is the west coast of British Columbia. The situation that develops in this story is fiction and a bit bizarre, but it is one that, with variations, has actually taken place more than once on this coast. If you want adventure and suspense, along with a good love story, maybe this is the book for you.

Why did I choose this title?

Have you ever heard high winds roaring through the trees in a windstorm? On the coast of British Columbia what isn’t rock is trees. When the southeast winds scream across the water and then, making landfall, get hung up in the tall firs and cedars, the whooshing of the wind alternates between howling and whining. Unsettling sounds, even when you have your life in order, but when you wish you were elsewhere and have absolutely no escape, the wind almost begs you to join it in its weeping.

My Main Characters

Andrea is a happy young woman who leaves her boring city job back east and comes out west for a life of adventure. She is determined to learn to get by on her own in a world that is much more raw than the sheltered city life she left behind.

She is a head-turner. Men are attracted to her good looks, but she is apparently oblivious to the effect she has on them.

Jim ~ Every woman’s Mr. Right, he is handsome, humble, capable, fun to be with, and sexy without trying to be.

Robert ~ Strong, tall, handsome, with a magnetic personality…and secrets he keeps hidden.

The Story

When she finds a job on the wharf in a small west coast town, she has her choice of men, but naively, she gets caught up in too much of a good thing. There’s a song by Glenn Frey that was made just for her.

“Are you gonna stay with the one who loves you
Or are you goin’ back to the one you love?
Someone’s gonna cry when they know they’ve lost you
Someone’s gonna thank the stars above”

Poor Andrea makes the wrong choice and pays the price. When she ends up in a desperate situation, she often hears the wind and wants to weep with it.

But wait, she’s made of stronger stuff than that. She is determined to find a way out. As we follow Andrea in her dilemma, we travel the coast and experience it as if we were in the boat with her, in the forest with her, in the remote towns with her, in a life of hell with her, hanging onto a sliver of hope.

Music Monday Special: IT’S MY LIFE plus Winners, Podcast Linkies and Festival of Romance Pics

Happy Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

So. How’ve you been? Last week got away from me from the word go, and after the big Siren FM ‘Spirits of Christmas’ On Air Festive Fun Extravaganza, I went completely MIA.  Very bad form of me, but there was a reason! The reason being that a cold gripped me and wouldn’t let me go! And at the weekend, it was time for the Festival of Romance ~ so now it’s Monday again and I’m asking myself, where did the last seven days go?

Well. This is the rock star lifestyle for sure, right? So here’s a fitting song. I know I shared Bon Jovi last week already when sleep seemed the most elusive resource of all… but hey, if this band will write the most appropriate songs for the soundtrack of my life, I can’t help it, right? Here goes. STAY TUNED (i.e. read on) for your Radio Party Podcast Linkies and some photos from the weekend’s Romance Fest!

WINNERS!

The winners of the Spirits of Christmas On Air Festive Fun Extravaganza Party were announced live on the show. You can also hear the announcements in the podcast, but let’s give the winners a big cheer here too.

Rachel Miles and Lheanne Spicer ~ One signed paperback copy of Spirits of Christmas each!

Dawn Crooks ~ One “Now That’s What I Call Christmas” CD

Thank you to everyone who entered. I was stunned, as always, by the response to this giveaway, especially given the very short countdown time of only three days. You all ROCK and I feel the lurve!

It was rockin’ awesome! And is if that wasn’t enough fun for one week, after two days of languishing on the sofa with a dreadful cold, I made my way to Bedford for….

Festival of Romance!

Saturday morning saw me arriving (very nearly) bright-eyed and thoroughly excited in Bedford for immediate setting up of table at the Romance Fair. This year, we were hosted in the Harpur Suite, and the punters started arriving as soon as the doors opened at 10 a.m. The fair passed faster than you could say “Romance Fest 2013” with a steady stream of visitors passing by my stall. Evidently I did a reading! I chose a little passage from “Spirits of Christmas” that was suitable for the “Royal Baby Shower” theme. And evidently, I opened my reading with a short burst of song. LOL!

The gala/ball was splendiferous! My congratulations go out once again to all the award winners, you totally rocked it! I’m still reeling from all the fun and information packed into the industry event on Sunday. And it was amazing meeting all manner of readers and friends, many of whom I knew from Facebook or Twitter but hadn’t hitherto met face-to-face: JB Johnston, Carol Wright, Heidi Bartlett, Kiru Taye, Talli Roland, Manda Ward, Glynis, Sheryl Browne, Les Moriarty, Pete Cook, Linn Halton, Mandy Baggot, Fi Harper, Kate Allen, Cat, Jane Lovering, Terri Nixon, Lyn, Caroline… the list goes on and on!

If you missed it this year, I’d thoroughly recommend you check out this fabulous event next year and: I’ll see you there!

CentreStage with Cat Lavoie: Introducing “Zoey & the Moment of Zen”

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

It’s my enormous pleasure to introduce you to a new friend I recently made in a fabulous Facebook group. Give it up for the one and only Cat Lavoie! Cat has recently released her new novel, Zoey & the Moment of Zen. She’s sharing with us today the blurb and… *Nicky cheers very loudly indeed* Zoey’s playlist!! Read and be ready to be wowed!

Zoey & the Moment of Zen

zoey and the moment of zen (2)

When coffee shop owner Zoey Everwood takes her obsession with ex-boyfriend Braden too far, everyone—except Zoey—is convinced a bit of fun in the sun at the Moment of Zen Wellness Resort will help her get over him once and for all.

But Zoey’s relaxing vacation turns out to be anything but peaceful when she meets Shane Lawson, a resort guest who bears a striking resemblance to Braden. And things get even more complicated when the resort’s owner starts spilling secrets about Zoey’s aunt Nessa, the woman who raised her. Add a snarky Wellness Coordinator and Nate Holmes—Shane’s grumpy friend—to the mix, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect tropical storm.

When Zoey comes back home with a new husband instead of tacky souvenirs, she must convince everyone she hasn’t completely lost her mind. As Zoey and Shane struggle to keep the magic alive outside the resort, Zoey discovers that she isn’t the only one having trouble letting go of the past. And when Nate drops a bombshell that changes everything, Zoey must decide if the old saying is true—what happens at the Moment of Zen stays at the Moment of Zen.

ZOEY’S PLAYLIST: MUSICAL Q&A WITH ZOEY EVERWOOD

Song that reminds you of someone from your past: “Un-break My Heart” by Toni Braxton. Whenever I hear it, I think about my ex, Braden.

Song you sing at the top of your lungs when no one is around:  “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga. I usually sing (and dance!) along to it when I’m closing up the coffee shop at the end of the day. Thank goodness the customers don’t see my horrible dance moves because we’d probably go out of business really fast!

Song that reminds you of your childhood: My aunt Nessa has developed a love of Mozart and Beethoven in the last few years but, growing up, it was more classic rock than classical music. Whenever I hear “More Than a Feeling” by Boston or “Roxanne” by The Police, I remember sitting in the passenger’s seat of her car and singing along with her.

Favourite karaoke song: “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher. But I’ll only sing it if my best friend Dar is on stage with me… and if I’ve had a few cocktails.

Song you know every single word to: Easy. “You Were Meant For Me” by Jewel. I know it by heart—I could sing it right now if you want… No? Okay.

Song that would play in the movie of your life:  “She Works Hard for the Money” by Donna Summer would play in the opening credits over a montage of me working in the coffee shop.

Best song to cry to: “Someone Like You” by Adele. Can anyone listen to that song without tearing up?

Wow. Love love LOVE this playlist, and what a great way to introduce a character. Thanks for sharing, Zoey! X 🙂

About Cat Lavoie
cat lavoie (2)

Cat Lavoie was born in the small town of Jonquière in Québec, Canada. At the age of nineteen, she packed up her things (mostly books) and moved to the big city of Montreal where she currently lives with her tempestuous cat Abbie–who is both adorable and quite possibly evil.

An incurable Anglophile since her university days where she studied English Literature, she can often be found daydreaming about her next trip to London. Since she’s an expert at the art of procrastination, Cat is easily distracted by cooking and home improvement shows–even though she’s not particularly good at either.

Cat grew up watching soap operas and legal dramas and–had she not decided to be a claims analyst by day and write chick lit by night–she would have probably become a designer suit-wearing lawyer. Or a character on All My Children (which is what she really wanted to be when she was twelve).

Cat is not sure whether she’s a geek or a nerd–and is afraid she might be both. Cat blogs about the writing life and posts adorable pictures of Abbie over at the Catenabi Chronicles. Come say hello at: http://www.CatLavoie.com and follow @Catenabi on Twitter.

AWESOME!

Huge congratulations on your launch, Cat, and thanks for sharing these fabulous songs. I’m all a-rocking here! 🙂

Folks ~ give Zoey, her playlist, and her moment of Zen a warm welcome and let’s hear your thoughts!

Cover Reveal and e-Launch: The Consequences Collection by Melanie Robertson-King

Welcome to a Saturday Special Edition of CentreStage!

CS_Logo

Today, I’m giving my blog over to the lovely Melanie Robertson-King all the way over in Canada as she celebrates a cover reveal and the e-launch of her latest publication. Are you ready for the Consequences?

“If you could see the consequences – would you?”

consequences cover 3 cropped (2)

Special thank you to Madliz Coles whose kind permission made it possible to use her evocative photograph as the cover image for my anthology.

Blurb:

The Consequences Collection is an eclectic compilation of twelve stories ranging from non-fiction through creative non-fiction to pure fiction, in prose and poetry.

The story of a Scottish Home Child is based on fact and told from the child’s point of view; The Mystery Woman of Kinettles is a non-fiction article on the appearance and subsequent disappearance of a woman’s body near the Wellington County House of Industry (Poor House) in 1879 Southwestern Ontario.

Some of these stories are lighter than others, and some might even beg you to leave the lights on.

Excerpt from the cover story Consequences:

Splat! The mail landed on the ceramic tile floor of the foyer. Usually, the noise was followed by the snap of the mail slot door closing. Today it wasn’t.

Something must have stuck in it. Sylvia put her coffee down on the counter and walked to the front door. A large white envelope remained suspended in the door. She pulled it the rest of the way through. The flap snapped shut and even though she was used to hearing the metallic sound, it startled her.

She’d expected a letter from her solicitor regarding her divorce from Bill but it wasn’t there. However, that one in particular had piqued her curiosity. Emblazoned on the top left corner was an official-looking crest. The addressee’s name and address were correct. It was her. Why would this person or agency be sending her a letter? She’d never heard of them before.

Sylvia turned the envelope over and worked her thumb under the flap. Those self-sticking envelopes are a bugger, she thought as she tried to rip it open. Finally, she gave up and tore down the side and yanked the contents out.

She skimmed over the letter but it didn’t make any sense so placed it on the small table by the door. It could be dealt with later. In the meantime, she looked at the rest of her mail. Nothing else untoward – just the electric bill, gas bill, and the usual assortment of junk – mail. She dropped them on top of the letter and returned to the kitchen.

The coffee she’d poured earlier had gone cold. She dumped it down the sink and turned the water on to rinse it away before getting a fresh one.

Drawn by some inexplicable force, Sylvia went back to the foyer and collected the letter and the mangled envelope. She returned to the kitchen, flipped on the radio and sat down at her small table. Why had she opened it in the first place? She should have just binned it. That’s what she usually did with unsolicited mail. But there was something strangely familiar about it. The addressee information was on a computer printed label so there was no clue there. The sororities from University had crests or emblems to differentiate one from another. She wracked her brain trying to remember what they looked like. It had been over thirty years since she’d attended. Sylvia never belonged to a sorority because she thought the girls who did were snooty and stuck-up.

She’d call her friend, Laurie and tell her about the letter. They’d been friends since childhood, attended the same elementary and secondary schools and even the same University. She could tell her anything, couldn’t she?

About the author:

Melanie_author_photo_500x590

Melanie Robertson-King has always been a fan of the written word. Growing up as an only child, her face was almost always buried in a book from the time she could read. Her father was one of the thousands of Home Children sent to Canada through the auspices of The Orphan Homes of Scotland, and she has been fortunate to be able to visit her father’s homeland many times and even met the Princess Royal at the orphanage where he was raised.

She lives in Brockville, Ontario, Canada a few short city blocks north of the St Lawrence River with her husband of thirty-eight years and is ‘housekeeping staff’ to a big, goofy, but loveable, dog (cross between lab, shepherd and black and tan hound).

A Shadow in the Past, published in 2012 by 4RV Publishing, was Melanie’s debut novel.

Feeling Festive! Spirits of Christmas ~ A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol

Ho, Ho, Ho!

1 November heralds the start of the Christmas season in my house. From this day, I’m allowed to put on the Christmas rock songs and crank the stereo up loud. So I can’t think of a better day to bring you this, at last. My special mini surprise project, the one I’ve been promising you since…ooooh… May. Out today in Kindle and paperback editions via Amazon. I simply cannot tell you how excited I am about this, my third publication this year!! Give yourself up to a bit of festive fun with…

Spirits of Christmas
~ A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol!

SpiritsChristmas_NW_Cover_500

There. I bet it all makes sense now… #rock #romance #ghosts #novella… the only clue I left out was #Christmas! Here’s the blurb:

At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

This novella is out NOW. Yes, right now!
Only £1.53 or $2.99 on Kindle, and £4.00 or $6.00 in paperback**:

Amazon.co.uk Kindle | Amazon.co.uk Paperback
Amazon.com Kindle | Amazon.com Paperback

**In fact, at this precise moment in time, Amazon has very kindly, and without my influence, discounted the paperbacks slightly, so they’re even cheaper than advertised here!! No idea how long this will last, so check it out while you can. 🙂

Why?

Well, you already know I love rock music and romance. If you’ve been hanging out around this blog for a while, you’ll also know I love the Christmas season. Writing something to combine all three was a bit of an inevitability, really!

The idea for this book came to me the very night after I launched my second book, Sophie’s Run, in February of this year. I was hyped up with excitement, I had finished writing my third book and was waiting for publisher edits, and I had already planned my fourth full-length novel. I was utterly and completely unable to sleep with everything that was going on, and quite unexpectedly, the whole story was in my head. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite Christmas stories both in the original and its many varied adaptations. I suddenly thought… why not bring it into the rock’n’roll domain?

My wonderful husband, Jon, was somewhat taken aback when I presented him with this plan the following morning.

‘I’m going to write a Christmas novella,’ I said.

‘But you’ve got another book launch in September, and you’ve planned your fourth book already—how’s this going to fit in?’ he responded enthusiastically, if pragmatic.

‘I’ll figure it out.’

And so I did. It took me just over a week to write the first draft in May 2013, and another few weeks here and there to tweak, fine-tune and polish it over the following months. But here it is. Spirits of Christmas. I hope you enjoy!

The Season of Cheer and Goodwill Starts Right Here!

As always, I am stunned, overwhelmed, honoured and humbled by the support I am receiving from the wonderful friends I have made during my authorly journey to date. I am proud to know each and every one of these bloggers, fellow authors, and reviewers, and their unwavering support and tireless enthusiasm mean the world. I know it’s a cliché, but it really does mean the world to me.

This is the place where I say THANK YOU to everyone who will be putting me and The Spirits of Christmas up on their blogs to help spread the joy, whether by review or promo post, or both. YOU ROCK, ladies and gentlemen!

Trying Not To Love You

It’s Music Monday!

NewMusicMondayLogo

Welcome back! The half term has ended in these parts, it’s Halloween week and also…it’s launch week for me (again!)!!!

There are so many themes I could explore with my song choice, but somehow, this number did it for me today. It fits with my upcoming surprise novella in the widest sense, in that ‘Trying Not To Love You’ is something that my hero, Jude, is kind of telling himself… but also, it’s a really cool video. Trust me on this one, it’s worthwhile watching. It’s a little piece of art, and the ending made me smile. I do love it when a band has a great sense of humour! Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy! 😉

Now then. How was it for you?

Before you go…

…don’t forget to pop back to this very blog on 1 November for the release news!!! And if you want an early heads-up, I’ll be revealing everything exclusively in my newsletter on 31 October. Not signed up yet? Never fear, do it here: SUBSCRIBE TO NICKY’S NEWSLETTER

Rock on!
